Voluum Dissolves Newbie Plan and Makes It All Paid!

I guess, Voluum - an online tracking platform - has gained enough momentum to throw out its free newbie plan where affiliates could get free tracking for zeropark traffic and (limited) free tracking for all other traffic.

After logging in this afternoon (2015-07-01), I was greeted with a simple "the noobie plan will be discountinued on August 1, 2015. If you'd like to continue using Voluum, upgrade to a paid plan". Paid plans start at $99 monthly and are still limited as far as tracking is concerned.

As far as I am concerned, this is so bad form: first they provide you free tracking and lure you with totally free service for zeropark traffic users, then after spending a substantial amount of time and effort understanding the platform intricately (there is a bit of a learning curve!) and creating redirection schemes and flows and orchestrating all the traffic into many different campaigns, they pull the trigger and let you standing high and dry!

I clearly understand the economics of providing part of your service for free and I also get the need to survive financially as a company, but simply killilng the very service you used to gain access to customers, is bad form. How would you feel if skype suddenly said, well nice to have all these users, but if you want to use skype in 4 weeks from now, you will need to pay for it.

There is a difference between having customers upgrade to a paid service (which was the case until now) and simply stopping the free part all together.

I guess that is a good opportunity to re-evaluate the tracking market once again. There ARE other players in the market. I suggest you do this too, if you have been relying on the voluum free service so far.

The plan to offer a free service and profit from upgrades looks good on paper - but if customers are staying with the free plan rather than upgrading ...there is not enough profit.

I've seen many companies with free options as a startup change to a free trial (limited time) or eliminate the free option altogether. Oddly, rather than be grateful they had the service for free for a while...people are usually angry at having to pay for it. Human nature.

At least they have given a fair warning - some companies don't do that. If your own business relies on a free service, always wise to have a backup plan in mind.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

You see, it is a bit like entering a contract: the customer spends time on learning the platform and gets a limited service for free. Without that incentive the customer would be much less likely to pick that service. It would be one service of many.
But if after having invested your part into the service (time and effort), the service (your compensation) gets pulled, you feel left with the short end.

At least they gave the free option for a while. I guess they figured out what their value in the market is worth now that they've been in operation for a while. Time will tell if the public will pay that much a month for a tracking solution like Voluum. Will people actually want all the bells and whistles that it provides in exchange for a price tag that high?

    I understand your frustration.

But don't you invest time and effort learning any platform or service you intend to use whether it's paid or free?

The bigger question: is the new paid service worth the price.

You are not "investing" anything into that service as a free customer. The benefits of learning to use the service effectively are benefits to YOUR business or sites. Of course it's frustrating when there's a change to a paid service - but no one owes a free service forever to users. Any company that is growing must change and adapt and monetize it's products and service.

It's just a bump in the road of business - and you decide whether to upgrade or to move to a different free service or a cheaper one.

Hahaha, you "invested your time" using the best tracker on the market for free ! This is a new one.

The fact that Voluum was free for so long, and with it being the absolute best tracker affiliate marketing has seen in the last decade is unheard of, so kuddos to them for that.

Now there are plenty of free trackers, you can use those, you don't want to because they're not as good, so as we say in France, tu veux le beurre, l'argent du beurre et le cul de la fermière

Lol, and kudos to you for sticking up to them so rigorously. Almost sounds like the Stockholm syndrom -first lured with a cookie and then held hostage...

But hey, we all use time differently. Does the free portion of voluum's service cover the requirements of an online marketing business? Of course not. But does it tip my decision to work with them over an equally good and more established service (like Thrive) when I can get to know them for free? Of course it does.

I invest time because it is valuable to me. But given the choice I rather invest it into a service that sticks to the plan and is upfront.

It seems many people always forget one thing.

If it's free, you are the product.
