Using Wordpress To Build A Site

I've read a few threads on here where a lot of people recommend using Wordpress to build a site.

I always thought Wordpress was for building blogs or can it be used to build a normal site?
I'm basically looking to build a small site (more of a landing page really) without too much time spent. I will start to learn html as I go but for this project I need something a bit quicker.

Also, is it free as I have my domain name and hosting?

    Hello,
If you have cpanel in your hosting you can install wordpress by clicking the fantasico deluxe icon and choosing wordpress. It installs easily for you in a few clicks and its free.

I've stopped using traditional HTML editors to build websites. Most of my sites these days are based on WordPress. Some of the reasons:

      1. You can edit your site from any computer with an Internet connection
      2. You can extend the basic software to do practically anything, using plugins.
      3. There are thousands of themes available, most of which are free.

If you only want to do a salespage, you can use a theme like Cory Miller's free IMWB (Internet Marketing With Blogs). The theme includes three templates for sales pages.

Making a sales page the home page of the site is easy too - in the WP dashboard, go to Settings|Reading and choose "Front page displays a static page" and select the page you want to use.

There are some security issues with WordPress- here's a good explanation of what to do about them: SEM Labs Journal

If by landing page you mean squeeze page, I would recommend looking at flexibilitytheme.com that will make your WP blog look anything but a blog. It's not free though.

    Hey,

Yes. LOVE wordpress. I find that I don't use Dreamweaver as much as I used to and wordpress is free. quite amazing! As mikeyman said, install using the cpanel and with wordpress you don't have to know any code if you don't want to.

As for your hosting, it's good to have a company that does have the fantasico that mike was talking about.

I'm with GoDaddy at the moment, not sure if that has fantastico.

GoDaddy does not use Fantastico, rather they have their own control panel. But you can still install WordPress manually on your GoDaddy hosted site.

WordPress is indeed a great way to build a site, it's fast and Google loves it - I've never had a new WordPress site take any longer than 6 days to get into Google.

Wordpress is a great way to have a simple website up and running in no time. The wordpress site on your cpanel can be customised and will look nothing like a free wordpress blog.

It doesn't have fantastico but godaddy do have a panel that does install wordpress for you automatically. I forget what they call it.

    Tasha,

    You are in luck.

Wordpress is a fre application, and there are many themes to choose from, for you to get the right landing page.

ASs someone else has said, if you have cpanle with fantastico in your group of options, you can load and install Wordpress for free, with one click I(well, maybe three).

Seriosuly, it is easy, and you can then choose your desired themes.

    Wordpress is fairly self explanatory.

    Hope this helps.

I read an interesting ebook on how to use Wordpress to make mini websites off one domain using pages not posts. I will PM you with the name when I find it. I highly recommend Wordpress because of the plugins.

If u really want to cut short your learning curve, wordpress is the way to go.

If your host don't have fantastico, no problem...wordpress can be easily installed after u do FTP wordpress files to your server.

    Hi Tasha,

WordPress can be used to build a blog and static site.

For static site, all you need to do is to fix one of your pages as a permanent page. And you choose a theme that only displays one full page at a time, with the other posts in the sidebar, etc. And there, you have a static site.

Landing page is no problem for WordPress but if you are building a landing page, there is really no need for you to use WordPress.

WordPress is free and you can install on your own web hosting and using your domain. Yes.

Hi Tasha, in the settings Wordpress gives to the option to use a post or page for your homepage. By selecting a the page option, it is very easy to set up a landing page with Wordpress.

In the past 2 years I've switched all my sites (except for a few Drupal or vbulletin sites) over to Wordpress. It's not just the ease of use - the build in interlinking, instant SEO friendly nature of a wordpress site will get you ranked fast. A little tweaking and you're way ahead of even the best static sites.

      Thanks for the help everyone.

I've installed Wordpress to my GoDaddy account (as I've got about 2 months of hosting left) so though I'd practice with a domain I'm not using at the moment.

I've found lots of themes but everyone seems to look like a blog.

Are there any free squeeze page type themes available where I could maybe add a youtube video and an opt in box?

        ?
The themes will ALL look like blogs 'cause they're built for blogging software.

The better free themes and the good commercial themes (the already mentioned Affiliate Theme is the bomb!) are all easily customizable so that you can remove or modify many of the "blog-like" features to create the look you want. Also, with judicious use of Wordpress "pages" you can create the kind of static content that I think you're going for.

Besides the customizable look and feel, though, a Wordpress site has other very desirable characteristics.
        • active blogs are regularly indexed by search engines. So using the blog features of Wordpress can get your new content into the "pipeline" quicker
        • easy SEO - either built in or available thru plugins. Linking new blog content to your static affiliate pages is fundamental to a good linking strategy
        • easy site administration - add/remove/publish content from anywhere
So, yeah... IMHO Wordpress is THE tool for getting attractive, content-rich, SEO friendly sites up and running in no time at all.

    Betty, check my sig.

I really do use Affiliate Theme and absolutely love it. Used it for my site in sig....
As for video use THIS (not an affiliate link) plugin it is the one I used for the video for the site in my sig and I am really happy with it and it is soooo easy to use. You can also make the videos link to an offer as well (very handy).

Lots of plug ins for opt ins also.....

WP is amazingly adaptable you WILL learn to love it!

I don't mean to promote here but I honestly believe this post is the answer to her question. It is NOT free so don't bother if that is a must have for you. I would have paid many times what I did for the time and effort it has saved me. Their support is amazing as well I have been with them since their inception.

Do you think that site looks like a blog? (none of mine do btw) but still enjoy Google Love....

    Best of luck!

There is no limit to what Wordpress can do. I love it. It really doesn't have to be just for blogs. Granted, most of the themes out there are blog related. But there are enough free ones out there to make due. And some of theme are pretty good.

I have a few different sites using WP, and only one is a blog. Over at Buythebands.com you can see a wordpress theme in action. Along with dogtrainerorlando.com.

Most of the themes are free, however there are 'pro' ones for sale and designers who can make you custom made ones. Wordpress is really simple to use, it doesn't take long to catch on. And it's really easy to edit the files right from the user panel.

    Good luck!

Even though I can code sites, I use WordPress a lot since the admin is so easy. The only thing we marketers have to pay close attention to is the theme IMO (for SEO and appearance).
I'll change that, thanks for the input it's as easy as a mouse click.

Done... I also turned down the initial volume (I assume it was too loud?) Another mouse click whew I am tired

A few suggestions for you Betty:

    1) Drop GoDaddy. I still have a crap hosting account there but I use BlueHost, and others also recommend HostGator / HostMonster or whatever ... basically get something that has cpanel because it's way more "standard" and I think GoDaddy is not nearly as reliable. It's easy enough to do this if you are starting new sites anyway.

    2) USE WORDPRESS absolutely. I was using free themes and then learning to tweak them to my liking. IT takes too long. I now am using FlexSqueeze theme on a new site and I love it. It cost me $129 for a license to use it on all my sites. Very cheap in the long term. Be confident to spend some money. You get what you pay for.

I've used a number of website tools and since working with Wordpress, I won't use anything else. I love technology but I'm not an expert at it. Wordpress makes building a website easy. Also, there are awesome people on this forum, like Austin Delaney, who you can pay to help you with anything you don't know how to do. Or don't have time to do.

Ive used Dreamweaver, FrontPage, and a bunch of other HTML editors, but id have to say after using Wordpress its hard to go back. You can create squeeze pages, membership sites, static or dynamic sites, and so much more. With all the pluggins you can install you can basically put anything you want on your site.

Just like christian said, youtube has tons of free info that you can use to learn anything you need to know about wordpress, you just need to do some looking.

    Best of luck to you.
