    In one word. Education.

You need to constantly learn and enhance your skills and knowledge if you want to be good at something. And more importantly, you have to fail. I learnt my greatest lessons from my biggest failures and I constantly remind myself of where I went wrong once upon a time when I come against a familiar obstacle.

I spent so much time building websites that never made it and learning SEO inside out to try and rank them. In the end, I did learn how to get websites ranking, they just weren't the ones that I started out with. In an interesting twist of irony, after spending years building websites and learning SEO I had developed and educated myself in those skills so much that I started an SEO and Web Design company. Maybe you could do something similar down the track?

To also touch on something you mentioned, I think copyrighting is absolutely essential. You will be surprised how much writing you will have to do and knowing how to write compelling and optimized content will get you that extra mile. Whether you are writing emails to clients or lengthy copy for your websites, you need constantly fine-tune this skill.

    Looking forward to others replies.

Thanks for the insight. What would you say is the most important aspect of SEO? You always hear horror stories and great ones. One of my partners started a site then dumped it and came back and found it was rankings, only wished he would have kept contributing to the site.

  • This can be seen on different levels. The best skill is the ability to take consistent action, the willingness to fight through the failures, and the motivation to keep gainig knowledge.

However on a less deeper level I would say, Knowing how to convert and Copywriting !

One important skill that can't be overlooked is your ability to communicate and get your point across as efficiently as possible.

Some good examples of this can be seen by observing the best copywriters in the world. They say
only what they need to and not much more. Simple and direct, yet highly effective.

Also, if you enter a particular niche, you will need to let others see you have knowledge and are worthy of their attention.

Lots of good answers so far. But to be honest 99% of the things everyone said can be outsourced, delegated or bartered. The one essential Internet Marketing skill you must have even if you're rich as Carlos Slim, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs is (drumroll please) ... "How To Make Smarter Decisions"!

It's something most people take for granted or totally ignore as far as being a skill. It's so important even if you have 'boat loads' of skills and millions of dollars to play with, just make a few dumb decisions and you can lose a big chunk ...or all of it. Or if you have little or no money, make enough smart decisions and you can have lots of it.
Most of us fall somewhere in between the two extremes. Every success starts and ends with successful decisions. No Exceptions!

The good news, it's a skill that can be developed. You don't have to just depend on experience or getting kicked in your b*lls to make better decisions, unless that turns you on. Note: Some people like the drama.

But for those who like to "learn" ...without being "burned"! Check this vid out.

There are many IM strategies that don't require being a good salesman.

If you can get traffic you can send people to affiliate programs and let those product owners do the selling. It doesn't matter how good a sales letter is if no one sees it.

AdSense, CPA and others don't require any selling to make money.

This is golden advice. You can be extremely proficient in many different areas, but if you don't know how to sell you're basically relegated to working for someone else who wants to pay you for that skill (at best).

Broken down into the most simple terms, the only way you're going to make money is if it is given in exchange for a product or service -- so if you're proficient at selling that product or service online then you're golden!

How do you sell without traffic?

Just one more example...there's a number of people on Youtube that are great entertainers, have no salesmanship in their videos, yet make millions. But they do have a lot of viewers and let YT/Google sell for them.

This is the classic chicken or egg dilemma. Both are really important, and if you are getting abysmal conversions because you can't sell (despite having tons and tons of traffic) then the traffic is useless.

Also in many cases, if you have good copy, your sales page "flows", and you're good at selling yourself to JVs, you'll get people clamoring to promote your offer for you -- so the traffic comes as a result of your good salesmanship.

Let's just agree that both are very important.

        TONY ROBBINS DECISIONS - YouTube
Man I really appreciate that you are so right. Making decision seems small but is huge. I got caught up in analyzing sometimes but have learned to evaluate things without running the hamster wheel. Its about risk and reward, according to what you want. I try and pick the less risk for the most reward and make the decision swiftly and stick with it. Easier to see in practice than type it but overall if we know what we want, are willing, and are prepared will make the best decision that is a win win for everyone its all gravy

I would say it depends on what you are marketing. If its affiliate offers its Lead generation. That is why some companies pay good monies for leads because good product + no leads equals 0$$$ but good product + leads equals lots of$$$.

This doesn't apply to IM but in all aspects of life. If you love what you do, the money will follow. The basic of Internet Marketing is understanding traffic and conversion. Most gurus tell you that you need both (duh - if you can get traffic but can't convert, or if you can convert but can't get traffic, you won't make money). If I had to pick one, I'd master conversion i.e. COPYWRITING SKILLS. Because you can always buy traffic if your funnel converts!

    Hi All,

Just to share my experience, I was exudes into the IM world from a seminar in my city. At the moment I was just looking for networking for my physical product business. I was amazed by the presentation that I used up my saving to sign up for the Guru from Australia. Little did I know that I was never a one push button effort to create passive income. Fast forward 5 years till now, the most important skill in internet marketing would be TAKE MASSIVE ACTION.

Like what some wise man said " Ready, Fire , Aim !"

It was never about the perfection, it was just about the DOING.

Yeah, copywriting is the most important skill in Internet Marketing. Convincing an Internet Surfer to buy your product in the midst of tons of scams, hype and lies, is one of the hardest things one can do online.

That's where copywriting comes to your rescue - so learn this important skill.

The greatest Internet Marketers have always been the greatest copywriters or at least ones who can afford the service of a great copywriter. Make a research and you will find out for yourself.

To be honest, the best skill is FOCUS. Even if you are in a lucrative niche and you try and do 1000 different things all together, you wont see success. If you try and fail and give up, no success. Just train yourself to FOCUS even when the going is tough.

If there is one thing I've learned in over 20 years of IM, it's that you can't predict what niches, what web sites, or what strategies are going to work long-term. Therefore, you have to be willing to try multiple niches/sites/strategies and then focus your attention and work on those that seem to be working. I've found that spending my time and energy improving a site that is working is worth more than spending it to build new sites.

If anyone tells you that he has a fool-proof strategy, he would be wrong. I've had sites that worked very well, then applied the same strategy EXACTLY to other sites that didn't do well at all. Why? Who knows. The Internet is a strange, unpredictable beast.

The most important skill is the skill to develop skills to the point of profitability.

(and outsourcing, as some have mentioned to disqualify some skills for the candidacy of "Most Important Skill", also requires the skill to outsource effectively).

What Is The Most Important Skill For Internet Marketing?
Nothing else matters unless you have targeted traffic.

Over the years this question has been asked dozens of times, if not more. And I never understand why people think "selling" is more important than traffic.

You can have the best sales letter in the world, but if no one sees it, it doesn't matter.

I've sold advertising and domains without even putting them up for sale, simply because someone found me and wanted these things. I didn't even have contact info, they had to get it from my domain registar.

There's plenty of people on Youtube that create entertaining or informational videos that don't sell anything. They simply have popular videos that get lots of traffic and let Youtube (or some other partnership) do the selling.

I won't go down the path of listing specific skills, but I will share a CONCEPT that has served me well, and it's one that ANYONE can do.

The concept is: LEARN > DO > TEACH

What I mean by this comes down to this:
    1) LEARN A SKILL - whatever it may be, do your best to learn a valuable skill related to your marketing.
    2) DO THE SKILL - Once you have figured it out, take massive action with that skill, until you have it mastered.
    3) TEACH THE SKILL.. in your own way, create something, a document, a video, a screen capture, whatever you like to SHARE that new found skill with others.

Gradually you will be regarded as an expert and an authority on the topic, which will help you in all sorts of endeavors.

    Hope that helps.

I think having a business plan is more important than anything. Who's your ideal client/customer? Where do they go online for information? How can you get your message in front of their eyes? What's their big hang up? You should know these things before you try anything.

Once you have a business plan create a daily action planer and follow it every day. This is the only way you can stay focused and it help's you measure your results. For example, one of your daily assignments can be writing a page of an eBook. If you write one page a day for 100 days following your action plan, then you will have a product to sell in 100 days. Just figure out what you need to do and make a plan that you can easily follow.

      Copywriting.

      First, watch this video:

Without question, the #1 thing that led to me going from minimum wage, homeless, total bomb to making high six figures a year was sitting down every day in hand copying sales letters/print offers.

If you spend 15 minutes a day just looking at sales copy, thinking about why it works, how it works, and drawing your own conclusions...

      ... Without studying ANYTHING ELSE...

... And you did this every single day for the rest of your life (a simple but difficult thing to do)...

... You will be astounded at what your subconscious will do for you in propelling you forward toward success.

Just looking at what other people are selling, how they are selling it, what positioning they are using, how they are framing offers etc. all that stuff will seep into your brain and then when you go to figure out "how to sell stuff" and "how to make money" you'll be able to recognize legitimate strategies because your brain will be full of things that actually worked in the real world.

Besides, there isn't an aspect of making money online that doesn't require copywriting.

Even if you plan on doing media buys for CPA stuff... You still need copy.

Even if you want to sell Internet marketing services to brick-and-mortar businesses... He still need copy.

Even if you want to sell information marketing products to Internet newbies... You still need copy.

You can get away from it.

And knowing how to make money from words that you write means that you'll never go hungry again.

    Learning to be effective.

Thinking about it, putting a half-hearted effort, trying to pull a "get rich quick" trigger, and believing success is easy, will make you in-effective.

So apply the above posted skills that other have suggested > List Building (create relationships of value) > Copywriting (effective communications skills) > Product Creation (needs fulfilment).

    Pretty simple stuff hey?

A lot of great answers here and to be honest I agree with most of them.

What I would say is having a high converting offer and sales funnel.

You pay or generate the same amount of traffic to sell a $27 for example as if you sold that same product but had relevant upsells and downsells built in.

If a customer has there credit card out or pays using PayPal they are in the "buying mood".

So even if the first product in your funnel is only say $7, there is still a good chance they will purchase further upsells or downsells.

As annoying and frustrating as they may be to us as buyers the fact is a) we expect them, and b) THEY WORK!!

    Mindset!

How you are looking at your business. Your thoughts lead to feelings, your feelings lead to actions and those actions lead to the results you get.

The way I looked at my business and what I was doing changed and when that happened so did my results.

We all do the same thing but only few get results. Why is that? Some will say he's lucky or its the mechanics but here's the thing. Success is 80% mindset and only 20% mechanics.

Still can't figure out why your not making any money yet?

anyone in here that said something to DO WITH LISTBUILDING, are light years ahead of other warriors.

You do not see multi million dollar companies, built on SEO, Copy writing, blog posts, and stuff like that.

These guys understand, that for HUGE PROFITS to come, you have to capture leads every day, and have a list. If you do not do this, from day 1, you are simply waisting your time.

One of my students has found a way to get 5 leads everyday for his business, and its changing his life. Yes 5 a day. So just imagine if you get 20 or 30 leads every day. 20 or 30 targeted leads every day will basically mean you will never have to work a crappy 9 to 5 job again. Infact, if you are working a crappy 9-5 job, your boss has already found a way to get 5-10 leads a day, probably more. So, why dont you find a way, and fire your boss and work for youself....yes.....think about that for a minute.

The most important skill is selling. Convincing some other human being that they need what you have. People are the only ones that can pay you. Not dogs and not cats.

Doing any business starts with finding a need and filling it. Need=problem that people have. Filling It=Solution. Within any problem is the solution. Find that solution and target your message (ad, email, etc) to the people that need that solution. That is called Marketing.

Then, Generate leads=Clicks. Convert Leads/Clicks =Sales, Client Fulfillment=Product/Service Delivery. And after that?

By providing that first solution, there is another inherent problem. Find that solution and now you have your next product and service, and you could spiral your business upwards. It's called Problem, Solution, Problem, Solution (and you can repeat it as many times as you need).

The Question was "What's The Most Important Skill For Internet Marketing?" That would be it for me.

    Just sharing.

like any business, skill + relation + luck

skill: you need to know how to do research, marketing and make the deal
relation: you need to build and keep your customer happy via a hot offer and good after sales service
    luck: success=99%hard work + 1% of luck

although, knowing how to write copy, how to find a hot niche and use software to make life easier are talked a lot on internet now. but to these three point, you really need to know:

    1. you do NOT need to know how to write the prefect copy, in your sales letter, the main three point you should consider is: show your passion + be honest + promise to serve your customer better, plus with some free education you can find out there for a great sales copy.

    2. a hot niche is mean something is hot selling, you can find the hotsale product on ebay, amazon for physical goods, (e.g. for cell phone accessories, better chose the iphone models), for ebooks and info products, look at kindle best seller and clickbank highest gravity product.

    3. as i said software is there to make your life easier, just like people saying about should i outsource of DIY, for me if you already is an expert of one task, then you should either let the software do the job or outsource that task.

As well as the skills of writing / presenting sizzling copy, there are of course the necessary personal attributes of self confidence and determination.

Maintaining sustained and focused action especially when you're starting out takes real belief in yourself, especially when it's likely that your family, friends and colleagues probably won't be on your wavelength at first and may even be critical of you.

Hold fast and don't give up, even if you fail at first (always make sure you understand why you failed - it's the fastest way to success).

As my favorite saying goes, "If you want something you've never had, go do something you've never done".

    Skill? Persistence, without a doubt.

Here we go, raise your hand if this is you:
    - Nobody is reading your content
    - You make a sale per month (or haven't made a sale)
    - Your social media profiles just don't grow
    - You only got a few sign ups for your list
    - Product creation seems harder than college
    - Always have too many things to do and get overwhelmed with work
    - No Google love (but man I built backlinks, what the heck...)
    - Not making profit from ads (why u don't buy?!?!)

And you can't tell anybody about this.

    Why continue them?
    Persistence.

    Tool? An auto responder.

Nothing beats the ability to create an email and automatically send it to a list of subscribers. If done correctly you can expect sales from your list every product you launch. Plus it's like a snowball, it will keep growing and growing and growing (even if some people unsubscribe along the way, which is normal...).

Different people will give you different answers.

I've made over 6 figures selling online and I can tell you what skills went towards that.

    - Simple Photoshop Design. I'm not referring to making amazing 3D models and airbrushes of images but knowing how to do simple modifications like increasing contrast, resizing, reshaping, adding/changing color, good text, etc will go a long way in designing ads/banners, etc.

    - Copy Writing. I avoided this one for ages but even simple techniques can go a long way. Like 1-2 sentances/line. Going straight to the point. Catchy Headers/Subheaders, etc.

    - Paid Marketing I'm an impatient guy. I'm not going to rely on SEO to get me traffic. I've spent a lot of money on FaceBook and Google learning how to get the right traffic at the right price. If you can learn this, you'll be able to test ideas daily instead of working on something for 3 months and realizing no ones interested.

    Hope that helps

Internet marketing has many aspects attached to it as it is a generic term used with many online business models coming under it. So there cannot be any specific single skill that can be termed as the most important skill.

Yes, there can be some of the most important skills if you want to sort them out as most important anyhow. You already have mentioned couple of them like copy writing and finding a good market/niche.

Ultimately, you either have to sell your own product or service or someone else's product or service. In either case, copy writing skill is a vital one.

However, it is equally important to possess some of the most important traits of an online marketer as well apart from having the skills, in order to succeed.

I am fairly new to Internet Marketing but here are my thoughts...

Literally, skill = the ability to do something that comes from training, experience, or practice. From what I have learned thus far is that education is paramount. With an education one has the ability to effectively evaluate what should and actually does work. From that point it is all repetition and consistent action.

If you ask me, the most important internet marketing skill is mastering how to create and drive traffic. That's what an online business is all about...traffic. An online business' success or failure depends on how much traffic it gets daily.

One very important trait is the drive to constantly learn. The internet is never the same. It changes on a daily basis and you should go with the flow meaning that you should never be hesitant to invest in yourself in order to learn new skills and master the ones you already know. Never act or think like you know it all because no one ever does.

If you have a good guide/course on affiliate marketing, just try to follow the course DO NOT OVERTHINK of the consequences, of whether you are doing things right, etc. It is okay to make mistakes. These mistakes are considered part of the learning process.

In my humble opinion is to stay honest to yourself and your followers in a meaning that you deliver quality content and stick to your promises. Nothing is more valuable than being trustworthy and reliable. In this area there are a lot of marketers bringing low quality, rehashed content only to get few people signed up so they can later promote another offers without building relationship with them.
Get to know your followers, share quality and later you will definitely see results of everything you invested so far. It's a road less traveled but in long distance totally worth it

Be congruent to yourself and always LEARN
