If the internet didn't exist, what else would you do to generate a passive income?

I know this is not an internet marketing related question or topic, and it's not a "how to make $1000 in the next minute online" question either.

I was sitting and thinking to myself, "If the internet wasn't invented, how else would you generate passive income, and expose your products and services to potentially thousands to millions of people daily."

I'm living in a country where the electricity grid shuts down for hours during the day. Almost everyday of the week these days it seems, and it affects businesses, big and small alike.

What if your country's electricity grid somehow overloaded, like it seem our country's grid is, and all your power stations explode, and now you have to wait a couple of years to rebuild power stations before the grid can perform at it's peak again.

If the internet was to close down, or for some reason not be there for the next ten to fifteen years beyond your control, and generating income on the internet is your main source of monthly income and you lost it all. What will you do to replace that monthly income?

Is there such a thing as potential passive income outside of the Internet? haha jk

I would probably would have got involved in the food and service industry somehow, with the goal of running a handful of restaurant chains.

Does that even count as passive income when you're working your tail off?

This is cool. Nice thread, IT (like the imagination!).

    My twisted interpretation:

"When the zombie apocalypse inevitably occurs, how are you going to make money while fending off flesh-eaters?"

I'd get a shop to house my products, make some t-shirts, and - rather bravely - tackle zombies and wrestle them into the t-shirts. On the front? My ad copy! Back? Directions to the store.

Probably go back to what I was doing before the Internet; see, I can remember back that far!

I think if it was just the Internet that went down, I'd go back to running ads in one of the local newspapers for my writing and typing skills while helping my husband with his crafts.

No, it's not exactly passive income, unless I wrote a book that became a best seller.

I would do Network Marketing even then. Its not dependent on Internet. We can do it offline too. We need only a bunch of committed team members and then gradually the income becomes passive. Finding those members online or offline it doesn't matter.

Well, I got started in direct response marketing WITHOUT the internet. So if the internet were to cease to exist, I'd concentrate more on OFFLINE direct response (I still run offline campaigns anyway).

I'd run info mercials and do postcards for cheap/free reports and courses and then build a boiler room to UPSELL these buyers to larger courses, coaching and memberships.

The principals are much the same as IM, though obviously they're executed differently. I do a lot of IM these days but in some markets, I still use the "old school" offline stuff with great results.

Also, if the internet vanished, one would be well served by becoming fast friends with Dan Kennedy - the guy from whom I learned almost 20 (!) years ago.

If internet not exists yet, I would first invest in new technology, to create a passive income.

I would invent a system that could connect computers with each other, it not exist yet and I think it has GREAT potential.

I would start something like a digital marketplace, where people can buy and sell stuff. Or a start a social gather place, where you can meet friend. Or maybe something like a place where people can see each other’s video's without visiting each other for real. And what about creating a tool where stores can sell products without that people actually come to their store. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

And when this idea's become big, maybe I should invent something like a search system.

In some kind of way I think I can monetize all those idea’s even when they would sound stupid now, it might work!

It's amazing how many of these answers still rely on electricity.

How are you making phone calls without electricity? How are you creating that book and getting it produced?

How well do you really think the real estate/rental market would fare with electricity and communications at a standstill?

The best answer I read was the generators, by Kevin.

You would need to find a commodity people need and can afford. One you can source. Then get a sales team that sells and delivers for you.

It would not be 100% passive, but you could offload a bunch of the work.

I would start a service based business selling access to AC repair or some other once every few years type of repair work on a low end monthly payment. Around $20 to $30 per month.

I would then hire commission based independent contractors to cold call and go door to door for sales in the area. 25% for newbs, 30% for trainers and 35% for managers plus 5% team residuals.

All I would have to do is hire contractors, answer phone calls (or hire a receptionist to answer calls) and schedule contractors to go out to the house and bill me directly for the cost of repairs.

Kinda risky but very high potential.

There was a time where there was no internet and there were Millionaires and Billionaires then.

Stuff they need all the time... Stuff you can keep charging them for.

    Renting stuff
    Investments

I would rent a shop and start small. As for what I would sell, even without the internet, people have requirements, and there is always a niche to pick up offline. All I have to do is think of ways in which people can access them better.

People love reading, and I love books too, so probably a small library is what I would start. And employ a couple of college kids to pick up and drop off books for readers. It gets them pocket change and also gets my business moving. That can expand to multiple shops in different parts of the city. Once I have a few of those running, I'll have a customer base and I'll start off additional services from those shops (additional classes for kids and home makers, delivering groceries, etc.). Once I have things working, ideas will keep coming in to make things better and better.

So yes, I'll be making a living without the internet.

Don't forget people were generating passive incomes long before we had the Internet. Make investments or sell something. The Internet is a communications tool that gives you additional ways to market a product or service.

Back in the 1930's long before the Internet and Amway, some people were creating residual incomes by building houses and renting them out. Some people were creating residual incomes by selling life insurance.

Today some people create passive residual incomes renting things and selling things just like people did before the Internet.

I find it odd that people think of the Internet as a business. Internet marketing is not a business. Internet Marketing is a way of marketing any business.

If the Internet didn't exist today people would still be creating passive income streams.

Today a lot of people fail to create passive income because they are so caught up in looking for internet marketing secrets to creating passive incomes that require little work and they have nothing real to market.

Start with a real product, business or service. Then learn how to leverage the power of the internet to grow your business. But it all starts with having or creating something of real value to take to the marketplace... both online and offline marketplaces.

    Okay...

I'll chip in a serious reply. Although I will say - that's exactly what I'm doing when we're overrun by zombies.

    10 Passive / Semi-Passive Offline Businesses:

    1. Vending Machines (I like gumball machines, in case you wondered).
    2. Rental Properties (especially renting rooms to students).
    3. Stock market.
    4. Anything you care to rent (boats, tools, cars).
    5. Becoming an author (novels, books).
    6. Screenwriter (paid % of ongoing profits).
    7. Offline Ads (*)
    8. High-Yield Interest.
    9. Franchising.
    10. Laundromat.

About (*) : The trick here is to organize your operation so you have limited involvement. It works; I have experience. Your task is then to "oversee" operations and, if you like (and I do), be the creative force behind offline ad marketing: newspapers, circulars, radio, local cinema, etc.

    Cheers,

I would suggest that Internet Marketing is the digital version of direct mail marketing.

So I would get hold of a good targeted list ( much like a solo ad ) and send the list a sales offer. There are many companies out there selling these lists and thousands of names and addresses are available quite cheaply.

The knack is to write a good converting sales letter. The internet marketing themes of finding a hungry niche, a good converting product etc. still would apply.

Delivery of your product can be done by the many drop shipping companies that abound

Sorry if this is a much more serious reply than others in your thread

I remember one method - go to public places like mall owners, etc., and offer to place advertising billboards in the bathrooms. Build a network of billboards. Advertisers would pay monthly to have their ad in the billboards. Set up and forget, except you had to physically go to the bank to deposit the checks (hard work...), no PayPal. Too late now, the market is saturated.
