For SEO purposes and branding do you always go for .com domain and if you cannot find the domain then you look for an alternate .com domain rather than .net .org ones?

I usually go with a .com domain name.

However, if my exact keyword is available in .net but not .com I might get that.

    I never get .org

.com is what everyone assumes the extension to be

When doing SEO, I'd rather have an exact keyword match .net than a close but not exact .com

I read in some article once that people have a tendency or mindset to enter.com after a domain so If you have blabla.org then some smart guy will start blabla.com and you'll lose potential customers to him.

For SEO purposes It depends on the nature of your website whether to use .org or .com. .org is more for authoritative content.

I always go with a .com. Simply easier to remember. With domain names being under $9-10, why not go with something people will remember more?

I don't think it really matters too much as far as SEO goes. I have a .net domain that has done very well in the search engines.

That being said, I have very few non .com names where I don't also own the .com.

It partly depends on your goals and purpose of the site. If it's just a sales page or maybe a "made for AdSense" type site, I don't think it really matters. Most people will find the site through links anyway.

But, if you're trying to build a brand or an authority site, go with a .com. That's what people will think of. I mean, you could advertise "visit ABCcompany.net" and you'll still get people going to "ABCcompany.com" or even "ABCcompanynet.com" instead of the actual domain.

Imagine, for example, if Twitter was Twitter.net instead of Twitter.com. Someone could be selling bird feeders on twitter.com right now and getting a lot of traffic.

For myself, I still try to stick with .com no matter what. I don't remember the last time I registered a non .com domain name. You can still find good .com names; you just might need to look a little harder.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I usually go for a .com. If I know the site is going to be promoted mostly online and I can get a more keyword rich name I will go with the .net.

I haven't owned anything but .com's -but that is just me.

In my oh so humble opinion .com's seem more "legit" and easier to remember.

A secondary reason I have all .com's is in case I want to sell some of the sites down the road. All things being equal I think .com's have a higher resale value compared to .info .net etc.

      Just my 2 cents...

This is very true, great answer to this question.

You definitely deserve a "Thanks" for that.

        Have a great day

          Absolutely!!

I will always buy the .com extension first, if it is available. Then I might buy the .net extension if I think it will be a popular website.

Most people unconsciously always add the .com to the end of the url anyway.

.org and .net domains don't necessarily mean they'll do worse than .coms. It all depends on the situation, site content etc. Every situation is unique.

For SEO purposes, it makes no difference. However, if the .com is an older active domain with a lot of aged authority links it will be difficult to beat with your brand new .net or .org.

For Branding purposes, the .com will be better unless you have a reason to use a .org or .net instead, such as using a .org for a charity or professional organization or .net for something technical. If you do buy the .net/.org and the .com is available, it's a good idea to go ahead and buy it to protect your brand.

I always try to go for .com as well. If it is absolutely necessary, you can do the .net domain or even country (if your business can only use local traffic). I wouldn't say that having a .net domain name prevents you from getting high rankings, but from a marketing point of view, it is always better with .com.
