Do you transcribe your videos? Whether it be youtube or videos on your site.

Why do you transcribe?

How much do you pay to have it outsourced?

I use transcriptions for videos on web pages because it gives me an additional SEO 'hook' for added traffic.

I outsource video transcriptions of conversations at the rate of $4 per 10 minutes. I insist on edited work though. Raw transcriptions are too garbled to be of much use.

If you conduct lots of interviews or you go to symposiums and talk to people, recorded interviews and interactions are great sources of FREE content (which leads to FREE web traffic if you know what you're doing). Of course, you need to make sure you have the proper legal releases.

I detest transcriptions that include every um, ah, and verbal stumble. Devalues the transcription.

True. Also, when the transcription doesn't properly organize the line of thought of the speakers.

Properly transcribed, edited, and formatted, multi-person interviews can read like a well-written article.

Absolutely! Every audio and video should be transcribed - and converted into pdfs, kindle books, slide share, etc.

I pay $1/min. Yes, I could go cheaper - but I prefer quality and consistency over cheap.

I've done a lot of testing of transcriptions on YouTube. If you are using the transcriptions to create additional products great, that's how it should be used. But if you are looking at transcriptions to improve your YouTube standings don't waste your time. From my testing transcriptions have no effect on YouTube placement. Google already has technology to check the first minute or so of a video for keywords used and that will have an effect on placement, no transcription needed.

Transcriptions are great if the audience you are targeting uses closed captioning, pretty much required for that.

And, the YouTube tool for automatically generating transcriptions from a video is basically useless. Transcriptions have to be manually created, or at the very least carefully edited in order to be worth anything.
