Intro and a Noob question

Hi everyone, I've just joined having been researching ways of creating a revenue stream from online marketing and associated means.

My background is as a freelance coder (html5, css3, Javascript etc) which I've been doing since 2000. Lately I've been seeing me working vastly more, for vastly less (it's just me in a one-man band) and thus unable to take on extra work.

So basically, I've decided to use my dev skills in other ways than just blocking out my time working for clients and this search led me the Warrior Forum... I have a simple question: how can I get best - and quickest - up to speed on the skills/knowledge needed to onetime websites. Basically I know zero about this. Nada.

I'm not asking for formulas to make money, people's ideas or magic ways to do it. I just want to know where to start to learn what's needed so I can take it from there and start the grunt-work! So if anyone knows some resources: best book, site, noob tutorials... they'd be much appreciated!

Why not start right here at the Warrior Forum?

Observe what's going on, see what kinds of marketing business models appeal to you and your skills, participate by sharing and asking questions, and probably most importantly . . . use the search function to find threads and posts that will answer the questions you have.

Everything you need is right here . . . really . . . you just have to see what fits your situation, ask questions, study, then implement. The hard part, I believe, is not paying attention to the hype and choosing sound principles over exaggeration. Much of what is here is B.S. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to figure out what is real and what is fluff. Good luck.

thanks for the reply! Yes, I was going to do that but a lot of the concepts/jargon I don't know what that are (what's a content locker for example) and I don't want to keep asking stupid questions but yes, I will wade through. Is there any intro place to start? Or just dive in? Cheers

If you know nothing, then you should be learning the terminology. So, you can speak our language. Google should be used extensively. You don't have to ask everyone of your questions here to get your basic information. In fact, you'll learn the basics faster by Googling your questions.

Ask here when you need clarification, examples or opinions. That's the fastest way to learn. Free.

Given the fact that you already do freelance work, I'd suggest that you look into something that allows you to generate residual income. In the online world, this is done by the use of the search engines, which means learning about business models like niche blogging (most common, review-site and affiliate marketing model -- think like a tech blog), having a private label rights content store and such. Heck, you might even decide to start a tech Youtube channel and become a YT partner.

    Good luck,
    Joey

You might wanna try out "WORDPRESS PLUGINS" as an entry point. That will be a good starting point of research.

    Hi fulcanelli,

If I were you, I would make use of your current skill-set/interests. Here's what I would do...

    1. Create a signature here with a link to page that displays your best work examples.
With a tag line similar to this - "Struggling with web design? I can help. Click here and see how I make websites beautiful"
(I would highly recommend using a capture page here, to build an email list)

    2. Keep an eye on the forums here and offer free advice/help to anyone asking technical questions about website coding, html, or anything you have knowledge in.

    3. Check out other marketer's sites and look for ways to improve or make them more visually appealing. Then contact them offering a free consultation or just suggest improvements you could make.

    4. Email any leads you get through your page as much as possible (at least 2-3 times a week). Deliver a ton of value (web design tips, free tools, etc). Then occasionally (maybe once a week) offer your list a special offer. This could be a website from you, a payed tool you created, or even a new WordPress plug-in/affiliate product you find especially useful and could make a profit on.

    5. Repeat steps 2-5.

    Hope that helps.

Would be great if you could expand on what you know how to do in terms of coding and what you like and don't. There are two ways for this:

    1. Stick with what you know
    2. Learn something new

In 1 you would basically transport your business online and continue what you do for online clients. You can get started in freelancer or UpWork for example and also lots of work here on the forum (search the for hire section). Make sure that you can deliver work fast and for a lot of money (I consider time in my ROI).

If you want to follow 2 then you might dig deeper into some concepts such as affiliate marketing and traffic generation. This has a longer learning curve and might take a while to actually make a sale, but knowledge is invaluable. Start by searching threads on a specific subject here on the forum and look for a high number of replies (or starts). Make sure you get to the War Room as well,if you can. When in doubt, google it. Learn the terms and jargon. Also watch a lot of YouTube videos, that helps me a lot (I like to visualize).

If I were you I would do a hybrid combination: do 1 so you can do 2. You will have to work but also have some time to learn new things. You will be getting paid to learn. How awesome is that? (that's the opposite of college btw, where you pay to learn, ah!)

I do this as a writer: I have a steady volume of writing work (copy, ebooks, articles, etc.) and then learn the rest whenever I have free time. It takes a little bit more time but eventually you'll learn the subtle art of time management on your own.

I would love to hear more!

    Cheers
    Dan

As a coder you have a HUGE one up. If I was you I'd look around the forum and see what kind of software people are asking for and create it.

I know that I would personally like to see more Wordpress themes designed specifically for membership sites. OP2 is the standard but in all honesty it's a pain in the rear end to setup (the theme and page setup, not the member plugin it comes with).

A membership theme with drag/drop building like Thrive Content Builder offers would be amazing and probably set you up financially for years to come.

You are asking dangerous questions, my man. I've seen these question lead many a man (and a few ladies) to powerful wealth.

Basically you need 2 things to make money online:
    Traffic
    Conversions

Selling your existing skills on here or on marketplaces like fiverr and the new market.source-wave are a great place to start.

The next level might be to places like odesk. Make sure each proposal "paints a picture" for your client of how you will make their lives better... not just a listing of your resume

SEO is an excellent traffic source that takes time. Paid traffic also works well but has a little larger learning curve in my opinion. Digital Marketer has good training on Paid traffic. Source-wave and Diggity Marketing have good discussions on SEO (In my aff-marketing course I teach my students to use SEO to get traffic)

But yeah, that's it. You have the service to sell so just focus on getting more targeted (ideal) "traffic" to your offer.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice, it's given me some ideas and a good place to start.

I should say that I'm really not interested so much in growing or promoting my dev business - it's not really scalable and I've hit a wall with it in as much as for the last couple of years I've had enough work to keep me busy 12 hours a day. So I've had to refuse work and really, this basically caps my income - I can't really put up my rates (not enough anyway) and I can't take on any more work.

So, thinking out of the box, my plan is to scale back the dev work and actually work on sites for myself: building say 1 or 2 sites which I will learn to monetise and grow-up. When I'm up to speed with this I'll just replicate with more sites... that's the plan anyway!

I guess I need to find a niche, familiarise myself with SEO and the methods of monetising like affiliates, advertising and/or other things that are more effective I don't know about yet.

Is there any book or PDF on this sort of angle anyone would recommend?

        Fulcanelli,

Have you ever started building an email/subscriber list? Honestly, that's where the real money is.

A loyal list is worth its weight in gold. I was just suggesting you leverage your current talent/expertise to build your list. After you build a relationship with your list, you could sell them (high quality) affiliate products related to website creation. Just don't send them crap offers.

Heck, over time, you could even make your own video course with some "How To's" of web design.

It's always easier to start out in a niche you know and enjoy. So just keep that in mind.
