A Very Specific Blog Setup Question

I'm using wordpress blogs to get SEO traffic and it seems to work quite well, my question is... is it better to use a page as a static home page or let the latest blog post be the home page?, in wordpress you have that option

does anyone have any opinion on how this could effect rankings and traffic?

I tend to vary this option based on the function of the site..

Most of my blogs use a last post front page, but on others I use static..

The best thing to do is test this in your niche, all the SEO value in the world is useless if the traffic doesn't perform an MDA* when they get there. Having a static page could be counter-productive, and like wise, a last post front page might be.

You'll want the money keywords to be somewhat static, using a static page is one approach to doing that, but you can often skin the same cat with a sticky post or a widget.

I don't see why either would not work. My PHP pages are equally good as the static ones.

  • The key is finding an SEO friendly template with an attractive design that suits your purpose.

You can dig all you want with keywords but you can only put so many on a page. And the real traffic that converts comes from the longtail unless you can really rank high for broad terms.

For example I have a site that pull in about 500 visitors from the "HomePage". And the vast majority went to an interior page or just left.

The interior pages pull in 1,000's of visitors during the same time period. And that's where I make the money on this particular site.

Let the blog do it's job and that's displaying relevant information to your visitors. If your site is going to be small with few updates then use a static page. If not then use the latest blog post.

If you look at the popular blogs you'll be hard pressed to find one that uses a static homepage.

In my experience it doesn't make much differene but often when I am using a page rather than post for my homepage, I will do keyword links on my hompage to important buried posts.
