Search engine position decline

Hi

I own a sound effects library which launched in April this year. My main keyword I am targeting is 'free sound effects' which I originally ranked on page 2 for in Google and page 5 on Bing and Yahoo a few weeks ago.

However I am now moving between pages 2 and 3 on Google and I have dropped out of Yahoo and Bing's top 250 results.

I list sound effects on the home page and they also are listed in category pages too. Also if you click on a sound, a dedicated page opens with the description there too. So my sounds are appearing in three places on the site.

Could duplicate content be causing the decline? Also many sounds have 'version' so the description might be duplicated (Dog barking loudly in kennels 1, dog barking loudly in kennels 2... etc)

Or might it just be fluctuations as I have a new domain? I have 7,000 free sound effects and add approx 400 a week randomly but new content is added every day.

Any advice would be fantastic

It's unlikely the duplicate content is an issue as many sites this one included have a snipet or title that you click on to see the main content.
It is possible your competitors are gaining popularity, or your page is getting other negative seo effecting it.
Really there are loads of reasons for a drop in search. All you can really do is try to promote your site as best you can with legit strategies because if you try any black hat stuff that could hurt you more.

Commonly known as "The Google Dance."

New sites often rank high at first.

I have looked at your site and have a few suggestions.

First, your keyword is "free sound effects" and yet I can find only two places in the entire site where that phrase is used, outside of your meta title -- only once in the small amount of text content on the home page. If you want Google to rank you for that phrase, you need to add much more content and use the phrase frequently, but naturally and not excessively.

Add some content about how sound files might be used, what's good about free sound files, who uses sound files, why free is better, etc. etc. Right now, you have very little for Google to "bite" into to know what your site is about. Look at some your competitors' sites and see what they are doing different and better.

I know you're proud of your domain name but it says nothing about what the site is about. Therefore, you would be better to change your home page meta title to "Free Sound Effects | ZapSplat" instead of using your domain name first.

Put more text descriptions and content on your category pages, and use your keyword. Although you have a lot of good sound files to download, the file names mean nothing to Google.

Did I understand that you recently changed domain names? That in itself is a good explanation for ranking dropback.
