I want to start a tech blog, I know its very competitive. I like it because I have a Great 10yr old tech name and I can easily pivot if something goes wrong. I'm looking at Long term business and not quick money. I know I'll make about $0 the first 12 months and then probably $100/month after that which will grow slowly and I'm cool with that.

I don't know what business model to go with, which idea you like best?

1. TechCrunch model: Go around the Dallas Area and interview local startups. They will probably write free articles in exchange for more exposure to themselves and their startups; a great way to get Authority and get the big players noticing my blog. Heck they may BUY an ad to acompany their article for more exposure. After it grows expand to writing about startups in Austin Tx and beyond to other major cities. Eventually have a podcast with advertisers.

2. Udemy model: Skip the blog and just make tutorials on a topic. A good friend of mine is a crazy-smart SQL & C++ guru. So we could do SQL/C++ Tutorials.on video, post them on YouTube with links back to the blog. Give basic information our free and charge to access the advanced tutorials.

3. Engadget model: Just general tech blog. Do gadget reviews on whatever's popular. Write 100 articles then contact gadget companies to send me a sample product and review those.
Go to tech companies and offer advertising on my small blog.

Any thought on what is best?

Since I'm a TechCrunch reader I would recommend that one, but in the end you have to make the decission what you want to write about (and do) on a daily basis.

If you want a website that 'PUBLISHES ITSELF' with minimal effort on your part in terms of CONTENT CREATION and TRAFFIC GENERATION, I'd go with Interviews.

    I'd go with option 1

Keep in mind that the more targeted your focus is the more success you'll have

Also, if you pick the right sub-niche, it can get quite lucrative.

As far as "what's best", we can't tell you that. It would be the same as me telling you if you liked apples, oranges or peaches more. There is absolutely no way for someone that doesn't know you to answer that question.

So I think what you meant to ask is, "Which has the most potential?"

Each of the three ideas has merits and drawbacks. Each requires serious effort on your part, while one requires outside help as well. But then again, can you get those interviews you were talking about? Can your friend definitely commit long-term? By process of elimination, you may only have option 3 anyway.

Which brings me to the real point- why do you have to define how you'll attack the niche right now anyway? Every site starts with solid blog content and from there, your readers should be the ones helping you determine what comes next. For example, if you wrote a review about the iPhone 7 and it got 17k clicks, 400 new subscribers and 900 comments.....but a podcast interview got 9k clicks, 12 new subscribers and 3 comments....would that change the next piece of content you produced for the site? It definitely should if you really want to compete in the tech space.

So my advice would be to incorporate a little bit of all three ideas and see how your readers/listeners respond. That's the only way to know for sure.

Why not start your own model? which makes your tech blog unique from others. This will be a great start.
