From $2 to $1,500 per Month, My First Year as an Amazon Affiliate

One year ago I entered the world of making money online (MMO) by launching an Amazon affiliate site. Here are some things I learned along the way.

Authority Sites Are King : If you plan on getting most of your traffic from search engines then I highly recommend making an authority site. New items added to your existing site get ranked more quickly than new items added to a new niche site. The new items also improve the overall ranking for the site so they help all of the existing items. Another benefit is brand recognition. Quite a bit of my traffic comes from people Googling the name of my site.

Pick a Niche You Enjoy Spending Money In : I'm happy to keep working on my site because it's a little like getting paid to shop. I enjoy researching products that I might want to own. It would probably feel like work to research something I don't care about.

Get Involved in Your Niche : I built up traffic to my site by posting on forums for my niche. I did NOT post links just to promote my site. I got active in the forums by answering questions when I knew the answer or by helping people solve a problem when I knew the solution. Eventually I built my site so that I could post a link that answered the question or solved the problem. My focus on providing value to the community led to people becoming my advocates and promoting my site for me without being asked. These quality forum links are responsible for improving my rankings on search engines. By my fourth month a majority of my traffic was coming from search engines and that's now up to about two-thirds.

Be Patient : My site only earned $2 in its first month and Amazon doesn't pay you until you earn at least $10. When I earned $60 in the second month I didn't get paid right away since Amazon waits two more months before providing payment. Since I spent one month building the site before even launching it that means I worked for five months before receiving my first dollar. I'm glad I didn't give up. Now that I receive substantial payments each month I'm careful to set aside what I think I will need for taxes in a separate account.

Put in the Work : I probably average 2-3 hours per day working on my site. This means I was earning less than minimum wage for my time for the first 7-9 months. But I kept adding products to my site and kept making site improvements and now it is really paying off. I took off the first two weeks of June due to other priorities and still earned over $800. When I spend time on my site I'm not doing it to earn money for the time spent, I'm doing it to give myself a raise by growing my business.

Promote Cheap Accessories : My first two orders were not for products on my site. Instead they were for accessories to those products. It didn't take me long to build on that idea and start adding recommended accessory links. Once someone decides to buy a product they are much more likely to buy a much cheaper accessory for that product. Watch your Amazon orders report for ideas. The lower priced items lead to more orders and more orders lead to higher commission percentages. I went from 4% (month 1) to 6% (month 2) to 6.5% (month 3) to 7% (month 6) and last month to 7.5%. If someone makes a purchase on Amazon with ten items in their cart then that counts as ten orders. Anything they buy within 24 hours of clicking on your link counts as long as they don't click on someone else's link after yours.

Add Expensive Items : Initially my site focused on an affordable type of product in my niche ($50 - $150) but eventually I started adding more expensive products. This turned out to be a great idea. The higher priced items brought in more money per order and took advantage of the higher commission rates from all the orders on the cheaper products. They also attracted customers who were more likely to spend and who were more likely to buy expensive items in general. That helped my site earnings reach four figures per month starting in April. Last month I earned a $175 commission on a $2,300 product that was not even listed on my site (it is now) helping me on my way to nearly $1,500 for the month.

Link the Image and the Price : About 75% of my earnings come from people clicking on the product image (which links to Amazon) or clicking on the product price which is in a paragraph describing the product. Everything else I've tried such as the buy now button and links to accessories only make up a small percentage of the earnings. Be aware that if you have Amazon's price on your site there are a number of rules you must follow which are listed in their affiliate terms and conditions.

Go With Your Strengths : I'm more of a software developer than a writer so I don't actually have any product reviews on my site. You read that right, I have an affiliate site with no product reviews. Instead I built a searchable product catalog that offers many more search options than any other related site. It also has more accurate product specifications than Amazon. As a programmer I was able to use Amazon's product advertising API to automatically update the prices and keep in line with the terms and conditions for showing prices.

Leverage Popularity and Product Comparisons : I have automatically generated pages on my site to show the most popular products. I use my site usage statistics and Amazon's sales rankings in conjunction to calculate the popularity. These pages get a lot of traffic and generate a lot of clicks to Amazon. Popularity may be more influential than a positive review in helping someone decide what to buy. I also automatically show similar products and allow visitors to compare any two products side-by-side. With several thousand products this makes my site nearly infinite in size.

Keep the Search Engines Happy : I submitted my site to Google and Bing and regularly use both of their webmaster tools. These tools provide valuable recommendations for search engine optimization (SEO) to make the site easier for their bots to read and easier to use on mobile devices. I also submitted a sitemap and automatically keep it up-to-date.

You Don't Have to Do Everything : I'm not building an email list (new products in my sub-niche generally aren't available on Amazon so I don't know what I'd promote). I don't get much traffic from social media (I've tried, but half-heartedly). I don't buy traffic (I earn 5-6 cents per user and buying traffic costs a lot more than that so it would have to be REALLY good traffic). Maybe I could earn more if I did those things but I'm very happy with my current progress. Besides, maybe there are some types of site where those things are not appropriate.

I hope anyone still looking for their first online success will find my story encouraging. Best of luck!

Great point regarding promoting cheap accessories.

Too many Amazon marketers focus on the big stuff and overlook the fact that the small stuff actually adds up to a nice revenue stream.

Thanks. I think of them as earnings multipliers. While they don't earn too much on their own they also make the bigger items earn more. When you consider those two things together then they become more significant.

In June I made just 13% of my earnings from the accessory links but without those extra orders I would have been in a lower earnings tier so in total they were actually responsible for 20% of the earnings ($300). Any simple idea that can earn you an extra 20% should not be ignored.

Plus, even if your visitors do click through to buy the smaller items, they can still be UPSOLD by Amazon. Amazon's upsell strategies are AMAZING!

          Your earnings are impressive.
But yes, the things that worked for you may not always work for others, still it's always good to share one's experiences, so that others can benefit from it.

Also check out this sit 'thisiswhyimbroke.com' ( If you haven't already)
I came across this from a WSO and this site just caught my attention.
I mean it's just awesome, the products jump out to you and you feel like keep on spending.
Another thing I liked is the direct approach and catching viewers attention by the products itself and not by other content and articles.

Thanks for sharing your experience and tips

Congrats. Interesting! I tried Amazon with an autoblogs and made a little more than $1000 total. Now the sites are dead and am onto another. Thanks for the encouragement but would like to know traffic stats if you don't mind.

The traffic has been increasing fairly steadily. In June the average was 800 visitors per day according to Google Analytics. That figure has been going up by about 70 per month. Amazon reported 240 referred visitors per day (30% of the 800). That percentage has been dropping slowly from a high of almost 40% in January when I had about half the traffic. The conversion rate reported by Amazon was about 4% (orders / clicks).

But. Why don't you implement social traffic. I never tried but it should amoynt to something.

You said you never wrote article but then you post product description from Amazon as is? How abou images and image optimization?

I post on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter each time I add to my site but these posts generate less than 1% of my traffic. I just don't put much effort into that side of the business.

My approach for the product descriptions was to create a template that is a few paragraphs long. My code basically fills in the blanks for each product to generate the description based on the specifications. Some parts of the template may be added or removed depending on the features available in each case. This includes recommendations for accessories. When a new product has something that isn't covered by the template I have to update it a bit but I don't write a new description each time or copy Amazon's description.

I usually crop the Amazon images to fit the format of my site and optimize them to make the file size as small as possible without them looking terrible. I create thumbnail versions for my search results page since the site is a searchable catalog. I also implemented lazy loading for many of the images such as those after the first ten search results so the pages load faster. The remaining images are loaded asynchronously via javascript.

This is very, very, very interesting to say the least. One of my blogs is in the wedding and party planning niche; another is in the deer hunting/butcher supplies niche.

I would LOVE to do what you did for each of these sites, but I'm not a programmer.

I've had an Amazon astore set up on each of them for a couple of years now, but very seldom make any sales.

Hopefully someday the reverse will be true.

That said, you identified a problem that likely isn't unique to you. Just pointing out that there may be a viable software product he could roll out based on his success, if that interests him. Worth looking into if it does. Best of luck to both of you.

I like the way you think. I wonder how many opportunities pass by unrecognized. I've been trying to come up with product ideas in my niche without much success but maybe the product could be the system I've built (or part of it).

At the moment what I've created is a long, long way from something that could be used by someone else or for another niche but I could start moving it slowly in that direction. How exciting!

This is very important if you are going to put prices on your site. If you do not know how to set it up like the OP did then please do not list prices as they can change hourly. Amazon does not like it if your site has incorrect prices.

If you do not know how to use the API then use phrases like "At the time of this writing item is listed for less than $xx.xx

This is one of the few posts on Amazon that I've ever seen in the WF that I thought were really good. My guess is that if the OP is making $1500/month today next year it'll be $10,000/month or more.

While I certainly don't agree with all the advice in the OP, most of that is due to the fact that what works for one person might not be the best for another -- not because the advice is necessarily bad. For instance, email marketing and especially social media are huge drivers of traffic for us, but certainly won't work in all cases. Similarly search engines provide some value, but aren't at all what we focus on and we never do forum marketing. (Though I certainly agree that it's great when others do forum marketing for you!) Still, this isn't to say that people shouldn't use those methods. Use what works for you!

One thing I really liked was his emphasis on offering a diversity of products, both in type and price is key, key to generating sales, but even moreso, key to generating repeat sales. I think it's telling that much of his search engine traffic comes from people searching for his site's name. That's also the case with us and it tells me that he's really providing value to his users.

Anyway, great job and great advice!

Interesting. With 800 visitors a day you made just over twice as much as I made in a month with just 4 visitors a day, so your 24,000 visitors a month compared to my 120 visits a month. The way I look at it is a lot of your traffic is wasted (due to it being non buyer traffic or they left due to distractions). Over 23,000 visitors you get each month are leaving without buying.

I like to focus all my efforts on only attracting only productive (converting) traffic. For me quality is so much more important than quantity.

What you need to do now is add retargeting code and bring those thousands of people back!! Then you will see a big increase in earnings.

Some fantastic tips shellerik. Thanks for sharing. And congratz on your success. Though it might not be mad money, it's more than most people make online. So your doing great.

I personally never put up prices. Mainly because, as mentioned they change quite often and my main goal has always been to get people to Amazon in the first place. Same I've done in with my other past affiliate marketing.

Don't know if many people realize or think about that fact that Amazon does a pretty good job of selling and recommending up the butt, so just getting them to Amazon and let them take over. Path of least resistance.

    Well, just my take.

It's funny, I've seen the advice to build a list to promote offers a million times in this forum but never could think of what to offer. Now it dawns on me that since I'm automatically tracking availability and prices I could have a form for people to sign up and find out when certain products become available or drop below a certain price. Is that the kind of thing you mean?

Similarly for PPC I only thought about trying to drive traffic to the entire site not just best selling products which would of course be more targeted traffic. I will look into that as well. Thanks for the input.

do you attribute your growth to forum posting and referral traffic?

what percent of your traffic comes from Google?

Currently about 70% of my traffic comes from Google with another 15% from referral and the last 15% direct. I'm fairly sure a significant percentage of the direct traffic is actually referral traffic that is miscategorized by Google Analytics. Something like 5-10% of my Google traffic is from people searching for variations on the name of my site so I suppose that could be considered direct traffic.

I assume the forum links are the reason Google trusts my site so I attribute my growth in part to the ever increasing number of forum links and in part to the fact that I keep adding more products. I try to average five new items per day.

According to Google Webmaster Tools there are just over 1,300 links to my site from about 100 different domains. Half of the links are on the two forums I actively participate in. Most of the other domains are sites I haven't even heard of but they seem to be forums.

I have not done any advertising or PPC. The suggestion from jan roos to use PPC for my top selling items is interesting so I may look into that. Previously I only considered PPC for the overall site which would probably not be profitable due to not being targeted enough.

I have just one site and it is for one niche.

The site is built from scratch rather than on a platform like Wordpress. It is a mix of html, php and javascript which I think is what Wordpress is made of too.

Can you view the source code in a text file? I know very little about HTML and less about the others, but would it be possible to make a downloadable product that one could learn how to insert the javascript into their WP sites to accomplish what you did? I'd buy it.

With your list you can sell them related offers on amazon, info products from clickbank, cpa offers and of course letting them know when you post new content on the site.

Start buikding your list now because you are leaving money on the table.

I use a popup plugin where i give away a valuable freebie.

Yes for ppc you target the buyer keywords for your best selling products. It should bump your income quickly.

    Cheers

My site is not a store. The "buy from Amazon" button is just a link to Amazon the same as the price links and the image links. Sadly it only accounts for 3-4% of my earnings. Almost 60% comes from the price links. I use a different tracking id for each type of link so I can compare how well they perform. I think I forgot to mention that in my post as a tip. You can create up to 100 different tracking ids.

Can you point to an Amazon-focused site which you think is killing it on associate commissions?
It don't have to be your site.
It would help to use as a model when building new sites.

That's an interesting idea. I've never sought out any other Amazon affiliate sites to use as a model for mine. I just googled things like "Amazon Affiliate Tips" and "Amazon Affiliate Earnings" to get ideas then I experimented on my own site to see what worked and what didn't.

Honestly in all the product searching I've done I don't really remember running into many affiliate sites. I may be a pioneer in my niche.

The two main things repeated: "people search for the name of my site" and "I may be a pioneer in my niche". All points to the stuff repeated on the forum oft by experienced marketers: do your own thing! Your niche may be as small as a toe nail, but the world is big enough for you to carve out a buck from any interest.

      LOL you are so right!

I really learned a lot from this thread and just want to thank the OP.

This goes to show you that with some hard work, patience, and persistence affiliate review sites can be extremely lucrative.

I'm thinking that the next step for the OP should be to rinse and repeat. Obviously it would be extremely difficult for the OP to successfully maintain more than 3 of these sites, but this process could easily be outsourced.

      Great job!

I can't really give you accurate percentages of how I spend my time. I check my visitor and earning stats every day if I'm able. I track key metrics in an Excel spreadsheet with lots of motivating charts and projections. Most days I search for new products and add them to my todo list. I also visit the forums in my niche but I don't post or comment every day, just occasionally when appropriate. If someone leaves feedback on my site I act on it.

Every three days or so I try to gather detailed specs and add a batch of new products to my site. I have a script that automatically checks my links and gets the latest prices and popularity twice per day. Occasionally I spend time adding features to my site. I don't do this often but when I do I may spend quite a few hours of work on it over several days or even weeks. I think my most recent "big" coding change was to make the site mobile friendly.

Overall I'd say I have lots of days with under one hour of work but I'm closer to 2-3 hours on days when I add products and I may work 8+ hours on days when I'm making major changes.

I have a test version of the site where I try out changes before moving them to the live version that everyone sees. My robots.txt file tells search engines to stay out of the test site and my .htaccess file prevents access to the test site while I'm not using it.

        Thanks for the reply shelleric.

I started my main site in January. It is a winter site and found that I made a little money those first few months eventhough my site was underdeveloped.

I've added much more content since then and without too much effort I am on the first pages of Google for a few keywords so I am excited to see what Q4 will bring.

Thanks to your post I have also started commenting on forums. For me personally social media such as twitter and facebook just brings junk traffic with no real conversions. It's not the place to put in big effort for me.

I have a blog on my site as well and this is where I spend a lot of my time.100+ posts at a minimum of 300 but often many more words should set me up nicely for this winter but its 2016 that I am really excited about as I plan to dominate my niche then.

This might sound rude but I wouldn't show off my site(s) if it was doing well. People put a ton of work into them, testing, tweaking, trial and error, don't want to post it so others can copy and take the easy way out. Which could kill your own site with too much competition.

Like shellerik said, just takes trying, see what works, what doesn't and adjusting as you go.

At the moment I am only part of the US Amazon affiliate program and not any of the others like UK, DE, JP, etc. About 6% of my traffic comes from the UK (vs 36% from the US) and I estimate I could see a 10-20% boost in earnings if I setup UK links so this is certainly on my todo list for the future.

Since I created my site from scratch rather than using Wordpress I cannot just use a plugin, I will have to decide how to implement it, write some new code and find UK links for all of the products. It qualifies as a "major" update so I'll need to wait until I have some significant free time.

    Hi Shellerik,

You post has been most helpful in providing insider information on amazon affiliates. I mainly meddle with clickbank products for my marketing means and the concepts we use are quite different from what you employed.

Its interesting to know that you have made a successful business without using social media traffic and squeeze pages which are the one of the core methods used by me. Will definitely consider trying out amazon one day after reading those pointers from you.

    Thanks for sharing!

Yes I use a cron job to update the prices. It runs a couple times a day. My understanding of Amazon's rules is that you should not show a price that is more than 24 hours old.

I could have made my site using Wordpress but there are a few reasons I chose not to. First, I knew my site would require a lot of coding and it is often more difficult to understand and change someone else's code than to write your own. Second, I didn't want to depend on other people's components that might break in the future. Third, sometimes I just enjoy making things from scratch.

Looking back I can see I missed out on at least one benefit of doing it in Wordpress which is that I might have been able to turn my work into something that I could sell like plugins and themes.

Good read! And nice story too, congrats!

Ah well, I guess what kills most dreams is the Be patient point. I ditched everything I was doing for a new BIG project and it's hard to be working for months earning nothing. Luckily I had savings from previous projects so I can keep going, but it's frustrating, specially when you are not even 10% sure your next project will work as expected. But then if you give up your chances will be 0% and you'd have been working for nothing.

Now I have at least another month of hard work before I can launch the site and then a few others before the site gets traction (hopefully) and then at least two more before I can start getting payments... so I would be lucky if earn something before year's end. But giving up is not an option.

A lot of people just get frustrated if they don't start earning money the first or second month, they ditch the project and start other, then they ditch that other too... I see this everyday. Unless you have resources to spare, you should be patient and stick to a plan.

        Congratulations Shellerik,

Great content and advice for beginners.

I agree you should have an opt in box or simple landing page for a newsletter about your niche products so people can join your list. This will become very valuable to you over time if you want to get repeat business with past customers looking for more of your good advice.

This is a very inspiring story, it flies in the face of convention and all the naysayers stating that Amazon affiliate marketing is "dead".

I know you probably don't want to reveal your niche (therefore I can only guess at whether this is viable or not), but have you thought about maybe either selling some of your own items or private labeling them on Amazon FBA to sell on your authority site for increased profit?

Good job brother! Keep on building traffic and focus on that niche!

A lot of things will distract you along the way... don't lose focus.

Keep building traffic, build content and love what you are doing

Also, have an exit plan once you get to reach a certain point

    Good job again and congrats!

    Shellerik:

Thank you for your very informative post. I know your website and you've done a great job in creating it and making it work. Most Amazon affiliate sites are "thin" affiliate sites and don't offer anything beyond the posting of products, but yours offers much more, which is why Google likes you. Congratulations on your success.

BTW, if you could package your template and code, your product would be better than most of the other Amazon site builder type products and plugins out there.

shellerik, I have to admit that when I saw the thread title, I was already mentally composing a lambasting for what I was sure was yet another product presell attempt.

If my typing seems muddled, it's because I'm eating my words. Excellent post. If this is the calibre of content you are posting on your forums, I can understand why you are garnering links.

Which leads to the only real weak spot I see. And that's the heavy reliance on search traffic. All it takes is one algo tweak, and 70% of your traffic is gone.

Jan Roos stole my thunder regarding building a list and experimenting with paid ads to your best items.

        So here's my contribution.

You wondered what you would send to a list. How about sharing some of the questions/problems you encounter on the various forums, along with your responses? If the response would benefit from one of your links, include it.

You could also include "news" about special promotions or markdowns in your niche. Since you aren't building a "cult of personality" site, you could even include curated links to blog posts or other content you find, and valuable affiliate offers associated with them, even if they are outside the Amazon family.

        Otherwise, well done!

Congratulations! that is awesome. I did something stupid and had my account permanently shut down. I had a link at the job I was at then to check my stats and was clicking on it then ordering business supplies (through my own link). Not for personal stuff but at a job.

Next thing I knew, I received a notice of permanent suspension! I hadn't made enough to make it worth that happening and didn't realize that a completely unrelated company would get me banned. So that was the end of my less than illustrious Amazon affiliate career. LOL

Fortunately I had other irons in the fire, so to speak. I haven't really looked in to getting back, maybe one day.

Don't worry about the danger of people copying your site if it's doing good. The fact is, people just don't copy the effort you've put in because... 1. People may not agree with you because they think they know better and can do better. 2. People already knew about the likes of your site, just like how they knew about eBay, amazon, and other profitable sites. 3. It's so easy to know if a site is doing well so it's nowhere to hide. 4. However, nothing to worry about as these people DO NOTHING in the end... that's why ideas are pawns and implementation is the queen. :-)

That is a very well laid out plan. Appreciate it very much. Of late I have been having a hard time making money from Amazon. I like your tip on forum marketing. Hard work but more profitable IMO. BTW did you build your site by copying and pasting your forum responses on to your website or did you rewrite the content to make it unique? Do you post product reviews on your website?

I don't build my site by copying my forum responses onto my site but I do get ideas for what to include on my site from seeing questions that are asked repeatedly on forums. If I can come up with a clear and definitive answer and find a logical place to include it then I will. I occasionally copy content from my site to use in forum responses since sometimes that makes more sense than posting a link. Having a link in every forum response is a sure way to be seen as a spammer rather than someone looking to contribute to the community. The focus should always be on how to provide value for others, not how to gain value for yourself.

My site does not have any product reviews. I've only purchased one of the products on my site so it doesn't make much sense for me to be writing reviews. My site has product descriptions, detailed specifications, side-by-side comparisons, similar product lists, recommended accessories, most popular lists, tons of search criteria and even a buyer's guide. It took a long time to add all of those features and I still have more to add.

  • Authority Sites Are King: Yup! Making an authority site is definitely the way to go. I used to have a bunch of small Amazon niche sites. They used to make a little money but not anymore. I was too lazy to build an authority site but just recently decided to create one about a subject I actually like so it does not feel like work. I don't care about making any money from it right now but I read stuff about it (something I'd do anyway) and then transfer that knowledge to my blog site. It will become an authority site eventually and then I will start to monetize it with Amazon, Adsense, etc...But unless its an authority site, it wouldn't make any sense to try to make money with it as I know from past experience that it wouldn't.

How's the site holding up now? Last December was my first $2,000 month and since then I'm not seeing much growth. I've been holding steady around 1,200-1,300 visitors per day and $1,500-$2,000 per month.

I don't really write any blog posts. There is a section where I write about recent updates to the site. I usually write a couple of those per month and share them on social media. Since my site is a searchable product catalog my key metric is how many items I add and my average is about five new items per day.

I wrote a comment in another post about how my site adds more value than Amazon I think I'll share that list here.
    • More specifications about each item than Amazon
    • More accurate specifications (users can provide feedback/corrections)
    • More search criteria (about 40 so far)
    • More sorting options (currently five)
    • Most popular model lists (calculated using model views and Amazon's sales ranking)
    • Side-by-side model comparisons (all specifications for any two models)
    • Lists of similar models (for any model being viewed)
    • Recommended accessories (as appropriate for each model)
    • Links to owner's manuals
    • Seven region/currency options (international Amazons)
    • Email alerts when models become available for purchase

Great post! Especially the part you mentioned about being patient. There no overnight secrets in MMO. Patience and consistency is a must to go on.

Any progress deserves celebration also! Even if it was from 2$ to 3$, you're gaining and growing.

It's nice to see this old post of mine come up again. To provide some additional encouragement I can share that this past December my site earned over $2,800, with about $400 of that from international Amazons. Joining a few of the non-US affiliate programs and adding product links for them when applicable has been a nice way to boost my earnings by 15-20%.

Here is the US report for December:

I just have joined this forum and this thread is the first one I have read. I was just wondering how you are doing now, almost 2 years later, and there it is, an update from you! It is great to see how much your site has grown over time.

I am planning to join the affiliate marketing world for weeks now, this thread gave me some great ideas.

Are you only using Amazon or do you also use some others? I'm planning to do more, because Amazon is not that big here in the Netherlands. (only Amazon DE and UK, but we have some other local sites who are about the same).

In this two years, did you still haven't build a email list? Or is your traffic still coming from google searches and your forum posts / social media?

Either way, awesome job you did there! Keep up the amazing work! I will keep an eye on this thread, I would love to follow your story.
