Creative Marketing, Press and Collaborations.

I'm a little new to the online marketing forums, but have spent plenty of time reading through all of the posts and absorbing as much information as possible for recruiting affiliates and launching digital products.

In doing so, i've noticed one thing: no one seems to ever talk about creative marketing efforts on here?

Ad words, facebook, email and affiliate marketing are all obviously tried and true methods for consistent traffic -- and certainly something that is important to know every facet of, but it's totally foreign to me not to also be thinking about creatively marketing your site(s) to get press, viral buzz, collaborations with established brands, celebrity endorsements, hosting events, etc, etc.

It seems like a lot of online marketers are so entrenched into online marketing, to the point that they forget some more traditional relationship building and out of the box marketing efforts. The kinds of things you'd do before the internet was a thing.

Doing the basics is essential, but you should always also invest in promotional gambles that may lead to huge traffic and / or customer waves. Send out a couple hundred dollars in cupcakes to potential partners, members of the press. Fire off some e-mails to people you admire. Do a publicity stunt. Court some bloggers. Find ways to attach yourself to authoritative brands "As seen in the offices of Google!, featured on MSNBC!" Be involved in a sex scandal (true story).

$200 in PPC should equate to a reasonably known amount of conversions, but also investing a little time and energy into a gamble / relationship building campaign can easily give you an infinitely higher return and nearly always gives you some cool opportunities and contacts.

I agree, creative marketing is something that should be discussed here more, because it should be in every marketers tool box. I have a few theories as to why it's not discussed more in a marketing forum of all places.

#1. Most of the marketers who start threads in this section are new, so they're focused on trying to learn the fundamentals of internet marketing, much less creative marketing. Not that you couldn't do both.

#2. Most of the experienced marketers who know about creative marketing (who still come here) seldom if ever start threads. Period.

#3. I've introduced the topic in various ways in the past, and usually they get very little or no response and go to page two like a lead rock.

Not to say you shouldn't start threads on the topic, perhaps it'll catch on eventually. It'd be nice to have it to help break up the ... "What would you do if you had $20, or the What do you think about the Dating, I.M or Health "Niche" type questions you see almost everyday.

I don't think you've looked hard enough. Use the search function and type in any of your "creative" techniques and you'll find threads and posts about all of them (of course, try some variations in words as not everyone uses the exact same terminology).

I don't think it's that so much as it is newbie and inexperienced marketers regurgitating things they've heard other people say. You go with what works and what is tested and proven - especially when you don't know anything else.

Many people come here broke and out of work looking for a way to make a few dollars a day. They can't afford to buy a domain name and hosting let along spend $200 on a gamble. I don't think I would ever suggest that a marketer gamble on a strategy. I would prefer to spend $20 on a test marketing (very small scale) and then scale up if it's profitable.

I am all for creativity . . . it's just not surprising to me that it doesn't get much talk given the kinds of folks that populate this forum.

I believe you're approaching my post from the vantage point of someone promoting an affiliate offer or a fairly run of the mill product. Under those circumstances, I'm completely with you. Test, scale, go to bed. But for marketers and developers who are working with brands and / or something that they're putting their blood, sweat and tears into in hopes of actually having something worthwhile in the long run (apps / sites / unique products / innovative store fronts), they absolutely should be looking beyond the common online marketing methods discussed on this site. In my opinion, that would be like a plumber only relying on the yellow pages or Yelp to get business, rather than also joining the chamber of commerce, promoting to rental management companies, working to cross promote with other repair services and offering their expertise on the news or in print "ask a plumber" newspaper columns.

Below is the first 6 months of one of my past projects. The traffic spikes came from completely free gambles. The resulting traffic amount led to local press, national television mentions and substantial acquisition offers. The offers, while not accepted, led to great opportunities with those companies in the time since.

The basics gave the site a foundation of traffic, the gambles turned it into something special. It would have taken an ungodly amount of PPC campaigns and test marketing to ever come within 100 miles of what it ended up getting.
