Forum and blog comment done right

What is the best way to go about forum and blog commenting?

I have read various sources saying that linking (in signature) is is bad as each time you comment on a forum it creates another link which is bad for SEO. Is this true? If, so how can I do it correctly?

The best way to do forum and blog commenting is to NETWORK with people so they find you CREDIBLE enough to link to.

Seriously. No joke. It's all about CREDIBILITY.

The days of driveby sig spam are over.

You have to put in the time.

Back when I was younger and stupider I did just that. I posted the same copy and paste comment on blogs. When it hit the search engines I looked like a complete idiot. Well thought out comments. Some blogs allow links back to your site. Show what you know.

I understand that but how are they supposed to be aware of my site if I am not linking to it.

I think most people on this forum use signatures for making contact with real people, not for SEO purposes which will always be at the mercy of whatever Google's latest algorithm does.

As I write this post there are nearly 12,000 active users on the site which is a big audience. If you provide good content and help people out as much as possible then others will be more likely to want to know who you are, and that is where your signature file is useful.

Post comments only when you actually have something relevant to say and not a one word reply. What people want to read are your thought on the matter, not the sig that promotes your site.

Make remarks that are actually readable, and not the type you just skip off and ignore.

The only way to comment in forums or blogs is to add value to the conversation and do it on a regular basis. If you are one of the bloggers most valuable commenters then others will take notice and want to see what value you deliver on your own site via your link.

This is where you could really muck it up.

If you have been dropping affiliate links as you blog comment link then the game is up and people will see you for what you are, a splogger.

Instead leave a link to your blog or main site and do your selling and affiliate promotion from your own site. The same applies in forums with your signature link.

If your goal is promoting, then only promote on forums that allow signatures. If they allow signatures, then pitch your brief in your signature.

Some blogs like to install "disqus" as their blog commenting choice. I've never seen a way to legally promote my site on the disqus platform. In instances like this, find other blogs in your niche to comment on that has a field where you can enter your website address.

A good example would be Aweber's blog.

Signature isn't the only way you can get free traffic with forums. It calls Networking. What's Networking? I'll give you one example, you find someone who's selling a product in the same niche and suggest him to give your monetized product as a free bonus for his customers, and vise versa.

A site line advantage is that when you keep on making positive comment on blogs with much traffic other website owners start noticing and networking with you as sscot rightly mention above. The benefits can grow even more bigger when one of such webmasters visiting your blog decides to write about your site or blog. This will dramatically increase your traffic.

The best thing about forum or blog commenting is it always delivers very targeted traffic as compared to Google.

Driving traffic from blogs and forums is one which takes time and effort.

As a few of the guys have said in previous comments, spamming blogs with comments and forums with posts is dead, people are way to savvy now and also technology has moved on so a lot as well.

Again, mentioned already, forums and blog commenting is a tool to network with like minded people in your niche, this build authority and friendships and this drives traffic.

Regarding link building, you will find most blogs and forums are nofollow nowadays so they wouldn't count towards your SEO efforts, there are obviously exceptions to this rule but I would focus my efforts elsewhere.
