hey! How is everyone? Im looking to make a business out of creating websites (wordpress), but am not exactly sure how to go about marketing them. i read some posts in the forums over the last hour, but most require startup capital. How could i find my first client so i can start building things up and putting things together? How do you guys think i can find businesses that need websites?

Your first client will come from friends/family. Just start letting people know you're doing websites and someone will either need one or know someone who needs one. Then just do an amazing job on that site no matter what the fee. The first site(s) aren't about profit they are your marketing.
Once you have the first site then you have something to show people when they ask what sites you've done.

You can start by posting an announcement on your FB wall.

Next, create a LinkedIn account and digitally hobnob with startup company founders in groups at LinkedIn.

There are many people with money looking for TALENTED web developers who use the WP platform.

If you don't have a marketing budget then I'd stick to the fundamentals and do what no one else is prepared to do.

    COLD CALL

Call up companies one by one and pitch your idea, send them some sample templates of how their site could look. Impress them.

You'll have your first client pretty soon - cold calling never fails.

Welcome to the forum, and good job of studying on your own time before posting.

So you build Wordpress sites and sell them to business owners? Are they offline business owners, or online business owners? You can find your first client by first targeting your audience. I can tell you to use PPC and put up a simple consulting ad, but who would be best to use your services? Do you know the differences between marketing a product versus marketing a service?

Here's something no one has mentioned yet...

Most of your prospects have zero interest in buying a Wordpress website. Zilch. Nada.

What they want is something that will make their businesses run better, smoother, more profitably.

Show them how you can make that happen, without burying them in technobabble, and you'll have a winner.

Getting your first few clients by networking through friends and family works. You can also network with the people you already do business with - landscapers/lawn services, plumbers, electricians, cleaners, restaurants you may be a regular at, etc. Don't directly pitch the service. Ask them who they know that might have an interest in [one good benefit, like getting more leads, etc.]. All you are looking for at this point is an introduction.

Once you get that first client, wow the heck out of them. Then start the whole "who do you know that might want [benefit]" routine again.

Since you have not identified your client, you're at a loss as to how to market them.
Just like niche marketing, you need to do some niche targeting.

Pick the best niche you know how to dazzle them with and approach that niche client. It will define your marketing strategy, focus your efforts and improve your closing of sales.

i understand, but don't know how far to go as what niche?

can that be, per say.. a small business owner thats not tech savvy that runs a service based business, or..

a specific business, such as plumber, electrician, dentist, lawyer, etc etc.?

John gave a very good suggestion which you should focus your approach on. Knowing a bit about the business environment in your area will help immensely. I just started a new campaign for a particular business type in my area I know is reeling from lack luster sales levels - so I am addressing that particular market with a solution to their need directly.

Again, this depends on what I suggested previously. But, do you know of any dentist without a website? I think that most will have one by now, but I bet most of them are not utilizing their websites efficiently in one or more areas. This could be due to design / functionality gaps.

However, there is a lot of competition for these traditional businesses. You may want to aim for new start-ups in a particular niche that you can bring unique value with your offering.

For this you will need to do more than just put a website together - do you have that skillset / mindset? Finding unique solutions, strategies and functionality for niche businesses will be your best ally in reaching and retaining new clients and succeeding profitably in your web "design" business.

    Look in the Offline subforum.

This topic is more heavily covered there (who to talk to, what to say.)

More people who are actually doing this kind of work participate there.
