Overcoming Information Overload/Shiney Objects

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you could help me. I'm still in the process of starting out, however, I notice that I could very easily fall into the information overload and shiney objects traps.

I wondering if any of you could share some tips with me please

There is amazing free content available on this forum.

Search for what you are interested in, like internet marketing, affiliate marketing, blogging, CPA and anything that you wish to learn.

Bookmark those pages and read them, understand them and make notes. Do this for the next one month and then get a laser like focus to move on to implement.

And one piece of advice I would give you before you buy any WSO out there is, become a War Room member first. Explore that section because you get most of the earlier crazily sold WSOs for FREE.

Learn and contribute. Hope this helps.

Your problem is very normal. People do have shiny object syndrome. They do join / buy every new offer out there. In the process they waste a lot of money but more importantly they waste a lot of energy and time which builds frustration in the absence of any result.

This happens when people are not able to decide what course of action to follow. Once they decide what kind of business to build they will stick to it.

So to do that they need to first decide their goals. What are their Long, medium and short term goals. How much money they want to earn in what period. What kind of things they want to buy till what month of the year. etc.

Once that is decided they should find the course of action that can take them to their goals. By course of action I mean affiliate marketing, building a website, MLM, creating own product etc.

Once that is decided they should stick to it and build their business at least to a satisfactory stage before thinking of trying hands on another.

They need to have a strong will because there is a struggling period in any business and its during that period that people start looking for something else. Jumping from one thing to another takes a person nowhere but wastes time. Some people realise this fact through personal experience before heading on the right direction.

    Hope that helps

The fact that you're even asking about this stuff is pretty important to begin with. That being said, the only advice I'll give you....take action. If you're literally just starting, what does that mean? Are you looking for a niche right now? Do you have a site up and running? Have you started writing on a daily basis? Do you have a basic structure in place to allow yourself to attract links (ie does your site look and feel like a trustworthy site?).

After that, test everything you read. Take your time and try the two or three things you read here that make sense to you, but always be ready to adjust based on new data-

One thing I had to do years ago to avoid "shiny object syndrome" is stay away from the Warrior Special Offers section. I'm sure you have plenty of WSO's that you've purchased. Pick a plan that you believe will work long term and stick with it.

Nowadays the only time that I usually check out the WSO section is if I'm looking for something that relates to the business that I already have.

          Good luck...

Hi Newbie 70, thank you for posting your question, as you got some really awesome replies that are a great help to other newbies like me. Yes, as someone pointed out, The Warrior Forum is the ideal place to come when you're starting out, as there is always plenty of great, helpful, no BS advice given freely by experienced marketers.
If I may, I'd like to suggest you find a mentor. I struggled on my own for far too long, and spent far too much money on shiny objects that didn't work (at least not for me, because, maybe, I didn't try hard enough) until, finally, I realized I wasn't going to get anywhere without a mentor --- someone to tell me what to do, and show me how to do it. There are lots of stories circulating about mentoring and coaching being very expensive. If these stories are true, I consider myself very fortunate, indeed. My mentor charged me very little and I'm now making progress at long last. It would be unethical for me to post details here, but feel free to PM me for more information.
    Keep smiling!

I think you need to implement what Buddhist call "Mindful Awareness".

In other wards be conscious of everything that is going on in your Mind....what you are thinking, how you are thinking etc..etc..

And when you observe yourself yearning to keep looking for new and exciting stuff to pursue immediately stop what you are doing.

And halt any further rumination you do towards looking at the new and exciting opportunity.

It is a trap. Find that proven Model and stick with it. And dont let your Mind wander to that shiny object

Here's what I've done over the years...

    Turn everything off.

Get a paper, and a pencil.

Write down precisely what you aim to accomplish.

Forget all the shiny stuff... We're talking about YOU and what you want to accomplish.

This is your "business plan" so to speak.

Who are your end users, what will you provide as a service/product, and how will you reach them?

    Start with that.

    A paper and pencil.

    Everything else, is just noise.

I have a quote on my desktop that says, "All the so called 'Secret To Success' wont work until you do".

What you said is pretty much it, just a matter of figuring out what he wants to do which I gave him a hot clue. Shrugs.

      I'm out...

Very simple. pick a small project to start, and get started doing it and finish it. If you get stuck in between, google it, and or look on the warrior forum for answer.. It might be, starting your first website. It might be creating an ebook. Just get it done, even if it sucks mule. As you finish you will figure out, what you need to look for to refine what you are doing. But, until you have done something, you just won't know.

This has got to be one of the 10 most discussed topics on this forum. The biggest caution about getting so much different information? You'll have the same problem trying to decide which advice is best and still end up trying a bunch of different things.

Information overload happens when you try to process more than you can digest. The best way to avoid it is take baby steps, take time to learn the smaller steps before rushing to the bigger steps.

Shiny Object syndrome happens when you're
not familiar enough with the project (lack of research/due-diligence) or
your passion and join programs/plans that don't make money or match your passion.

The truth of the matter is Shiny Object syndrome is something every one fights. New or Veteran. Although most will try to give you the impression they always make the "perfect" decision about a program, product or venture and they stick with it no matter what (eye-roll).

Not even Fortune 500 companies can say that. They test something it doesn't work ... they move on to the next thing. T.V ,and Radio stations, cancel shows all the time and move on to the next thing. The best you can do is try to control it ... much like alcoholism.

The thing you have to know is where you cross the line between research/testing what works for you and shiny object syndrome (it's a thin line).

The WSO's and shiney objects, well we have all been there, buying those, and expecting to push a button and have all this money come in.

LOL. I laugh at that. I mean, if it was that easy, everyone would quit their jobs.

If you stop buying up every WSO and every shiney new object, that will bring you in a little money and just concentrate on making a real business, with a real list of prospects, and focus on 1 thing each day. In 1 month you could have a business bringing in $1000 a month, then just continue to do this, build more of your list, and double profits to $2000 a month.

Basically that is all i did, and have a five figure a month business. Not showing off! just telling people what works, and how it works.

BUILD A BUSINESS< do not invest in a crappy money spinner!!! That is not how millionaires are born.

yes! It takes hard work, but where do you want to be in 1 year from now, still buying WSO's and shiney chit, that you whinge about to your friends, and family. NO!!! Stop it!!

Did you not know that getting say 10 leads a day for any sort of business could change your life. yes just 10 and how long, even with FREE traffic would it take for you to get 10 leads a day. HARDLY ANY TIME AT ALL.

I cannot believe I just gave these secrets away!!!, But I have no hassle in doing so, because I would say 0.5% of people reading this, will actually do this, and get off their lazy ass and TAKE ACTION!!!

So do not be one of them.....

Forgive me if I missed it. But you didn't give us any secrets did you? You just asked "if we knew getting 10 leads a day for any business could change our life?"
It would serve us well if you told us how "you" did it. - Thanks.

My best advice for you and any newbie is the following:

        1 - Email List
Focus on building a list in your first niche choice.
This will then force you to:
        a - Set up and auto-responder
b - Learn to get targeted traffic to a landing page * BIG SKILL!
c - Monetize your email series ( Affiliate sales, CPA, Amazon, etc.)
d - Build it well as to have a few hundred to over a thousand emails or more.

Keep building lists in new niches (to you) - although "new niches" is a great strategy.

Once you developed good traffic to a landing page and built a list.

        2 - Go into Website-based marketing.
You now do the same to drive traffic as you perfected previously for your email lists. You already have a list in the niche that you can send emails to letting them know about your new site and get the ball rolling with social sharing and all that.

The focus on this 2nd level is to convert sales from your site.
Keep building niche websites based on your previous email list niches - already have traffic built in!

3 - Now you'll be ready to create your own product and build a website and email list around that. You can also opt to use PLR and customize it to make it unique.

Keep creating products in niches you already built email lists in and use that base to expand your market reach.

This 3rd level will inevitably ease you into the fourth level:

        4 - Platform & Asset Building
Repeat, Rinse, Repeat to your hearts content - at this point it should be a hobby for you as you travel the world virtually "retired".

No shiney objects along the way. Just pure and simple learning and application.
And you'll note that most of the complaints people have on this forum is precisely due to the fact that they did not follow the steps I suggested above "how do you get traffic to my website?!...".

I see the shiny object syndrome manifest with lots of people. One of the reasons for it is a lack of confidence which is understandable. When you don't have total belief it's very easy to veer off track and get tempted by a myriad of offers that seem to be more enticing than the current project.

A couple of techniques I employed in the early stages of my online career helped me a lot:

    1. Every day I would plug into some CONGRUENT training, either live or a recording. This helped to energise and motivate me and also helped to dispel my self doubt.

    2. I would talk to my mentor regularly. She also made a big contribution to my early success - she kept me focused and energised.

    3. I kept thinking about my 'why' - the reasons why I made the decision to become an online marketer (more family time, more travel etc). This also helped to reduce my anxiety in the crucial first few weeks.

These techniques enabled me to weather the self doubt storm, and finally prevail and prosper. Hope this helps.

    Find your passion.

You know yourself better than anyone, so
think about what ou do naturally that brings
you pleasure and see if what you love to do
    has a market for it.

    If so, start there.

Avoid getting into an industry where you have
no drive nor desire other than you heard it
makes you a lot of money. It's unsustainable.

You'll burn out quicker, hate it faster and regret
    doing it later.

Many highly successful, corporate salespeople and managers might beg to differ.

Some do find Passion with the daily activity of running a business/helping run a business, and not so much with the actual Product or Industry

      Just an observation
