Should I use .com or .info or does it matter?

I own two domain names. One is a .com that I've owned since 2010 and is partially built out. The other I've owned for one year and has not been built but is a .info. I think the .info name itself is a stronger name but I'm concerned that I will waste my time building it because it is a .info. They are in the same niche and this is NOT an IM or make money niche. It would be an authority blog / website.

I would appreciate any opinions, please.

    I think you'll find that in most instances, you'll want to use .com over any other choice. I'm no expert, but I've been told that Google just loves .com more so I guess I have to believe it.

    Google doesn't care - they have said that many times.

    The audience does though, and it will be some time before old habits change enough that non-.coms are viewed without bias.

    The day will come though, so if you are playing a long game it may be worth developing. But it may not be soon enough to matter.

      Hmmm. I am in this for the long term. I'm hoping to build a solid authority site. It's just that I like the .info name so much better. But the other one is not terrible and has a solid history so it's probably better to go with it.

        I can only concur with previous posts. I too are very much partial to .com and still find .info suspicious and consider it spam or at least a notch below a "real" site.

      He's 100% right...a lot of people look at .com as the authority and they're not going to visit anything else on purpose. But then again, if a .info site is ranked at #1 on Google, then the click-thru rate will be virtually the same as a .com.

      So your answer really depends on how much you plan on building out the site. I would personally go with the .info if-

      1) The .com, .net and .org are not very similar sites owned by someone else (buy any/all as they become available).
      2) The .info name is a LOT better than your .com. If they're similar, then just stick to the .com.
      3) You don't give out the web address a lot in the real world. For example, if I told you in person to visit me at BestSweaters.org, probably 80% of the people would type in .com out of habit. So if you're getting traffic from memory, go .com.

        Ok, thanks. I don't expect to be getting much traffic from meeting someone on the street. It will probably all be gained online. But I do hope to build a large site and make it into a real authority in the niche so I think the .com is better. I want to have as much cred as possible and I'm afraid the .info will scare people away and they won't trust my advice and then won't buy my products.

    Always go with .com.. If nothing else, if you develop the .info you will lose traffic to the .com if you ever become big (and that is the goal isn't it?). Com is better for brandability, has more authority and is just more well known.

    Only .com. I have a .net blog that I update daily and it dont get NO traffic at all. The .com sites I dont touch all get google love lol.

    As some users have already told you, stick with the .com but not because of Google buy because of people. People naturally thinks about .com than anything else. If both domains have the same name you may also redirect your .com to .info and nothing bad should happen.

    I don't know how the search engines feel (probably don't care cause people used to ask the same stuff about .net and .org domains), but personally, I'm partial to a .com. To me, it is just more professional and easier for people to remember. They've also been around so long that if you just tell someone the name of your site, they are going to assume it's a .com - if that makes sense. When I see a .info site, I think to myself, "Who in the hell gets a .info site?" If I paid attention to domain extensions and saw that, I'd think something is up.

    In about 99% of the courses I've taken, when it comes to choosing domain extensions, it's always .com first then .org or .net second.

    Use a .com. The .info extension has a bad rep because it is preferred by spammers. They choose .info because it's cheap.

    it doesn't matter. I own nets, coms, and infos. one doesn't have any more ranking power over the others. if a .com isn't available then I'll go for a net or an info.

    It really makes no difference in terms of SEO.

    BUT it does matter to your visitors. I'm much more likely to trust a .com than a .info
