Can Foxit replace Adobe Reader ?

I tried to upgrade Adobe Reader to version 9.
It seemed to take ages then just before the end
something funny happened, my PC decided to reboot,
I can't install 9 or the previous version 8
and I can't even do a system restore.

So I've just installed Foxit and wonder
if I need Adobe.

    Hi Harvey,

FoxIt replaced adobe on my computers about a year ago. It's a much smaller program and I haven't found any downside.

Foxit supports 'many' PDF features but I don't recommend to it to my clients because many of them create their PDFs using InDesign which uses PDF features only supported by Acrobat Reader.

From the sound of it, Foxit is more than good enough for what you need.

    @Sean

I use InDesign to create PDFs. Now you have me curious as to what special features are created in InDesign that might make it difficult for foxit users to read my PDF files.

    Hi Don,

I need to check my helpdesk history but I remember it was something to do with layering.

Foxit PDF Reader is on of the smallest PDF reader, better that Adobe Acrobat. But sometimes the links are not clickable in Foxit whereas they work with Acrobat. I use both.

What makes me love Foxit is how fast it loads. Double click the pdf and it's up instantly. Adobe is a slug by comparison.

      Hello Harvey,
I prefer PDF Viewer over Foxit, it's also free and has more features. Like Foxit, you don't need to install it, you can run it on a USB drive.
      Regards.

This is because Foxit takes any uppercase letters in links and automatically converts them into lowercase before sending the request to your browser. I guess it's a bug - I don't know why they would do this on purpose.

I discovered this a few years ago right after writing a report with lots of links in it (many containing uppercase letters after the .com part). Since I'd already published the report, all I could do was create a bunch of new pages on my site that redirected the lowercase links to the regular ones.

Something to keep in mind when writing a report now, as Foxit is getting more and more popular.

Other than that minor annoyance, Foxit is awesome! Loads faster, and is much snappier navigating around a PDF than Adobe.

I stopped using Acrobat because it was too huge and slow. I have been using Foxit for a long time now and I am happy with it, not to mention it loads fast.

For a moment I thought you said you had not found any downloads.

I'll bear that in mind but for now it seems that Foxit will do the job.

Thank you everyone for your helpful replies

I agree Foxit is an impressive tool.

If you want to see why Acrobat Reader is bigger and slower, check out the plugins that are installed under this folder:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\plug_ins

Removing many of the unnecessary plugins will speed up Acrobat Reader many times over. Be careful though and first make a backup of the files before removing them, some plugins are required for Reader to function correctly. Ideally move one plugin at a time to a backup folder and check the result.

    Hi,

I just wanted to give my say on this. While Foxit has proved to be a worthy application, I've found PDF-XChange to be a superior product and it also has a free version available, which is the one I use and enjoy. You may want to look it up, it's well worth your time IMO.

I'll keep this now useless thread alive.... LOL

I use and love FoxIt! Same complaint about Adobe.... that thing's a monster space hog and takes forever to load up files. I had the same issue trying to upgrade... didn't take and kept wanting reboots. FoxIt's fast and small. Does what probably 99.9% of typical users would want it for.

I will have to agree with the OP. Foxit is great. I quit using Adobe after
finding foxit. In this day of instant info who wants to wait forever for
acrobat to load so you can read a 3 page report?

Never heard of it and see no reason to try it as Adobe working just fine. It's not even slow on my PC.
