Getting press coverage for your projects.

Hey Warriors!

Working on a new blog post about getting media coverage for your websites. I'm interviewing a few industry experts and magazine editors about what is worth covering and what isn't considered newsworthy by them.

Wanted to see if the WF community had any recommendations based on your experience in getting local (or national) media coverage for your projects. If so, what tools do you use to get your pitches to journalists and how has your experience been?

To start things off, my success in that realm has largely been a result of 1) meeting writers and editors in a social setting and mentioning what I'm working on, 2) being positioned as an expert in a given field and then going above and beyond to quickly assist any of them who reach out for help in a piece that they are working on.

Looking forward to hearing from others!

- Jack

One of the surest ways to get media coverage is to include a celebrity or high-profile figure with picture within your article or project. As you should know, the press flocks to familiar public faces. Just by association, you are going to get coverage even if the celebrity is not really endorsing your project.

Completely agree. An easily obtainable version of that for many web sites is working towards an "authority belt" of known brands and clients. Solid example of this is how StartupVitamins.com has their "as seen in the offices" graphic on the front page of their site. I'm assuming they mailed their posters out for free to major companies, but now suddenly they can claim "As seen in the offices of Google, Apple, Facebook, Zappos."

That's great for customers...and any members of the press vetting their site's credibility.

Articles don't necessarily need to be "newsworthy" to get press coverage. Editors and journalists in general are constantly seeking content of interest to their reading audiences. In my experience, one of the best attributes for getting the attention of the media is establishing yourself as an "authority" figure in a niche for which you are appropriately competent. Journalists may then approach you for interviews or appearances.
