Hi guys,
I want to start selling my fitness videos and possibly other materials as downloads. What's the best way to do this securely that will provide good service to the customers and straight-forward access but won't allow them to share the files with others or post them on file-sharing sites?

Thanks :-)

You could create a store with wordpress using woocommerce.

Woocommerce enables you to have secure downloadable products!

Thanks Jack107 I've been looking at Woocommerce but can't find info how it stops people sharing files once they've bought and downloaded, do you know what they have in place for that?

Can't say I have had to do it but just did a quick google search and from the sounds of this article you can limit the amount of time links are active for plus other things.

Thanks Jack107. I can see how that would stop people sharing the download link, but I'm unclear on what's to stop them sharing the file once they've downloaded it...?

I see, very tough position to be in but reading a few posts from the above linked forum there are some ways, but it sounds like people will always find a way to pirate

    Thanks Regional Warrior and Jack107.

I'm not really worried about screen-casting - as people said in the linked thread, if pirates want something that badly they will probably always find a way.

But I would like something in place so that the files can't simply be emailed to another person once downloaded.

...Or is even that not really practical?

I already have a members site where I stream the videos. But there's demand for downloads as, understandably, a lot of people would like to be able to view the videos at times when they don't have a (reliable) internet connection.

I don't think you can stop them not to share the product once they have purchased it.

I understand you have a wordpress site.
Try to use "Easy Digital Downloads" plugin!

You can use plugins like s2member to start your own membership site, it's user-friendly as well

    Good luck Julia

Hollywood and companies with extremely deep pockets haven't been able to stop video/software/music theft. It's really practically impossible to do it in a customer friendly way. For example, there might be something that requires a customer to activate the video and it only works on one PC. But then when they are visiting their parents for the week they can't workout or when they are out of town on business they are stuck and it sounds like convenience is one reason you are looking at this option. Note I don't know if something like that is available for videos but I know it is for things like PDF files.

No one wants their stuff to be stolen but one point of view is that it's good to have that problem. Meaning that people like your routines and are sharing them freely (stealing) because you are doing a good job of marketing a good product. Then hopefully some of the receivers want to get their own copy or their own membership or upgrade to the DVD set or whatever.

    Mark

Edit: I'd use the S2Member you have already set up and take advantage of their download restrictions and go for it. Also some people put benefits in their products that may get passed around that turns into a win. For example, give them something free for joining your email list. Then you can sell them on future routines.

If someone wants to steal and share your content, they will.

If it's video, all they have to do is screen capture yours as it plays. There are more elegant methods, but that is quick and cheap. Being behind a membership wall doesn't matter; they just buy the access, record the content, and then refund.

If it's a pdf, they have it as soon as they download the document.

So it's really not worth worrying about.

I have seen a paid product that stamps your pdf with identification of the buyer. That way, if they share it around the pdf says who the source was. But who knows, they could have given it to one friend who is the actual black hatter. Makes tracing down the source easier, but not 100% accurate.

People are GOING to share your content. There's no way to completely lock it up. Even if you were to dispense with digital download entirely and put everything on a thumb drive or CD you mailed out, someone would still share it.

Do your best, put up a basic security wall (Dropbox, membership site, Amazon S3, etc.) to discourage the less competent, and then move on.
