Quite some time ago, I've published some materials for a 3D graphics software with a video tutorial - for free. I've noticed that over the time, it got quite a lot of traffic (without me even trying) and I was looking for ways to monetize the download link.

I've created a simple google site for the content and included a paypal button to process the payment before the download appears. I got a couple of successful transactions and then paypal banned it. I tried to email them and find out what's wrong but never got a response. Reading through their faq and rules didn't help me either.
I don't like paypal too much..

Anyway, is someone here using Paypal to monetize their digital downloads ?
What's wrong with my example use above ?
Is there a different way to approach this situation conveniently ?

I know there are some Wordpress plugins, but it would be simply an overshoot to create a whole site just for 1 download.

Thanks for help

That is odd. Did you get an email or anything from them stating why they've banned it?

  • That is really odd. I would try calling PayPal. I have had to talk to their customer service a couple of times and they were extremely helpful and nice. They are quite possibly the only customer service department where I would rather talk to someone then go through an automated system.

Everyone always says, "I tried to contact them and they do not respond" I have never had an instance where I could not get an answer from paypal. And, nobody here can give you an answer because you did not give us any information to go on. provide a copy of the email you received from them.

But first, log into your paypal account and find the word "Contact" click that and you will be take to their contact page, opt to call them. They will give you a pin number. Pick up the phone and call them, they will answer within a few minutes.

I agree. Sounds like you didn't try hard enough or at all even to get a hold of someone at paypal. This all sounds fishy to me.

You should call to the Paypal. I am sure you will get the exact answer from them. It is the first solution for you. The Paypal may send an email about the Banned, you should check it. Thanks

      ok, thanks for suggestions.

      Here's the email:
We emailed you a little while ago to ask for your help resolving an issue
with your PayPal account. Your account is still temporarily limited because
      we haven't heard from you.

We understand it may be frustrating not to have full access to your PayPal
account. We want to work with you to get your account back to normal as
      quickly as possible.

      What's the problem?

We have recently reviewed your account and have noticed that you.re selling
items on your website that violate our Acceptable Use Policy. We value your
custom and ask that you remove all items from your website that violate
      this policy.

Please note that subsequent violations will result in us closing your
      account.

      Reference Number: PP-003-722-745-742

      How you can help

It's usually quite straight forward to take care of these things. Most of
the time, we just need some more information about your account or latest
      transactions.

To help us with this and to see what you can and can't do with your account
until the issue is resolved, log in to your account and go to the
      Resolution Centre.

      Yours sincerely,
      PayPal
however, I am unable to resolve it via the resolution centre.

I would call them of course, but I am not in the UK and the charges would be pretty high as the call would take ages I can imagine.

Isn't there an alternative to Paypal ? Direct card payment for example.

Yes, of course, there are lots of alternatives to PayPal.

Unless, there's something you're not telling us, this sentence from PayPal's email says it all . . .

"We have recently reviewed your account and have noticed that you're selling items on your website that violate our Acceptable Use Policy."

Doesn't that sentence tell you what you're doing wrong?

well, that's very abstract. I was reading through the policy and didn't find anything related.

I really like using Easy Digital Downloads - it's a free WP plugin that allows you to sell digital stuff from your WP site. It integrates with various types of payment processors. You might want to look into that.

Paypal just shut my company down by refusing to continue to process my transactions. I own an on-line tech support company where I handle the customer service in Canada & outsource the tech support to highly trained computer geeks in India. Paypal gave me the BS reason that they had reason to believe that I was a strawman/frontman for mutiple tech support companies in India which is totally false. I have only 1 contract with 1 tech support company in India. On top of that Paypal was holding 13% of every transaction in a reserve & had built up over $12,000 USD in the reserve account. On top of that they refuse to release the monies earned ($2,500) the last week I was using Paypal as my payment processor. So in total they are holding $14,500 USD & they said they are going to hold it for 6 months. This is total BS because after 6 months, it is impossible for a customer to file a chargeback. For example Paypal was supposed to release $2,400 this month of August from the reserve for transactions my company concluded the month of February, 6 months ago.
There are thousands of complaints registered against paypal on various forums such as Ripoff & complaintsboard.
Plus I found out there was a class action lawsuit against paypal in 2011 ..
      Read this > http://www.screw-paypal.dot com
      PayPal User Agreement: HIGHLIGHTS >

Does anybody have any suggestions or advice on how I can get my money that paypal is holding? Someone suggested that I file a complaint at the better business bureau in California where Paypal's head office is located..
This is a total nightmare for me as I am in debt $14,000 & for paypal to do this to me has totally demoralized me. I am very depressed! I need to find another credit card / gateway processor that is legit & that will accept my business model & business which is totally honest & above board. We are strictly an inbound company & never charge our customers before the work/repair is completed & the customer is 100% satisfied. On top of that we take an order form & a feedback form for every customer transaction. Does anybody have any good advice or good suggestions?
