Give away short report to build list and promote clickbank product, or sell as $7 product

I've written a short report on a skin care related problem, about 7 pages long.

My initial plan was to create a squeeze page and offer it for free to get people to opt-in to my list and then promote a high selling product in the niche. I already know which product I want to promote and I have a copy and know that it's solid information that is worth the money.

However, I'm starting to think that my report alone should at least be worth $7.00.

Has anyone else been caught in a similar situation? Not sure if I should just create a short sales page to sell my report as a $6.00 - $7.00 product using e-junkie, or just go with my initial plan: offer the report for free, build a list using Aweber and promote a high-selling ClickBank product which pays commission in the $20 range.

I'm leaning towards the mailing list option, but just wanted to hear your thoughts. Any input would be appreciated.

  • Why not put it up for sale and build a list at the same time. if it doesn't convert well try it for free. You can always up sell another product to those who paid for this report. If anything at least you'll get people on your list that you know will at least spend some sort of money on a product

Promote your squeeze page and build an email list. Also try with stumbleupon ads.

Create a similar report that pre-sell your product, I'm very much sure 7 page long report won't take you a day to complete I believe.

Then use the new report as a lead magnet then once the lead optins to your email list just redirect them to a paid offer.

If you think your product worth selling, then sell it and build a buyers list instead. It may require little more work, but you will learn a lot from the whole process. Things like recruiting affiliates...

Agree with Marked09 too, create a report to pre-sell your product, you can build a list of subscribers and buyers at the same time.

    Wish you all the best!

Why not do both. Do a test and see which way works best for you.

Give it away, build a list, send to your offer.

Sell it, build a list, send to your other offer.

Once you test you will know which way is best.

    Just my thoughts.

I totally agree with this work model .Try to sell it first and if you feel you are doing well ,you can add upsell to it.

If selling part does not go well you can choose give it away path

Build a list with it. $7 for 7 pages... it better be damn good if you go down the alternative route.

Use the short report as a freebie, then promote your main affiliate course so you can earn some real money. I imagine a sales letter about an ebook that is 7-pages long won't exactly be too long, too descriptive, or too persuasive.

But it's possible. I don't know how good your copywriting skills are. But at the end of the day to answer your question.... i would offer it as a freebie short report. Good luck man!

If the quality is good, and it is helpful, sell it for a few bucks and create a short video, checklist or actionplan as leadmagnet for example! If you sell it, you can also offer a discountto build a list.

I just learn that $7.00 is a very optimized price!
Anyway you should give a free content bonus, at least some hight quality mails!

What is the potential long-term value of a new person on your list?

Is this a niche where repeat sales are likely?

Is there an opportunity for recurring monthly sales in the market?

If the potential long-term value greatly exceeds $7, then give it away. You'll get more opt-ins if you keep it free, perhaps not as qualified of buyers, but more people to continue to deliver your message, too.

Think about the long-term value, not the immediate $7 gratification.

Wow, wasn't expecting a response like this. Really appreciate the variety of responses I've received.

I've added some more content to the report and it's now at 11 pages.

The responses in this thread have really helped me in coming to a decision and will serve as a reference point for the next time I am in a situation like this.

I have decided to just offer it for free to build a list. Some people brought up the issue of copywriting, which I think is a very valid point. I have little experience with copywriting and wouldn't be too confident in my ability to create good enough copy to sell the report. I also don't exactly have the money to hire a copywriter to whip up some copy for a $7 product. However, I am confident that I can whip up a good squeeze page for my free report giveaway.

Business is always done with long term perspective. If you give your 7 page report free and it provides value then you will be building your reputation, the trust which will help you make the sales in future easily. I'd suggest give it away for free and build relation with your subscribers first before selling them anything.
