I unfollowed almost everyone on Twitter.
If I'm still following someone, it is because I either have a pre-existing relationship with them, or I would like to some day. They are all people that I value, whom I would like to open a dialog with.
Why? Because I got sick and tired of ignoring Twitter! It could be a fantastic tool, but all I ever really got from it was a bunch of spam, and thousands of bit.ly affiliate links.
I've tried marketing over twitter - it didn't work for me, because I don't like the way everyone else is doing it. I follow people because I want to hear what they have to say - not because I want them to follow me back, so I can shove spam down their throats.
I encourage you all to give it a try. I've made some great connections today with people I really respect - all because I could actually SEE their messages, and RESPOND. Sure, it probably won't turn into multi-billion-dollar JV deals - but who cares? I respect these people, and they took the time out of their day to read what I had to say.
Maybe, one day, I'll have something truly valuable to say to them - just like they do for me, all the time.
I have a new rule - if more than 75% of your tweets are links or retweets, I'm unfollowing you. That may end up 50%, I don't know yet. But it seems to be working so far!
So, should I follow any of you? Would you like to join the mass-unfollowing with me?
P.S. Use TwitterKarma for your mass unfollows - very helpful
