Creating a video for YouTube

I have recorded a video with my webcam and now want to edit it slightly but cutting off the first 1 second of the clip. Then I want to upload it to my YouTube account.

What software is best for editing this and what format should I upload to youtube?

Thanks,

Jon

Choice of software is up to you - do a search in Google for "video editing software" and you'll find lots. If you just want to shorten the clip slightly Windows Movie Maker (which comes bundled with XP Pro) will do the job for you.

YouTube prefers .avi files, but as they're quite large and take a while to upload, I usually upload .wmv format (which they will also accept).

Definitely check your Windows to see if you have Movie Maker. It's pretty easy to use. You can edit that little part out and save it then upload it.

If you don't have Movie Maker on your computer.. here's a download link for it.

Maybe you could try Jaycut.com ? You can edit your videos online.

I agree, windows movie maker is a cinch to use and comes with windows.

Once you've edited it you can upload it in the same format you save it in.

I created a video in wmv format and then imported into Windows Movie Maker. I wanted to clip off the first second of my clip so I dragged the slider.

After saving to my computer, the playback shows it has clipped off the first couple of seconds of audio.

Why is this and how do I stop that?

Yes, it will edit both audio and video because they're tied together in sync. If you're audio starts immediately and you're shaving 1 second, then that's 1 second of audio too

But if there's a second before the audio starts, then re-do the edit, but using the (+) zoom feature to zoom in on the timeline so you can see exactly where you're editing. By blowing up the timeline, you can make more precise edits.

Give that a try, then preview it before saving.

You have to click on the time (so you see the bar over the entire clip), then drag to have the clip highlighted. When you do that it should highlight the video and audio. You hit "delete" or backspace on your computer and the clip should disappear.

It seemed buggy. I saved in a different format and I didn't get the missing audio.

I used to be heavily into video editing. Personally? I hate windows movie maker. Of course for simple editing like what you are looking for, you should have no problem with it. But if you are doing anything else be prepared for it to randomly freeze and shut down. As the rule with any editing, save often!!

I'd strongly recommend doing a quick google search for free movie editing software, download it, and if you have to, just delete it when done. Trust me, you will be a lot happier this way. Some of the big names also offer free demos. Doesn't have all the features but normally does enough to get bye.

For video editing software, I preffer to use a mac. Their iMovie is great and it took me about 20 min to learn how to use it. Really user friendly. You can also uplaod right to YouTube from it which makes it great.

For screen capture that is free, I have been using the CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software that Dave mentioned above. It is definately not a proffessional grade software but for me, it's all I have needed so far.
