Search volume - help me understand

Hello. This is my first time doing keyword research and I have a simple question.

When analyzing a keyword search volume, everyone says that it has to be at least 1000 monthly searches, and I can understand that. My doubt is, each keyword for my website has to have that or all of them COMBINED need to pass that threshold?

The reason I'm asking that is because I'm planning on building an Amazon aff store and therefore I'm not gonna focus in only one keyword, but in a lot of other longtail low-search-volume keywords.

In all the research I've done in building my own business and just studying keywords in general, I've always seen that the sweet spot to building a multiple six figures business (or higher) is the 3000-5000 month search volume range.

I have proved that for my own business.. I target an area within the US, the total search volume is 3,800 around the keywords I focus on, and that business has become multiple six figures in 3 years.

However, it is not just one keyword. Like you mentioned, it is a whole group of keywords focused around the same thing. Some of them only get 50-90 searches a month. Some of the larger get 1000. Together they add up to be inside that sweet spot.

    Hope that helps!

First of all, know that keyword tools should only be used as a guideline, as they are usually a month or two behind the current date/ Secondly, when you are going to be promoting multiple products on one site, it's okay to have a lower search volume. In fact, the longer the keyword, the more this will happen. The trick is to optimize your article or whatever so that you get traffic for more than one keyword. For instance, if there are a number of similar keywords, you should write in such a way that you can capture some traffic from all of them.

Hey man your main keyword/s should each be at least 1000, I normally aim for 3000 but have gone for as low as 1000. If the click is worth a lot i.e because the sale is worth a lot to you (high payout) then thats ok. I'm ranking no1 for a keyword with 1900 monthly searches and I get about 10-15 clicks a day from it.

Hope that helps and good luck :-)

The trick is really to get away from the tools and into real data as soon as possible. and what is real data you ask? well in Google Webmaster Tools ( WMT ) you can get an idea of where the traffic is in relation to where your pages are positioned.

Once the site is up and running.. you have a wealth of data in your little fingers... I believe the sooner you can get away from the less than valid data of keyword planner and into the realm of REAL pertinent data the better off you are.

( Im not saying keyword planner doesn't have its place... like the initial keyword process - but after that Ill take real and valid data all day long )

Get into WMT and then get into "Search Traffic" then "Search Analytics" make sure that there is a check mark next to "Clicks" "Impressions" "CTR" and "Position" you then have a nice set of data to start looking at.

I personally like to sort by "Impressions" and compare that number to "Position" if you are getting 60 impressions for a term you are ranking back on page 5 for... you might consider working on boosting that page.

There are many ways to look at those 4 numbers in correlation to each other to determine what terms you should be shooting for.
