Obsessed About IM = Not Healthy

Hello Fellow Warriors,

I've been doing a ton of research lately such as on the WF and YouTube and Googling various subjects.

I'm finding the more I do the more confused I'm getting. It's like I'm getting 'too much' advice'. To the point where it becomes a dog chasing his tail.

I have the basics and sure it's nice to get different perspectives but it just gets to be too much and gets you to second guess yourself.

Ultimately at some point you have to jump in the pool.

It's also apparent that so many people are coming from a different perspective so their advice to you may not fit or work for you.

A lot of the advice is contradictory as well. I think we should be very careful about who we accept advice from.

Honestly I'm at the point there I need to have enough faith in my ideas after doing the best research I can do. It appears to me that many of the Warriors (myself included) are asking for others to 'see into the crystal ball' and give them a forecast of the future when obviously that is just not possible.

Maybe that comes from a fear of failure. But the more I learn about IM the more confusing I get. I think you can do way to much research and never really get started. Maybe it's going to take a failure of two before we get it right.

I'll say this about real estate and sales is it's no where near as confusing or contradicting. I heard a few guys talking about day trading vs internet marketing and which is more complicated well I would agree the mechanics of day trading are more complicated but at least there is a more straightforward path to take to be successful.

To sum it up internet marketing is the wild west of entrepreneurial ventures. Sales, Real Estate, Day Trading all have a more defined proven path to success I feel. Less risky too I believe as I keep hearing of people being penalized by Google in the search engines who are practicing white hat techniques only.

Maybe I'm wrong or maybe I'm just over analyzing it I don't know. Maybe that is just the way IM is.

Either way it seems very unstable path to me. Likely because there are so many more possible ways to go (so many niches) where as sales, real estate, and day trading are all very narrowed down already.

Could also be I'm over complicating it.

There are so many types of IM. Blogging, PPC, CPA, Clickbank (et al), list building, etc. You need to settle on doing one of these well. My suggestion is to build a list first.

Most people suffer from this problem. There are hundreds of issues and opinions and decisions and options to sort through. Unless we can get in control of it, we are doomed from the get go.

Something I do is I put limits on my decision making process. For example:

    1. I will decide on my target market and what I'm going to offer them by no later than tomorrow at 9:00 PM. Put a time limit on it.

    2. Even though I'm not sure exactly who or what my target market is, I'm still going to put up a blog and start getting some practice. I will start setting this blog up by no later than tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM. In other words, go for the minimum in the beginning if it all seems too overwhelming.

    3. I'm not even sure what my domain name should be because I'm still not sure about my target market. I don't want to waste domain name fees so what I'm going to do is to open a free Blogger blog and/or open a free FB business page and just start writing stuff. I will start by no later than this afternoon. This kind of limitation is very helpful because you can get started - no matter what. So let's say you start your FB page or Blogger page on raising toy poodles and then later you decide you want to really focus on everything wiener dogs. What have you lost? I would say nothing because you've gotten experience, you've gotten started, and haven't spent any money.

    4. Sometimes when I get really flustered, I have had to just flip a coin. Seriously. The important thing is to get off dead center and to quit going in circles. Flip a coin and get started. Then adjust as you go.

Good luck in figuring it out.

Yes, I think you are over-complicating it, by setting yourself up for failure before you've even begun. Do you hear yourself? You're basically saying, "I am afraid to get started because I might get Google slapped".

I get it - It's a lot easier to build an IM business in your head (even if one you eventually talk yourself out of) then put in the work. I think you are correct, you are reacting to a fear of failure.

Just start with the basics. Get going. You can tweak and adjust as necessary. I've seen people on here make seemingly successful websites, only to get the G-slap, and what do they do? Find a way around it - either correct the issue or start a new project once they see the old one no longer works. It's called thinking like an entrepreneur. To quote Zig Ziglar "You don't have to be great to start. But you do have to start to be great."

Step 1: Download/purchase some free courses.
Step 2: Log out of warrior forum, social media profiles, Gmail and skype.
    Step 3: Take action.
Step 4: Come back after a week and report.

    Thanks Warriors.

Yes sometimes you get so close to it you can't see the forest through the trees.

Both. You are talking it up - dreaming about riches - checking out this and that...and philosophizing a bit, too.

Every time you start writing about how much money a million is - or what might or might not be more confusing - or whatever....you put off DOING something.

You can do that for years - but it will never pay off. All the talk and conjecture and analysis...and it all comes down to this: If you want to earn something online...you have to sell something online.

Not dreaming about riches at all. I'm just trying to get a hold of all the decisions needed to be made in IM as there are A LOT more it seems than in sales, real estate, or day trading.

It can go in so many different directions.

You are making the most common mistake in IM - and that is "over-complicating" everything.

Most people get trapped into the research and the learning curve, so much they never really get fully started.

What you need to do is learn a little bit of knowledge, and then take massive consistent action with it. Find out for yourself if it truly works for your or not.

What also happens is most implement what they learned from their research, but they only take a little bit of consistent action and are expecting big results, fast. This is the wrong approach and it will only lead you to get burned out and frustrated.

You need to learn a little bit - take A LOT of consistent action. And never be afraid of making mistakes and failing. Because that is what is going to get you on the right path.

You have to fail your way to success here!

The mistakes and failures will mold you and get you on the right path. But you can only do this by taking a lot of freaking action.

You need to treat this as a REAL Business. If you want it to pay you like one.

I think most people do not treat this as a real business - they take more like a hobby, and the consequences of that is .... it will pay you like a hobby!! lol

The knowledge to make it happen is there. The knowledge to build a successful business online is there. Now, where is the will power, and the strong self-discipline to be consistent with the necessary work? ... it is all inside of you!

You should also invest in your education in this arena. You can't just do research using free resources. I recommend you to research on paid courses and trainings. You can check out the WSO marketplace here, for an instance.

You should also get a mentor. Or just follow one.

Follow those who are making it happen online. And model after them.

Let me tell you a simple advice - you need to MODEL after the successful people. Study and analyze them. Watch their every move, their every word.

And implement what they implement, and MORE!

One great way to approach this - is to find someone very successful who shares exactly what they have done to get their results online, and OUTWORK THEM!

    You get what I mean?

Build up a very strong self-discipline to put in the necessary work. Create your own schedule to follow. Create your own game plan, your own action plan. Craft the best daily routine you can follow.

You are your own BOSS here. And this means you are also your own employee. So, do not fire yourself!! haha

    Makes sense?!

It is easy to get overwhelmed with a lot of information. Don't go for easy - go for what takes a lot of effort and pain, because that is what will give you the best rewards!!

    I hope this helps you!!

Keep up the great work, and just get to work!!

  • Try to focus on one course/step and do/follow one advice at a time.

Like most of the people here said- you are over-complicating things. As a beginner who normally is overwhelmed about the whole IM stuff, you need to just pick one good course on IM; follow one guru and apply (right ahead) the things you've learned.

I always believe that researching, studying and reading all those IM stuff do not really count as knowledge unless you applied these things on your own. Additionally, hands-on experience will also make things clearer for you.
