I had my first paying customer! YES!

Hi,

I've just started a small web design business and I've just finished up with my first couple of paying customers and it feels fantastic!

Anyone sitting in the fence my advice to them is to take that step and make your idea happen.

Are their any experienced members out there willing to give some advice on growing a new business? I'm about a month in now and looking to make this a more full time commitment.

Thanks!

    Congratulations Jack,

Hopefully more to come in the future.

Because you have taken action and done then necessary steps to attract customers to your business and you have made your first sale, you are now on a completely different league to a large proportion of marketers who are struggling to make their first dollar.

Because you have got your first paying customer, something has changed in your brain. You now know that this is real and it works. You should have no problem in scaling up and getting more customers. If you want to grow your business larger I recommend you:

    1. Look at what worked: How did you get your first customer?. What steps did you take to market your business to get you first customer and sale? Once you have found out what worked, you just need to scale it up. This will involve either more of your time, or money but your results will incease!

    2. Overdeliver:: As a new business one of the main things you should focus on is giving more and more value to your customers.
Ask yourself the following questions: What does my customer like about my service, What makes my business different from other similar businesses in my niche? You focus should always make your customer happy and ecstatic.
Why? Because your customers will tell their friends and family about your business bringing you even more customers!

    3. Keep working on yourself: It is very important to invest in you personal development and your education. Study your industry look at what is currently hot and what people are talking about. Study your competition, because you can learn a lot from your competition. And most importantly study yourself.

What has also helped me along my journey is writing long term and short term goals, listening to marketing audiobooks, and and just simply working on my personal development.

By working on and developing yourself, you will find better ways to grow your business and to provide more value to you customers

Congrats once again, and I wish you more success in for the coming future!

Be honest, that first sale was better than sex the first time wasn't it? At least it was for me. Glad to say since then I've gotten better at both, but that's another story.

      Congratulations!
David Kash gave you a mouthful, so I won't be redundant. I'd just like to add start building a list as soon as possible.

Plus, treat the customers you've established like gold (or more accurately an oil well). For example, do little things for them other web design businesses won't or can't do. It'll pay off when you least expect it - plus you'll instantly stand out from the crowd to them.

Hahaha I love tha anolgy, but as you said, I won't go any further into that haha!

Any suggestions for the best technique to get people to sign up for my list?

I'm signed up to aweber and found it easy to get subscribers when I was running a blog, but I'm a bit stuck for ideas when it comes to my business.

        Thanks!

I strongly suggest you build a good LinkedIn page. LinkedIn is the world's largest social network for businesses and professionals. Set up a good profile and it could do you a power of good.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have a LinkedIn account but have not done anything with it. I'll get onto building that up ASAP! I never really understood what it's all about but I'll learn.

If you're interested I can PM you a link to a brilliant WSO that had helped me enormously with LinkedIn. I won't post it here because whenever I post any such links (ALWAYS non-affiliate), my post gets deleted.

                I would greatly appreciate that

I have heard of many people receiving job offers and finding new business opportunities on LinkedIn, but that's as far as my knowledge goes!

                Really ?

I never have had that happened in the past

Thats disappointing to hear and do not understand why they would do that.

I hope they improve on that and not delete helpful links that are not affiliated

That's not the norm. Try to make sure it doesn't have a bunch of affiliate looking stuff after the ".com" if possible. Plus, it helps as an extra precaution to announce it's not an affiliate link" so a moderator with a quick trigger finger doesn't nuke it.

Create a killer squeeze page and offer a high quality, free gift, product or service that's relevant to your business. Caution: Don't be tempted to go cheap here (fair or not) they'll judge the quality of your service by your free gift. First Impressions.

Could someone please spell out to me what a squeeze page is. I'm sure I'd have no trouble making one, I'm just hazy on what it does!

A squeeze page is a one page website where you offer someone a free gift in exchange for their email address.
They are very easy to make, if you do not know how to make one you can find someone who will do it for you for less than 10 bucks!
Building an email list is a very smart thing to do!

    Congratulations Jack!

So, what are you going to do with that newly earned money? If you don't need it for anything, I would advise putting it straight back into your business and advertising. If you are based in a small town or somewhere rural, try some offline advertising. There's a lot of rural businesses who don't have, but need websites. If you live in a more populated area, maybe look into AdWords or a premium/feature advert on a listing website (if you are UK based, gumtree is really good for that kind of thing, but there are plenty of others).

The most important thing is to experiment a bit. See what way of gaining new clients works best for you. Once you have you preferred method, focus on it and try to make it as efficient as possible and increase your conversion rate, then grow from there.

    Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies. I used it to buy a laptop so I can do work on the go and not be limited to my bedroom, and it has proven to be a wise investment as I'm a lot more productive.

I'm based in Adelaide, South Australia. I have an add up on gumtree, but I've found social media, especially Facebook and Instagram have been the source of all my business so far, along with word of mouth.

I'm thinking about maybe doing some paid advertising on Facebook, just not sure yet what or who to target.

Well sounds like you already have more than half a clue, I have a feeling you will do fine.

Just remember to keep the ball rolling. Use each success to your advantage. Get some happy clients, ask them for some great testimonials, and use those testimonials to get more clients. Get some business cards printed up and offer a bunch of them to your clients for when anyone asks about their website. If you have the balls for it, maybe even ask if they would be willing to make a post about your great service on their businesses Facebook/twitter/whatever, although that's a little risky and might be pushing it!

The point is, keep the ball rolling!

    Jack,

Congrats on your first few sales online. Now you know how to get customers.

What you can do now from your current and future customers is to sell them more products on the back end. This will help you earn more money from each customer.

I remember my very first paying customer in the digital world. I made $5.00 dollars and did not know what to do after that. I had no idea of "Rinse and Repeat" at the time, so I forgot about the customer and had to start over from the beginning.
So let that be a lesson, take care of your customers. Send them thanks you notes, email them with valuable info or gifts, etc.
