First Offline Client Meeting - Help!

Hey Warriors,

So yesterday i got a phone call from my friend saying that their parents land-lord wants a website for their new patent pending product in the hunting niche.

Their site is to sell the product itself from the site and they already have a domain name but need hosting and the site designed. From what he said in our short telephone call the site is very simple and just needs alot of pictures (so a gallery section and pictures spread throughout) and have paypal intergrated (he suggested paypal) so people can buy the product and order it.

Now i said i would meet him tommorow at his house and run through everything for him and he said he needs the site done for this weekend. Short time scale but easily achievable even if the site isnt 100% perfect and needs some fine tuning over the weekend.

Now hes kinda rich so he should pay well and said a few times he would pay and it isnt just as a favour.

But anyhow....

Im thinking a wordpress site so its easy for me to put up and then get a template up too and then add the content and plugins etc etc.... All very easy.

Then either make myself or get created a banner and logo for his site (maybe combined depending on what he wants) and then the rest is all just written content and information on the product which he can either write or after out meeting i will gather enough information to write myself as a sales page kinda style but more informative too.

Then the meeting....

Seeing as he already definatly wants me to do the site for him im thinking of a £100 to £500 price tag just for the site and all images and then included in that price is some keyphrase research for his business, search engine optimization which is basicly all done by wordpress anyhow and then finally search engine submission which is dead simple but seems like its more value for money and is still important.

Then i want to talk to him about marketing for his site and brand name/product name and talk to him about both fixed prices per job or monthly marketing and email him a document with all the information and prices after i find out his budget/aims and of course plan of action.

So ive created a document that i will fill in as a notepad kinda thing on my laptop with all his details and basicly take notes on it while im talking to him. With a to do list which will hopefully be very full by the end of it all!

Then also a list of my pricing's and stuff as a guide and also my hostgator affiliate link so if anything i get the $50 commission from him for the hosting i helped setup.

I talked to my dad who is a indipendant financial advisor and meets people to close deals all the time and he gave me some advice which was basicly to listen to them before i pitch everything and they turn off. Plus ask them what their budget is and say 'i can accomodate your budget' if its low or 'that budget seems reasonable' if its higher , but also will give me an idea of what i can provide him with for his budgeting. Plus if its monthly then thats even better too especially if i become his marketing manager guy.

Anyhow.... any advice people??

Im especially a bit worried about the payment processing and him selling his product. I want to make it as easy for him as possible and really want him to be able to see the address and name of the person and their payment details as quickly as possible but im not that skilled in php or anything to create a fully fledged system to do all that. As it stands he would have to login to paypal and view each transaction.

Thanks

Oh and if his patent if worldwide or even just for the UK then i will talk to him about setting up an affiliate program so other people can sell his product and also offering a bulk non retail price on his site and take orders from the site for mass quantity's of the product or just to phone him or whatever. This would really expand the business 10 fold and cause a massive explosion.

Your dad is right, let this guy first tell you what he needs and if he says he only needs a website with integrated payment processing system tell him about the possibility and qoute him your price then gradually explain him that having a website won't help much unless you do some SEO and marketing and prepare yourself to discuss the marketing and SEO plan before you go for meeting, make your ideas sound like they are well organized and not random. If you have enough knowledge its very easy to amaze conventional business people by telling them what kinda exposure they can get by marketing their products or services online. I hope you'll amaze him ...

one more thing you can do is go to this site there are some good SEO and SEM companies listed here, have them call you if they have that option and explain a similar scenario to them and see what do they suggest. You can do the same with a web development company also. I hope you'll get some good ideas from there.

      Tom,

I agree with your Dad too, the only thing I would do, is maybe set up a blogger blog that would be a 'snapshot' of what his site might look like. Use a Screen Capture, and print it out like a flyer to take with you to the meeting. From there, you can discuss what he likes and wants... plus you can use it to put a pen in his hand to have him draw lines and notes to what he does and doesn't like. This will put 'ownership' in his mind.

      Warmest Regards
      Marcus

Ive made a load of one coloumn and two coloum wordpress templates into a file and will show them to him and then take with me a blank piece of a4 paper and ask him to do a rough plan on what he wants.

That way he can take what he likes from all these designs and make it into his perfect plan unless he likes a template so much that he just picks one out right which is even easier for me.

          # 1: Ask questions and LISTEN.

Forget about all the preconceptions you have now about what he needs and what you think he needs.

Just spend your time getting to know this guy, his product, why he created his product and why other people will love it.

Find out if he's sold his product to anyone and why they bought it.

          # 2: Make suggestions of strategies based around the information you gather.

He may not like all your suggestions. Don't get too attached to any one idea. Just run with the idea that gets him excited.

Also don't start thinking all you can do is a website.

What about email follow up and marketing with online video. Both should work well with this kind of product.

          # 3: Quote high and let him negotiate you down (if he negotiates you down at all).

100-500 pounds is starting way too low.

If you're actually thinking through strategies to help him make real sales...SEO, online video, email follow up etc etc...then he's going to see the value in paying you to implement effective strategies.

I would think a minimum starting point might be US$1,500 to $2,500.

But remember it's not about putting up a website for him...it's about the real sales and profits you can create for him.

You need to go through the strategy you work out with him step by step and get HIM to estimate the sales he's likely to make.

That way you can estimate an approximate dollar value of his service and compare it to your fee.

          Kindest regards,
          Andrew Cavanagh

            Thanks for that Andrew,

I really didn't know if my pricing was too low especially seeing as its an ecommericial site rather than just a normal personal site or information site about a business.

Now i definatly love this strategy!

Learn from those sometimes multibillion companies and just play the middle man for the conversation point of view.

      Great idea

Had my meeting with them and they need a full site with minimal graphics and information and that's all.

I charged $120 for the first page and $80 for each page after that.

    5 pages so around $500

Easy work and should only take me a few hours and is based on a free wordpress template.

Also told him i could do marketing services too and so he said once his product is released that he will think that over too.

All went well and money is in my pocket right now

    Thanks everyone...

You're on the right track. The best thing to do is have a bunch of stuff to sell him on. You pretty much already have the site design in the bag. Treat him like the grocery store does you. While you're waiting line, they have a bunch or candy, drinks, etc. right in arms reach. Now how many times do you go ahead and pick up a candy bar? Now, do the same with the upsells like suggesting an affiliate program being set up, etc. This will increase your bottom line.

Instead of making $1,000 on the website, you can walk out with $3,500
