Quick Question: Does Google Analytics work retroactively?

I'm trying to sell a website on Flippa and I'm being asked to add Google Analytics to my website. That said, if I add the code to my website, is it going to be able to post my traffic stats to Flippa from previous months? Or will Google Analytics only post my stats to Flippa going forward, while showing zero traffic for last month?

  • No. GA will only start collecting data (for you) after you insert the code to your website.

    • Thanks. That's somewhat crazy to me. I added Analytics because Flippa told me it used Analytics to verify traffic. So I add Analytics to my Flippa listing... and then it shows that my website has only had two visitors in its history. Not exactly the best system for sellers.

  • As far as I know, it works from the time you install it. Well, it also says it can take a day for the tracking to start showing up.

  • No, it worke off the code you place
  • If you add your analytic email to flippa it will show all the months where your website had that code in it.
let's say on jan 1 you added analytics to your website and you decided to list your website on flippa on 1 april and added you analytics account there, it will show analytics from january to 1 april
  • I'm sure you're joking with your question, but no, it will not.

However, you CAN get statistics by looking at your web server's logfile. There are plenty of free/trial web statistic programs out there to give you nearly the same information as Google Analytics.
  • No, Google doesn't have anything to collect until you add the code
  • Oh sweet baby Jesus.
You actually weren't asking a joke question.
