My marketing product pet peeves

Here's a few of my IM related pet peeves...I'm sure I can come up with a few more.

Zipped files inside of zipped files - Have you ever unzipped a product only to find more zip files, unzipped them only to find even more zipped files? There's no need for this. Zipping a zipped file doesn't make it a smaller download. It only makes it more of a hassle. If you sell a product for download, do your customers a favor and unzip all the sub folders and only have one zipped file.

Using a big black logo image in your PDF. PDF is a format that's really intended for printing. By having a big black logo in your PDF, you're draining the ink from your customer's printers if they want to print it out. Same thing with page footers that are on every page in your report. Make these smaller and use a light gray background instead of black and save your customers a lot of black ink.

Non edited videos - If you have to cough during your video, have the courtesy to edit it out. I really don't need to hear you hacking a loogie on your lapel mic. Can you please open all the browser windows and folders on your computer before you start recording? It's OK to set things up and maybe even rehearse a bit before you start the recording to save your viewers some of their time. Also, turn off your Skype. Do we really need to hear every time your Skype has a new message?

Agree? Disagree? Have any of your own to add?

Having blinking things going on in the background like the low power icon blinking while the recording is going on.

Sales letters that are longer and more complete than the products.

Introductions and title pages that are just for filler. How much introduction do you need for a 4 page (content) report?

Formatting page sizes so it's like 5.5x 8.5 for no other purpose but to increase page count. Printing out some of these types is a pain.

Giving a PDF but no source document on supposed PLR content.

My #1 peeve will always be this:

Creating an information product that contains hours of video when it could have been condensed to a 20 page PDF.

I just ran into a pet peeve.

An ad on the WF says "free report" - I was curious and willnig to give my emails address....and CONFIRM....all to get this "free report".

After confirming I'm taken to a page when I'm informed of a 7-day 'course' - encourage to buy an 'ebook'....and see NO OPTION to download a free report.

A couple hours later - no emails - no link to download....will unsubscribe AS SOON AS I HEAR FROM THIS MARKETER.

I doubt this is deliberate or meant to be misleading but if you are going to "create a funnel" - make sure it works!

    Good points there man!

    Let me add ....

Recently I came across a "free" plugin for WordPress in the WSO marketplace ... I downloaded the plugin, and then while I'm reading the files, I find out it is not really free, and that you need to get a service from a website first, in order to activate the plugin! ..

I wish there was something about this on the sales page! .. thanks!! lol

I guess incomplete information is a way to capture leads, but that will result in very low conversion rates! .. right right!

LOL this one really gets me.

Hearing people burp and cough and watching them make mistakes and then back tracking... like they never heard of Camtasia (or something cheaper even).

When did quality standards drop that low?

  • I have to agree with the one about having hours of endless video with no PDF.

Should have both for different learning styles. Also having both allows the user to pick and choose which videos he wants to watch for more help. Make it user friendly!

Here's another...when folks tell us what to do, but not how to do it. It's easy to say "you need more traffic". However, what is really needed is telling someone HOW to get more traffic.

That's a good one and you see it constantly here in this section. Where the "tell not show" advice giver will say it's easy all you have to do is ...
      • Get traffic, build a list, convert them and you'll succeed. O...kay!
      - Or -.

It's simple, just get a product that everyone wants and the money will roll in.

Or "If you do X and Y you'll get Z.

And other similar cliches too many to mention.

They never tell you how, which makes you wonder if they achieved success with it themselves or are they just giving you pass-along information.

After giving the vague advice,I've even seen people have the nerve to say' Wow, I can't believe I'm giving away all these secrets. Yea, my either.

Here's another...You're reading a report you bought and the creator tells you to do a search for a particular tool you need.

Don't tell people to "do a search". Do the search yourself and provide a direct link in the report for your customers to use. Stop being so lazy. As the product creator it's your responsibility to make things as easy and convenient for your customers.

And from a logical point of view, why should multiple people spend the time and effort when a single person's effort is all it really takes?
