Losing traffic? Losing Ad Money? THIS COULD BE WHY

This is the first time in my net-connected history that I've seen Google plow over lyrics websites with their own (NON-public knowledge) "content."

Unfortunately, every lyrics site that I've visited depended on ad revenue, which we all know, depends on traffic.

But as you can see, Google put an end to that!

So if there were ever a more blunt answer to the question, "Is it better to have a product of my own?" -- this little incident shouts YES! loud enough be heard across the Internet.

With your own product -- that is, your own, original, doesn't - exist - anywhere - in - the - public - domain - and - isn't - shared - with - a - million - of - other - people original, product, you will reduce the odds of sitting under Google's butt like the sites in the graphic are.

I've tested this here and it's not happening. Perhaps it's a new feature being rolled out on the knowledge graph and hasn't reached Australia yet.

This is happening more and more and has been the subject of discussion in SEO circles for quite a while.

Google are doing it with the weather, football scores, information about people, basic information about a whole range of factual subjects and now perhaps lyrics.

Getting around the knowledge graph is tricky. Relying on Google for all of your traffic is just asking for trouble. An algorithmic change can wipe your traffic out overnight.

Running sites that provide widely available content and no added value is also asking for trouble. Directory sites have seen this, weather sites have seen this, it's nothing new and should be a good reason to start thinking about other ways to drive traffic to a site.

Better yet, provide valuable content that Google isn't going to suck up into the knowledge graph. Google, despite their size, cannot replicate your original content, copyright law prevents them doing so.

I made the mistake of relying on Google for my business five years ago. I will never make that mistake again. I would much rather use Paid traffic, and build a list then rely on SEO. Google can snap their fingers, and make first page rankings disappear.
