Found a good keyword now what...

Hey all... I have a basic question that I hope some of you more experienced WF members and IM pro's would love to answer, Not only for me but also as a good discussion for all us noobs and to get the IM blood flowing again for those who have lost their way....

I did some keyword research and found one that looks good and Im going to start with. It receives about 9700 daily searches and has competition of about 73,000 other sites according to google( both exact and broad searches). Looks like a pretty good ratio to me.

Looks like a good starting point, question is...now what how to start the process of getting on the first page of google. What content should I use, backlinks too how should I go about that.

Now Im not looking for someone to hold my hand here but just thought this thread could serve as a starting point for all those starting out.

thanks

what are you trying to do? create a product for the market? promote an affiliate product? put up a review site? start a blog? we need more specifics on what you want to do with that keyword?

Logically, your next steps would go something like this...

    1. Ensure that there is a "hungry" market for the product or service
represented by the keyword/keyword phrase you uncovered.

    2. If there is a buying market, get a domain name that contains the
keyword/phrase. Try for .com if available, if not go for .net

    3. Get connected with one to three good products/services that you can
    sell (i.e.; via affiliate programs).

    4. Write or have content created based on the keyword and niche
    involved.

The is a simplification of the steps but should give you some direction.

Although the guidance given so far will help, it ignores the real problem behind your approach.

Right now you have one keyword. Although it looks like you'll be able to compete for first page placement with that keyword, you can't build around just one keyword.

Instead of registering the keyword as your domain, I would suggest at the very least building around that keyword with 10-25 related ones and registering a domain that suggests the theme rather than the individual keyword.

    Example...

    better golf swing
    get a better golf swing
    have a better golf swing
how to have a better golf swing
how to get a better golf swing

I'd register a domain like... bettergolfswingnow.com or yourbettergolfswing.com... something like that. This way it's generic enough I can build out with more keywords if the initial mini-site proves profitable, without having to register a new domain.

Then I'd create a site filled with articles targeting each keyword promoting products (drivers, ebooks, etc) related to improving your golf swing and market it.

I'd use Wordpress to build the site and drive traffic to it through organic means, focusing mainly on building backlinks - articles, web 2.0 sites, social bookmarking, blog commenting, press releases, rss feed submission, and backlink services like LinkVana, 3WayLinks, etc.

Depending on the success of the initial mini-site, I would expand upon it and build it into an authority site, or hold onto it with only the backlink services left to continue its promotion, or sell it for a lump sum profit.
