Hi everybody,

If you'd lost your job and you needed to build a full time income online in 12 months, which new skill would you choose to study ?

Wordpress, Photoshop, Marketing, Web Design, Writing ??????

I have a blog that is just starting to make about $200 a month so need a new skill to help me earn some more !!

Look forward to your replies

You've already mentioned the top skills that are highly in-demand in today's market - Wordpress, Photoshop, Internet Marketing, Web Design, Writing.... and your highly visited blog is a perfect start. If you can master Wordpress/Web Design, you're very unlikely to run out of work whether for yourself or for somebody else. Since you have 12 months to do it, it's best to invest everything in building a profitable online business, freelancing is always there as backup.

Writing has been the most stable way for me to make money online. It's made me $2,000 a month for a while. I'm starting to branch out because I want to be a six figure earner online, but I would say entry level internet money making is writing. It will introduce you to SEO, marketing and all the other aspects. I earned while I learned. I still have a lot to learn, but the fundamental framework to online moneymaking was through writing.

Keep in mind: writing online is not easy. It's tedious, clients are very picky a lot of the time, and the work isn't always stable. That said, it's close to an honest living, not the sort of magical money system that I used to think online money making was. I make $50 an hour when I'm inspired and $5 an hour when I'm not.

More than one skill will be required and it depends on your passions, your experience, your knowledge, your skills, and of course the amount of start-up capital you have to invest.

With the information I see in your OP - a blog generating $200/ month - I'd have to suggest blogging. You're ahead of the curve for IM newcomers.

    Consider these for now:

    1. Free traffic generation to the blog.
    2. Effective monetization.
    3. List-building.

If I were in your shoes, I'd likely start out by assessing the current setup and seeing if I can squeeze more than $200/ month out of it.

I might then learn everything I can about free traffic generation, but I'd learn one traffic model at a time, integrating at some stage a list, likely with a sales funnel monetized with free (if possible) and obviously targeted CPA offers.

    Cheers - Tom

It looks like you have a unique blog to say the least and you should probably just keep adding more content to it. It looks like it is working out for you already and there are so many different adult products that you could sell with it as well

        John,

How can random people on a public forum know what skills you should develop when they don't know what your goals are, they don't know what experience or past training you have, they don't know your education, your likes and dislikes, or the resources you have available to pursue your new skill?

Isn't that a decision you need to make without the influence of random outsiders that know nothing about you?

Successful entrepreneurs always have a clear goal in mind and are focused on a destination, not the skills that will get them there. The business owner can always find people who will make up for his deficiencies.

We're talking about your future - don't you want to set your own agenda?

You can survey the field, look into alternative business models and careers, without asking others how they would do it. This is your show.

I would say that if you are making $200/month with your blog, you should be figuring out what you're doing right and do more of it, build on it, and duplicate it -- whatever skills that requires.

If I had to select one skill to work on, it would be writing. Technical skills are important but if you can't write, the technical skills don't mean much. There has to a balance. Success means having a good combination of skills.

Traffic generation. It's relatively easy to create to find a product. But without traffic it's useless. And every website needs traffic so you could sell it as a service if you go that route.

To be fair, though, is an absolute like that ever true in business or marketing?

It always amazes me at the amount of people who give advice to people with this type of question without knowing or even asking for any background information suggested by Steve B (post #8).

I'd be nervous if I walked into a Doctors Office and told him I felt sick. Then he immediately started giving my medicine and suggesting surgery without knowing or even asking me any background information. Yet you see it here everyday. Yikes!

Very good, Already you have the blog & you are earning about $200 per month. You can earn more money from this sector, if you can more writing content, SEO & graphics design. SEO is too much important to increase site traffic & page rank.

What really amazed me here are the people who did not quite understand what really meant by the question above. The query involved everyone to a scenario where "what you gonna do if you lost your job... yes YOU!" The poster wasn't directly asking for somebody to help him out with his life but getting ideas from somebody should they be in that particular scenario. This is the reason why lots of advice and opinions sprang up to be welcomed and ultimately analyzed by the poster... Sometimes negativity or defensiveness comes first before the drive to push through LoL!
