Opt In Before Download Page?

If a person buys a product, what do you guys think about putting in an opt in box before the download page.

So it could look something like this:

Sales Page => Paypal => Opt In => Download Page

If there's a better way, how do you guys do it?
#download #opt #page
  • I hate being forced to optin in order to access a product after I paid. I don't do this to my customers. I don't mind when vendors ask for an optional sign up (on the download page), in order to receive product updates, etc.

There are also products that will automatically add the buyer to your auto-responder list so that there is no need to ask them for the opt-in.

Yes, you are correct. I've looked into some solutions.

The problem with that is the request comes from my server. So my autoresponder will see that everyone on my list came from the same IP address.

If the request originates from the customer, it'll look natural and there's an audit trail of the customer's IP address.

I'm sure that's true with many, and that's a problem because aWeber (and probably most of the AR services) will stop accepting optins from that IP address.

However, I know of at least one where the automatic opt-in request is NOT sent by the server, but is automatically sent by the user's browser when they hit the download page. Because it sends an actual HTML form, from the browser, it works with ANY autoresponder service

Yes, it's better to let your buyers access to your download page once they made the payment.

And yes, there's better way to add your buyer to your list. I'm not sure which autoresponder you are using, you may look for if there's any Paypal integration for your autoresponder.

I know it can be done in aweber and getresponse, you may check out the page below if you are using either one of them:

As others have said, making them opt-in after they've paid is not usually a good idea. Especially since you've already got their information from making a payment and since they've bought something from you I'm pretty sure it's in already in your legal right to email them. That doesn't mean you can spam, but if you have informative/update emails that you want to send out related to your product then you can.

I would never put an Opt In page between purchase and download. A better way is to get the customers email via paypal and send them a personal Thank You email. And in the email you can then offer something additional as a bonus if they sign up to your list.

    Anyway, just my thoughts.

    That sends the wrong message.

Put the optin on the download page.

This tactic does NOT build trust

    Hi meepmeep,

It's worth looking a little bit deeper into the PayPal API (its open and free to use)... Also there are many free code snippets out there which will automate the process for you...

I'm using exactly the same process for my eCommerce business...

After my customer purchased a item for me through PayPal as payment option, Im gathering his eMail automatically to my own eMail responder (self - hosting). Which is quite good for backend-sales if you can imagine probably.

If you have any question feel free to ask it here or PM me for more information or help.

Best regards & have a great day!

I would make them optin before they pay. Surely they have to register their information with you before they complete a payment? If not, I would make sure you do this.

As mentioned several times, don't force people to optin before getting the product they paid for.
    That's just not right.
This should be done automatically through the payment process.

      Good morning all!

Meepmeep, I totally understand where you're going with this and you asked a good question.

"Opt-in" stands for OPTION to be added to a list. OPTION.

Ya kinda need to keep that thought right out front there when you want an opportunity to sell more stuff to your viewers.

Peeps, especially Americans, absolutely despise being forced to do anything, and they especially hate being cornered.

They are also not too keen on seeing email they didn't opt into. The fact that I bought something from you does not meant I ever want to hear from you again without a darn good reason.

If I have NO OPTION but to accept your newsletter or whatever in order to buy your product, I'm outta there. Don't corner me.

Try using something like DealGuardian where the user is automatically added to your email list. It takes away the extra step of them having to opt in, and it won't annoy them or get them pissed off at you.

If you automatically add them to a list make sure you treat the list like a true buyers list. Build that relationship. Do not add them to your prospects list and treat them like cattle.

You do not need another opt-in.

That is true. ClickBank and JVZoo lets you add customers to your Aweber/GetResponse accounts through their API. (Apparently DealGuardian does the same.) I can also grab it from PayPal when they send over IPN.

But what I'm trying to do is create is an audit trail so that if my email service ever suspects I've imported my list from questionable sources, I have the customer's IP address logged in their system.

Shrug, but maybe I'm overthinking things...
