Surveying A New Potential Niche

I am basically new to IM and I have a question about the best way to survey a potential niche so I make sure I create a product that is in demand.

My only real idea so far is to find forums in this niche and create a survey using surveymonkey or something and hope people actually take it.

Does anyone else have a strategy that they have used with success in the past?

Thanks in advance for helping a guy getting started.

Surveys are great but you generally touch a limited population. You need to find out if people are buying it, and if they are searching it. So find out how popular it is on Amazon (if applicable) or somewhere else. Find the search volume of related keywords with google's kw tool. Find the commercial intent of the keywords with market samurai.

I know this is not a direct answer to your question but I think these things are at least as important as surveys.

Thanks guys I appreciate your feedback. I think I might have been confusing in what I am looking for help with. I already know what niche I would like to be in but I am trying to figure out problems in that niche where I can create a product to solve that problem for them. For example - I find out that puppy owners struggle with getting their puppy not to bite...I can then create a product to solve that problem.

I am trying to figure out a way where I can gain valuable and accurate feedback as to what this niche is looking for.

You're going to have to hit up forums in that niche and find out their problems and concerns there. I know that the marketer Howie Schwartz he uses survey monkeys to analyze a niche and their demands. He sets it up via ppc and then that leads to the survey.

You need to be fairly competent to set your survey up like that and have deep pockets. You could send traffic to the surveys from the forums by offering them some sort of related free e-book.

Yeah that is exactly what I was thinking either do it from the forums or do it with PPC. I was just wondering if I was missing some "secret" tactic that everyone knew about but me

Have you tried sampling for your survey? For a short time result you can ran a possible hypothesis and get a good grip about the target segment. Then you will get a limited survey area and will have more accurate outcome.

The best thing is to do first is to see if there is a need. The best niches are the ones that you can offer a solution for a problem then and there. That is why weight loss niches, ex back are great niches. Then you should find the keyword to work and that's the most important step. Low competition keywords with a relatively high number of searches that indicate the person searching might be a buyer. Hope this helps.

Nope I don't know of any other way

You could just try using articles and web 2.0 properties to drive traffic to survey. Forums and surveys are going to be the main way for you to get more info. You could also just build a list and try to get feedback that way.
