Sneaky Tactic - I Call It The "Retard & Restore"

Hi I am not going to ramble on and tell people how smart I am...I got a wife and kids that can tell you otherwise. But this forum has given me alot so I will give back....

Although I am a hyper active 'numb scull' (again the wife and kids can confirm if you dont believe me), I do have a 6 figure online business and I have been noticing something when we update our site allegedly, i will get to this later. BUT THIS WILL KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF!

Tests I have done and we are making an extra $2,500 when our site is down....YES...i said when Our site is down!!!

Please explain numbscull you are probably asking!!!....and think is bogus..so let me explain things a little more indepth.

*FIRST WE RETARD THE WEBSITE....and make it look like its down. It is...well sort of...but we do this for tests on weekends.

1) OK when we are updating our website, I tell the web designer to put up our temporary web graphic with a few links. IT says something along the lines of "Sorry this page is down due to maintainence!"

2) Under this graphic we put in our links where we have lots of aff products and where we like our traffic going and these products are our highest converting ones. With the message "Dont worry we will be back up and running soon, in the meantime check out these...blah...blah...."

Sneak city central : This is the sneaky bit, Our website is not really down, (well, on some occasions we use this time to back up stuff) we are really just testing things, products, links, titles, headlines and even have a comment section on the website saying "what would you like to see more of at this site" that gets heaps and heaps of comments, and we can get a clear view of what people want...so we can give it to them....like a survey if you want to call it that YES!

We just wait for sales to come in....and they DO...most the time.

*NOW WE RESTORE THE WEBSITE ...

1) Early (very early i might add) on Monday morning I come into the office and move things around on the server so that things are back to normal...

2) We make sure things are working, check sale stats, and see what is working and what isn't.

3) We found this works as sometimes bigger sites (like ours) people get lost and really need to be directed to the main 3 or 4 links where you want them to go (depending on what they want too). One of my employees call this recyclin' our traffic...so i guess we are in way.... but HOT DAMN IT WORKS!!

Last weekend we were able to get a little more traffic and $2,649.34 worth of sales. Yes..just with this one page....COOL HUH.

Feel Free to use our "Retard & Restore" method. There is lots of stuff you can test too.... yes that's right I bet the brain is ticking over right now EY??....

ANYWAY...

It seems to be working for us...yes even in this damn RECESSION.

Hope this helps you make money, testing is the most fun part of marketing.

Cheers Celente

    Interesting Celente...

This type of tactic reminds me of something I thought of while reading Robert Cialdini's "Influence" book...but it would be on the border of ethical since it's technically untrue

what if you're landing page said something along the lines of "too many people visited the website and brought down our servers. While we fix the problem, we've placed a temporary sign up page to download your free report (or check out these products, etc, etc., etc.)..." basically have it say whatever you want the visitor to do.

Maybe this would benefit from the "social proof" concept of Cialdini that will make the reader subconciously think "wow, lots of people are visiting this page....I hope they get the server back up soon so I can see their content. In the meantime I'll get the report, click on the aff product, (or whatever the conversion is).

I noticed another marketer doing this (i think) over the past week. I signed up for their webinar, along with (supposedly) 12,000 other people. Then, half way through the webinar (I didn't end up attending), I received an email that said something like "ooooppsss. We packed too many people on the webinar and fried the lines. Everyone got kicked off, but I think we fixed the problem. Here's the link....". While reading this email I started to think that maybe I missed out on a great webinar since "so many people" were on it....

This is just a random thought that popped into my head while reading your post. Could be cause I haven't had my morning cup of coffee yet : /

Cool idea. The only worrisome thing to me would be what Google "sees" while you've got that temporary page up for a day or two. Does it mess with your rankings at all? Have you tracked it? I guess if you're not seeing a loss of traffic during the week since starting this little technique, there's your answer. But I would worry longer term about Google de-indexing or failing to pick up on new content on your site. Of course, $2,500 in 2 days probably makes up for that potential problem, huh? LOL
