At that large scale I would suggest contacting other major websites in your niche and asking them if they would be interested in buying it. Also, posting a notice on the home page that the site is for sale could possibly attract attention and offers.

Does the forum currently earn a profit? If so, you will have a much easier time selling it.

If you are desperate to dump it as fast as possible, you could try this site which focuses on selling profitable websites. I've never used them but they may be able to accommodate you.

At that size, definitely talk to the large brands in your sector, or their PR companies. You may also want to talk to any large affiliate marketers in your sector.
I guess the questions are does it make money now? How much do you want for it? (that limits who you can ask) and can you transfer it? (no hidden clauses on email ownership/marketing etc)

You need a broker in order to get the most out of this sale. Don't sell it on your own if you don't have negotiating skills!

A broker for sure.. without question do not pass go do not collect $200.

depending on the niche itself, I would say that just the list alone is worth $1.00 per user.

      Congratulations!

    Viral,

I had the same experience and ended up selling mine to a competitor. I echo the advice regarding Flippa etc. Does the forum produce an income, is it in a market that can be monetized easily or is it part of a membership site? All of those factors will effect the amount you can sell it for. Obviously you want to get as much as you can for it and here are a few tips to get the most for it, from my experience when we sold ours

The year before you sell it, you will want to run it as lean as possible. Cut out the fat whenever you find it and accelerate the membership growth as much as you can.

It's not just the number of members' that your community has, it's also the delta factor: that is, it’s rate of change. A 20 percent annual membership growth over the past 5 years will generate a far higher price than will a 10 percent annual membership growth.

A higher renewal rate is critical as well. If members drop off at less than 5 percent annual rate, you will be in a far better shape to command a high price for your community than if the rate is double that number. If your drop our rate is more than 5 percent, then introduce some incentives to revive it.

I can give you the names of some brokers who can help you and companies who will be most likely to buy it from you. Send me a PM if you are interested.

    Thanks.

    Rich

Also see whether it's really okay to move out of the forum.

A forum I know was going up for sale, but many of the oldest members said they'd quit if the forum was sold and the current admin quit, so ultimately the decision was taken back. It'd be a good idea to see what the members of the forum think about you selling it.

Since you don’t want to sell on Flippa, (I don’t think other Flippa-type selling platform is the right choice for you), I would focus on contacting other forums that seem to be very busy.

At the very least, they get a lot of traffic and they seem to have a lot of commercial activity.

You might want to contact those people or the companies behind those businesses.

There are lots of companies that are looking to consolidate within a niche, or branch out.

Since they are already successful in the forum game, you might want to give them the opportunity to take over your forum.

Keep in mind that the chances of them buying your forum will turn greatly on whether your traffic is real, and your conversion rate.

Few people would buy a money-losing company unless they have a clear idea on how to turn that particular asset around.

I saw the Warrior Forum listed on Flippa a few years back, but I would definitely seek the help of a broker rather than go at it alone. Not only should they negotiate the best deal in your favor, but they'd likely put in the leg work of contacting potential buyers that you never even knew existed.
