The Upside: The Power of Free

This is a great article by my favorite author, Marc Acito (author of How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship, and Musical Theater) that offers a really cool NON-INTERNET MARKETER perspective on price points, content marketing, digital distribution, and the magic "FREE" word.

Some good stuff in here:

    Great post, thanks!

FREE has always been the most powerful word in marketing, but it's even more important in a down economy. Companies that give away free products these days are finding out that their goodwill is getting noticed and actually helping their bottom line.

Denny's gave away a free Grand Slam breakfast and Jack In the Box was handing out free tacos just yesterday (sorry for the late notice). These were no-strings-attached offers, and I think that most people both appreciate and will remember it when times are better.

In the IM world, there is definitely a place for FREE giveaways. I respect most the people who selflessly give valuable information and tools, and it lets me know the quality of their offerings without risk. It's reasonable to assume that if their free stuff is good, their pay stuff is probably even better.

Yeah free stuff has caused a marketing frenzy lately if you notiiced.Lately practically everyday there is a new giveaway being offered.this practice really helps people with new products and list building. But i have noticed a lot of old products being given away at these giveaways so be selective.

Yeah, reading this at first made me think, "Wow, offline businesses are really adopting some online business models!" But then I realized, no. Humans are humans, and this is just how we work - whether we're staring at our computer screens, eating Grand Slams and Tacos, or getting our dry cleaning done.
