I hope this thread hasn't been done to death (I have only been a member for two months, so apologies if I haven't paid close attention)

I really like and espouse the use of Wordpress. A lot at your disposal...you have lots of control, great choice of plug-ins, very professional looking sites overall. My big thing I noticed is that only a small handful of the free themes look pretty good...The Twenty Ten, Twenty Eleven, and Twenty Fourteen are about the best themes. Many of the others either look dated, not very modifiable, or buggy. If you have found a few other themes other than the ones that begin with "Twenty..." that look very good, please let me know, as some I may have missed or overlooked. If money was not an object for me I would be checking into WooThemes as I have heard good things about them. Them and Elegant Themes.

I have hard people speak very highly of Weebly because of all the drag and drop functionality and easy to customize interface and all....I decided to give it a try last night to see what the fuss was about for a new niche site domain. I was under the impression that if you purchased a domain elsewhere, Weebly had a free hosting option. I was trying to get to that point, (I hit "Publish" as per directions I was given) but got took to a page where I was expected to pick out an upgrad plan. Not exactly what I was expecting. I was looking for the "I already have a domain" option but did not find it. I only saw "Register your own domain" (not work) or "register a subdomain" (did not want that) and one other thing, but seemed pointless. Thankfully I didn't sink a ton of effort into the first page.

Well, I think I will stick with Wordpress, is the verdict here. I have the multiple domain "Baby Croc" hosting plan from Host Gator and have been pleased...What have some of you guys experienced with weebly or Wordpress? Which one was easier to master or better overall in terms of functionality, etc.?

The person who recommended Weebly and claimed they hosted sites for free and all, is a very nice young entrepreneur....but as they say, different strokes for different folks.

I have been a Weebly fan for a long time. But also I have some WordPress sites. I think they do different things better, so it's good to have a clear picture of where you are going and what you want to do.

Both Weebly and WordPress have free blogs with their company name in the url. OR both of them are or may be available through your hosting company as a site platform with your own independent url. I host with Bluehost for a couple of my sites, and I chose Weebly, purchasing through Bluehost.

I think if you want to do simple things, Weebly is much more intuitive.

If you want a lot more control and plugins and this and that, WordPress.

But then they have their drawbacks. What Weebly does easily, it's hard to get done in WordPress. What WordPress does easily, it's hard to get done in Weebly.

What I like about Weebly is the ease of design. With WordPress I have to find a theme that looks almost exactly how I want it, and I don't get too much flexibility (but on the other hand, a lot of themes to choose from--which makes me tear my hair out). But with Weebly, I just get a simple theme, and I can add any of the drag and drop elements where I want them.

What I like about WordPress is that you can just keep adding capability with plugins. Some plugins work or are available for Weebly too, but just not as many. And in the case of Affiliate Marketing and like amazon store plugins, I'm not sure they work with Weebly. (Although they do have a commerce edition, but it might be for your own stuff mostly.)

I am far from an expert. But going from Weebly to WordPress was positively painful, learning to do the "work" that was not work in Weebly. But one thing I hate about Weebly that is really easy in WordPress is in WordPress you can name your blog post url whatever you want. Weebly, you can't do that at all, not sure why, it's really dumb.

    Hi,

It depends what your end goals are, they both have their Pros and Cons. I personally like Wordpress and it fits my needs better. If you want to build a nice business website or blog, WordPress can do that for you - and there are free and inexpensive themes that you can purchase.

Weebly seems nice if you need to build a website rather easily and quickly and don't have time to learn WordPress. With that being said Wordpress has a top-notch support community that is extensive and you will always be able to find help there (for a fee of course!)

In my own view I like more wordpress than Weebly. Wordpress is high branded site and it has huge available theme in free so that are very helpful for creating a website as much dynamic.

I've tried Blogger, WordPress, Yola, and Wix.
Wix themes are very customizable and that's a great feature and they have great plugins too.
    However, I preferred WordPress.
So, I would recommend WordPress and Wix, but never tried weebly.

Yeah WordPress is awesome and a better supported platform in terms of plugins and functions, I mean just have a look at Envato, you can find SOOOOO much awesome WordPress add-ons there that are ready for be used on your site. I think WordPress is by far a better option due to how much you can do with it and the prices are pretty reasonable too.

I love using Wordpress, there is a learning curve at first but it's got everything you need if you want to build a brand or business.

Weebly is good for small affiliate sites if you don't need too much.

    No one had mentioned it...

The free version of wordpress is 100% not for profit.

I had a site there in 2010, and somehow after asking a question on the support forums, the e tire blog was nuked because a site with perhaps two dozen pages had one affiliate link in one post.

I would say that my experience with modular design stuff is limited, but if you were to host your own site and purchase a good theme with support, wordpress will have literally unlimited customization options.

I can't imagine any platform that can boast that.
I choose wordpress for that reason

I found one free theme I like so far very much, Iconic One....Saw it on someone else's blog and liked the layout so decided to try it out for myself...looks pretty nice...

Yes, Weebly had some nice themes too, you all are right about the "intuitive" part....nothing wrong with that; there are people who prefer it....Wordpress is hard to beat in terms of professionalism :-)

Wordpress without a doubt, imo SEO is better, more plugins and customization.

One thing I have learned about wordpress themes is when you do the preview they do not look near as good when compared to when they are actually installed on your site.

Look at the theme I have installed on my site at BodyMindMuscle | Transform Yourself! it is awesome looking in my own opinion but the preview looked horrible before i installed it.

I have also found out that the themes in the most popular section when filtering through which them to choose are the best, it is obviously why they are popular and should be obvious but I missed it at first.

Also there are a lot of cheap gigs on Fiverr that can get you some decent work for cheap.

WordPress for sure as I think they have tons of resources for all kinds of users - free templates, free plugins, easy to use interface, SEO- and Google-friendly, and active online support community. Not to mention, it is also open source platform so that you can modify and extend existing features of a plugin and templates to achieve more interactiveness in your site...

I know services like weebly, wix or jimdo (these drag&drop WYSIWYG website creators). I never liked them. You are not independent (must stay at this hoster), you can´t design your own template completly the way you like.

Wordpress is the best CMS out there. These WYSIWYG services are not real CMS systems, they are just web-based editors. Never liked that stuff.

If you want to keep things simple, go with Weebly. If you have a long term plan, go with WordPress. Overall, WordPress is actually a lot better according to me but it is complex too if you are a newbie.

For non techie, weebly or wordpress.com is the way to go but for anyone willing to learn how to, wordpress.org is great.

I started off using Weebly because of their promos of free things. While I have to say it isn't a bad place to start off hosting a site, as soon as I started needing even the smallest things I would find out that Weebly dosent have them. Wordpress is just much better in every way imaginable when compared to Weebly

Weebly is great for newbies. But it has limitations. As for wordpress, with some programming and coding knowldge, you can really make your wordress site into anything.

It depends on the use you want to give it, and how techie you are--also how much of a control freak you are.

I come from joomla sites, when they were mambo, so weebly annoys me and only now I'm coming to terms with wp and its limitations.

But when my kids wanted to start playing with their own sites, I set up a weebly site for each.

So... if you already went all the way to have hosting, weebly is out of the equation. If you are non techie at all and want to get started yesterday, weebly is a good answer.

As someone who has used both, I would have steered you toward Wordpress a couple of years ago (and it's still a stellar platform) but Weebly has come a long way and you can't beat it for how easy it is to build a website and get rolling.

I think one of the main things I like about Weebly being less technical and less customizable, is the fact that those of us who are likely to get caught up on second guessing every little detail are more likely to waste time doing so on wordpress.

For most people, the hardest part is just putting your head down and creating valuable content that people can't get anywhere else. To that effect, weebly will give you a quicker setup so you can just get to it!

At least, that's my two cents

    - Brandon

I have the sites of both Weebly and WordPress and both are unique. Both have some great features that make a difference for user. I like both for web 2.0.
1 thing I want to mention about weebly feature. If you are using free version of both, you will get the analytics and webmaster tracking code space in weebly SEO settings and that is very good feature, while in WordPress there is no way to track your visit with Google analytics.
