How many websites and or businesses do you run?

After having been trying with more than 20 sites at a time, i learned that one at a time is best. Once you have built it enough traffic, you can move to creating a second site. However, do not overinvest in a single project if you do not see any progress after two or three months.

I earn, on average, over 6 figures per month selling my own brand ecommerce products.
Not sure what you mean by passive. In my world nothing is really passive.

Completely agreeing with you. This is the best to have One business, One website, One platform (Depends on your business). After you have succeeded with one, start another one.

Right now, I have like 7 or 8 sites that are currently active. I recently just let some go, which I if the income they make isn't really worth maintaining the site. I have a larger one and the rest are smaller ones. One is in the internet marketing niche, but the rest are outside of it. I personally feel like the sites outside of the IM one are the most fun to make. I make money the same way with all the sites I run -- affiliate marketing, which means the income is more or less passive, but I work on some sites more than others.

8 years ago I had over 1.000 domain names and many small "Made for AdSense" websites.
Now I just have 5 websites left. 3 I never look at, 2 are my main projects and they are connected with each other.

At the end I found out, that focusing on one project brings me more then having a 1.000 small projects and idea's.

likewise, I have over 50 domains, 120 websites, 2 main blogs. But the big revenue comes from only 5 of those sites - the others I hardly look at. Biggest share of revenue comes from my lists, of which there are many segments.

Let me start by saying I'm new but I checked out your site. It needs to be prettier. Get a theme that is mobile friendly and integrates the the two columns better as they are fighting each other now.
A picture is worth a thousand words, get some stock photo's. The site header should be elegant simple picture that symbolizes renewing with some message wrote in a pretty font. 2 more pictures should be integrated somewhere in this page possibly a late 20's professional woman watching a happy child while her laptop is open and another where the same type of person is handing a stack of files to a smiling happy older medical doctor type person. The fonts in the body of your site have to change, not too fancy but the ones you have now are UGLY and all the same (needs to be a little bigger and bolder still in black though maybe a total of 2 or 3 font styes max, ex. 1 or the headers, 1 for writing above or in pictures and 1 for the body) . Also turn the first hyperlink blue and bold the letters and the second either replace with an action button or at least have the last paragraph in a different font style/height/color something and create a slightly stronger sense of urgency, not spamy or cheesy but stronger than what is there now.

I have seven sites (all non-IM) most of which have a very general relationship. Each of these sites requires weekly attention (new content, upgrading, monitoring, etc.). I spend on average of 7-10 hours a week in total on the sites. If I counted the time I consume trying out new plugins, reviewing 'new' products, and sitting in on webinars and educating myself in general, I would probably easily double that time. Nothing passive about that.

The sites are basically Adsense/affiliate and that occasional product that I incorporate into the mix on occasion.

As to how much money they generate, even the IRS doesn't know. Just kidding if you work for the IRS. hahahahaha

I started out with a number of sites, around 10. Found minimal traffic and minimal success. Found that concentrating on 2 or 3 at the most gives the best return. As others mentioned before, no site is anywhere near passive if you want to have success. The more time I spend, some learning and some doing, the better return I get. Building slow and steady reaps the biggest benefits

Thank you very much! These sites are far from what one would classify as "passive". Very work intensive to keep properly updated even with some automation.

Would like to add just one site that with proper SEO could be a little more passive but not easy to find the time.

I was puzzled by this post (#37) because I noticed that one of them is just a very spartan parking page. Then I saw the date on the post, July of last year. It's ironic because the best url of the three referred to there is now just the parking page, and it appears to be the kind that cannot be making any $ for the poster but only for the hoster.

I think anyone starting out should have a basic beginner site to start generating a list AND just seeing what works. Don't ruin your brand or reputation right off the bat failing at what you really want to do. After that, build your true brand when you are ready and "launch" it to your existing list as a new brand and knock their socks off.

I have, on average, about 200+/- "mini-sites" and blogs that generate anywhere from $80 to $1,000 a month or more. Not all of them are big producers, but taken as a whole, they bring in anywhere from $20K to $30K per month.

The downside is that it took me over 8 years to build them all, and when one venue retired, I had to replace it with something else... and keep building.

Another downside is the maintenance: if you have them on multiple sites/servers, it can become tedious to keep track of them all if you don't have a coordinated way to keep track of them.

It's almost like trying to herd a bunch of kindergarteners on a field trip to the amuzement park... :-)

The upside: if you can get the steady flow of long term, passive income coming in on a steady business, you just might be able to take a vacation after 10 years.

That sounds almost like a double edged sword, doesn't it?

Three sites, 1 was an Amazon Affiliate but am switching to adsense/affiliate deals. The others are adsense.

I too, had too many spinning plates (around 10 websites) and let most of them go - as they weren't generating much income, but what they taught (in development, and trying to run) was irreplaceable.

I agree 100%. Many times failing is success. Maybe not in $ but definitely in knowledge. The old school of hard knocks as it is known.

And I am always open to comments, critiques and suggestions on any of my sites. (a couple of the losers I dare not show as I am sure many readers here could easily write a book critiquing them).

I have two sites, and I'm building a third. All in the same industry.

My first site is my R&D site. It's where I try new things and push the boundaries.

My second site is my production site that's steady and stable. I put 1-2 hours a month into this site and it brings me 80% of my income.

My third site takes all that I've learned about the industry I'm in and takes it to a new level with visitor interaction.

All of my sites are 100% passive income. When I'm not developing new code, I work less than 4 hours a week on my business and it provides all of my income.

Success did not come over night. It took 3 years of hard work, using 30 years of experience to achieve.

Focusing on 1 thing is the key.

First Business: 9 Years. Google Local SEO for Clients in the UK and South Africa. - Active

Second Business: 6 Months - Affiliates Shops in Ebay. $1500 per Month - increasing by 20 to 30 % per month. - Passive

How do you earn income from each?
First Business: Constantly Monitoring there ranking.

Second Business: Research Niche Product or Trending Products - Buy domain - Auto Build Site - SEO Sites. Usually start making my first few dollars within a week or 2 and it grows from there. Each Niche has it pro and cons.

What percent of your current income is passive income?
About 20% but my goal it to replace my active within a year or 2.

1 business, 10 websites

How many blogs do you have?
This is really the same question as the # of websites

How do you earn income from each?
Business: It's a service business that also offers products.
Websites: On all the websites I have a mixture of standard ads (adsense, etc...) and affiliate links / custom made ads. As a matter of fact, 9/10 of my sites have some form of affiliate interaction built into a main part of the content for every page.

What percent of your current income is passive income?
Passive? 0% lol. I've spent months upon months coding to simplify the content process as well as writing out manuals and automating everything possible (social media, mailing lists) but you still need to update your site and work on it to keep everything running smoothly.

Not having too many sites is a good thing in my opinion, unless your business is domain brokering.

Actually I am a Banker. I have been working at my Bank 8 hours 5 days per week except 2 days day off. Then I am working with the IM Every day 2 or, 3 hours per day. The 2 day off I work more than 8 hours in the IM section. Now I am earning a good amount of money from this section. I use one website/ 1 blog site & Many social media sites. Thanks a lot.

I used to have around 30 active websites; that is a really BAD idea, constant stress and the feeling of having things to do.

If anyone cares, best is up to 3 sites with different category/content/strategy. One can fail to provide income if you do a bad move, best to have 2-3.
Better than the 2nd or 3rd site would be an additional offline business.

If I look at around 10 that I have now, the 80-20 rule applies: 20% of the sites make over 80% of the total income. I am curious if this applies to other people too. Does it ?

Passive income... This is rare but I have a nice domain I purchased for $1000 (wasn't sure at that time) put some content on it and never touched it since. Made over 50 000 euros in last 10 years. Ad click rate is huge, 15% and cpc $0.40.

I have one large website, have had it for 11 years. I make my money from affiliate sales.

I also have a string of smaller websites. Parked domains, failed experiments, current experiments, old business ventures, blogs, etc. Over the years I've made a lot of money from this subset, but nothing compared to my one large website...

I will say this... Being an affiliate sucks. You are at the mercy of forces that are out of your control. Google hates you, your partners want to get something for nothing, and with a commission or algorithm tweak a substantial part of your revenue can dissolve overnight. There used to be a much better lifestyle associated with being an affiliate. Long vacations, fewer work hours, lots of time with the family, etc. Now a days, its a grind that is going to lead to an inevitable, poor conclusion...

Earn through product sales.

About 75% passive. Everything is outsourced now. But I constantly check on things just about every day out of habit and I spend time expanding.

Work on your business, not in your business. As they say.

When starting out passive income is difficult. One of my sites which makes about $1000 per month, is a plain html website, (no WordPress updates or hacking overheads) has sales driven by one main Youtube video with at present about 1.7m views. This is from a video that I published in 2009 but it does increase sales as the views increase.

The website is in the cell phone number search niche, in case you are wondering. Heres a screenshot of one of the sites in this niche I run with zero effort.

Passive income gets easier when everything is automated, as some above have mentioned and can take years of effort to get there.

Best way to look at your efforts, as investing in an IPA. Income Producing Asset. The better that asset solves someones problem the better the returns will be.

Makes perfect sense when you look at it this way. It doesn't matter if it is an affiliate site, made for adsense, software, or information products, if you keep this in mind when building your site(s) you will be building a better mouse trap (well at least for yourself anyway).

It is tempting to think that there is easy money to be made online, with shortcuts and secrets but really it just requires finding someone who has a workable model, learning this and replicating.

Passive income will come when you meet the demands of your target audience and selling other peoples products (as affiliate) is probably the best model for hands free and little maintenance. But the big money is in developing your own brand and products and depending on what you are selling the income can be relatively passive, or at least a lot better than workin' for the man!
