After a long break I'm trying to get back into internet optimization but looking to do things right this time.

In the last 3 or so years I made over $30,000 with CPAlead with a specific niche but now that niche is dead.. I'm going to be honest, that niche wasn't exactly the most ethical, not a website I'd recommend friends or family to go to.. Nothing illegal though, just wasn't something I'd boast about.

I'm looking to start fresh and do things "right" this time but kinda lost on where to start.. There's so many different paths a person could take but as to what would actually be worth it in the long run I have no idea.. I have a lot of interests in a wide array of subjects but would it be worth starting a blog or something on a mainstream subject like guitars (for example) being there are already communities out on guitar with tons of thousands of users? Or if I'm looking to actually make some money should I do a lot of keyword research and shoot for trends that are a little less generic?

Also how to get traffic.. I read about a lot of different ways, but it's hard to know what would be best for the long run. Even using a reputable backlinking company seems a bit skittish, as there's still risk of your site being blacklisted from major search engines? Then there's e-mail marketing which I doubt in 2015 would be worthwhile as the anti-spam systems have improved? I'm guessing most people are using facebook or other social networking platforms, would this be the way to go? I'm sure this is time consuming though, best to do things legitimately and taking your time or else your account could be banned.

Also what monetizing method.. With CPAlead I was just using a regular gateway content locker, what are you guys using? Direct links to ads you think your audience would be interested in? Adscense? ..etc.

Thanks for any tips you could give me.

    Here's your "cognitive shift."

Doing things right can definitely take time.

If you have a strong enough social media presence, you can almost skip trying to rank these days.

    Who is your audience?

What are you going to sell?

Many niches determine their audience and how they like to consume things.

You need to figure this out. Both of those attacks can work (and do) but what kind of challenge are you up for?

In a certain way I actually feel you can do this without any issue.
You have proved you can be successful before, you saw your last business through to the dying death and you didn't quit. That puts you way up there compared to a lot of people.
So take your time and choose whichever model you wish personally I still love email marketing, but do it right as you suggested, stick with it and grow your business and I have total faith you will be successful again

As far as marketing, one tip is to pick one format and get really good at that one until you have it mastered and understand it well and can get results. Then expand into another marketing format or platform. If you are really dedicated in your learning and implementing, you can do that fairly quickly. For example, I have chosen Twitter as my platform of choice. I'm learning all about it. Doing what I learn. Understanding what is working and not working (as far as getting people back to my website). Adjusting. Trying to shine there. So that's a tip on the marketing side of things.
