Hi all,

I used to lurk on these forums about 10 years ago when I really thought I could make money online with affiliate marketing etc. Whist I made a little bit, it was pocket change. Now I would like to give making money online another shot, but I don't care for selling other peoples products. I am pretty good at CAD and I know there is a huge market to design components in the field I am in.

However, though I could make a website, a lot changes in 10 years and so I have no idea how to advertise it, what keywords to choose etc.

My business would 100% run online but it needs to be targeted at the right people, and that's where I am asking for help. How would I do that?

I am hoping to stick around in these forums and contribute as I learn. Maybe I'll even make a friend or two

Thanks,

James

My I suggest you get your brand awareness up the best way to do that is by the following

Post 3 times a day on your personal Facebook fan page 6am-9am, 11am-2pm and again between 7pm-9pm
Your morning post should be a motivation post, second post should be a skills post something you have designed in CAD and your third post should be a solution offer

Also post in linked groups & Google+ following the same pattern as your FB post

The idea is for you to be recognised as an authority in this field

Looks like you have a long way to go especially when you don't know how to identify a good market to explore not to talk of building a site right.

There are different ways you can approach this:

    1. Get a mentor.

    2. Read more and learn how to use the search engine and forums to get answers to your immediate problems.

    3. Create a time schedule and stick by it.

    4. Create room for experiment as the only thing constant in life is changes. Doing this can help you discover an untapped strategy that you can use to your advantage.

    Thanks for the comments above

I know who my market is, I just don't know how to let them know I exist. For example, I know I can't go into the street handing out flyers, and I know I can't go into the WSO and buy a shoutout on someones list.

The personal Facebook fan page, google + are excellent ideas, and I could regularly post to these with skills and useful help. Again the question would be how to get the right people to see it?

CAD is really niche, it isn't like setting up a weight loss site or dog training site that I could guarantee my facebook friends would be interested in. I do agree I have to be known as an authority in my field.

Google ppc looks a bit crowded for me but bing looks empty right now

    Thanks,

    James

      Hi James

It's always a good idea to keep things simple & have a system in place. Here's what I recommend.

      - Start a blog (search engine traffic/branding you/list building)
      - Build a list (relationship building/promote products)
      - You Tube videos (brands you/targeted prospect search)
      - For paid ads the ones that currently work well are solo ads, banner ads, FB news feed ads, You Tube ads (all can be targeted to your niche)
      - Find a mentor who is already successful online.

      Cheers
      Barry

Who is your market? If you know who the market is, you should be able to use Facebook ad targeting to reach them.

Every new website / brand that I setup is promoted with facebook to establish brand awareness. I now run 10 different sites and they all have loyal facebook fan bases that send traffic to my websites.

    James,

Here's my 2 cents, I hope it helps you out.

    1. Get a very focused niche. Most of the really successful online businessmen and women do this. If you don't, you'll waste marketing money, time and work. Having a focused niche makes your marketing efforts much easier because you don't have to be an expert at many things...Just one!

    2. Once you've found your niche, study the traffic tactics of IMers that are successful. Some of them lurk on here and can be a great help to you. You won't be able to do everything they tell you, but you can get some of it done.

    3. Start a service business immediately. If you have any expertise in a particular, applicable area of the business you are trying to start, then figure out a way to provide that service and get testimonials and happy clients. Put their testimonials on your site as soon as you can. The reason you want to start a business is so that you'll have business quicker than trying to create and market a product. Besides, you can always do that later.

    I hope this helps!

First make a website of your own with a unique domain name (brand name) and popularize it through social marketing. Go for google Adwords or facebook ads for getting the specific audience. Wish you all the success in your new business.

If you're unsure about your keyword selection, use google keyword planner or services like spyfy to gauge your market.

You might have to start again from ground zero. Purchase a good internet marketing course and learn how to market all over again. Yes things have changed over the past 10 years while you were out.... but these "piece-fed" answers in this thread will only leave you scratching your head. Start over again.

      Hi Guys,

Really great help coming in and I appreciate that. My head is already buzzing with ideas, but alas I have a lot of unknown and so I think I need a guide.

Without meaning to sound harsh, I think most of what's in the WSO section (or at least 10 years ago) is crap. Anything that says "let me show you how to make $50K in 2 days" is utter nonsense, and I'm sure the only people making money are the ones that actually sell the books.

Can anyone recommend a good starting guide. I need to know how to make a webpage seo friendly and how to get people coming to it that would actually require my services.

      Thanks,

      James

I would use Content Marketing. Meaning, I would create valuable articles, videos or whatever 1-2 times per week to get more exposure. You could also find some forums about that specific topic and become an active member.

Forum Traffic is very targeted Traffic, so actually you don't need that much like you would need if you'd use i.e. Google Adwords.

I would build a squeeze page around your topic, create a Lead Magnet and then I would drive traffic through Content Marketing and Forums to your Squeeze page.

In that way you build a list of targeted people and you're building your brand too.

What is a "squeeze page" and a "lead magnet"?

      Thanks,

A squeeze page is a landing page you create to gather email addresses from prospective subscribers by offering something in return, which you would then call a 'lead magnet' Are you following me?
