Question about selling leads

I am working with a partner on a site that generates leads. The site is getting some real volume but we haven't mobilized it.

We were thinking 2 areas for monetization:
1. Sell leads
2. Sell link space for companies to get listed on our site

Although the site collects leads, we haven't actually set up relations yet to sell them, nor do we know how much we should sell them for.

3 questions:
1. How should we establish those relationships? Should we contact potential clients with an email and pitch them or should we pick up the phone?

2. If the lead pans out, there is at least $300-$500 to be made by the person buying the lead. What should we sell each lead for? I was thinking 1.5%-3% per lead?

3. What can we charge to list companies on the site? I was thinking $50 per month?

To all of your questions, before answering to them, there would be few other important ones.

It all depends on HOW you acquire those leads, what information you collect and how you collect it?

How do they flock to your site and how do they become a "lead", what are they promised? How can you be sure those are actually "leads"?

What's the target market and are they actually really interested in anything you believe they're a "lead" for?

By the nature of your questions and the fact that you "haven't actually set up relations yet to sell them", makes wonder, no offense intended, if you really know what you are doing.

No offense taken. Based on your questions it's clear to me that I wasn't descriptive enough in my post. This concept is a first for me. I've never done anything that ever involved selling leads - hence why I'm posting here. This was an experiment and I'm not claiming to be an expert unlike some on this forum.

We have an opt-in form on the main page of the site that offers a price quote for a specific service. They search google, find us, and on our site they are able to fill out our opt-in form and get competitive pricing for this specific service from various local companies within their area.

IMO, it will be very important that you tell those who are becoming your leads that you're going to sell their personal information to 3rd party clients and they will be contacted by those unnamed clients, possibly numerous times. In other words, disclose to your leads what you are doing with their personal information. If you don't make the disclosure, you will quickly be labeled a spammer and your business will be down the tubes.

I agree, let alone the legal trouble with FTC you will go through.

Thanks Steve. I understand. Maybe a loophole would be getting the quotes myself from third parties and then contacting the lead myself with the best price.

Which is why I would go the ad selling route, or affiliate with your potential lead buyers - you send the prospects via ads and they attempt to capture the information. Then you will only need to mention links to third party sites in your privacy policy.

Thanks man...I'm beginning to think this is the safer and definitely more passive way to go about it. Why get buried with legalities. If I can sell the site in a year or two the new owner can worry about it.

      Thanks guys for your help.
