I know a lot of people swear by social bookmarking but to be honest I have never really got to grips with it (I am hoping to change this).

I have social bot software that automatically submits to loads of sites but I don't get much traffic after a blast. I just use this tool now to get the pages my backlinks rest on indexed.

Does anyone get much traffic and sales from bookmarks?

The only person who I have talked to who was making money with this was doing a dodgy trick. He signed up for multiple accounts through proxies and then kept voting his bookmark so it went to top of category and he got massive traffic. he said he was getting 6,000 uniques a day using this technique until they banned him, and he had to rinse and repeat.

I'm new to bookmarking, so may not be doing it right (still tweaking my methods). For some of my bookmarks, I get small spikes of traffic, but then it dries up. I'm looking for ways of getting "sustained" traffic from these efforts, and also testing which bookmark sites perform the best. Out of my very limited testing so far, Stumbleupon seems to be generating the best results, although Propeller gave better SERPS responses for key terms.

    Still testing though...

Have you tracked any sales back to bookmarks?

To be honest, this is just a traffic experiment, so is going to a content site, which means no sales per se. I'm watching my Adsense income though, which hasn't been affected as yet.

Again, probably not enough data to play with at this stage.

It's strange how I see at least 1 thread a day where someone recommends to use bookmarks but there seems to be lack of people having success with them (judging by response to this thread)

How about sales? I'm starting to find it funny the amount of hype social bookmarking has got and I can't find anyone who is using it to make sales.

Social Bookmarking can't magically bring you sales - only your sales page can do that. What social bookmarking will do for you, though, is generate backlinks, and hopefully spark some interest in your site that will bring in new visitors.

I don't know, but perhaps these visitors should be brought to a squeeze page instead of your main sales page, as they may not be on your site for long.

Unless your bookmarks show up in the SERPs where people are actually searching for what you're offering, then I think the traffic you get directly from your bookmarks is not really targeted. Still, the additional backlinks that are generated from bookmarking still make it worthwhile IMO.

I have not got any noticeable effect from the backlinks of bookmarks. IMO 1 article at EZA is better than running an auto social poster on every site.

Are you going to the accounts and actually log into the site ? Are you making friends request ? Are you creating or joining groups ? In otherwords are you just using software to submit but not giving anything back to the site by being an actual member and taking part in the site ????

This is the huge mistake many make, they just assume since they have software to submit then they do not need to do anything else. WRONG!!! If you want the full effects of bookmerking then you need to become a member by taking part in the sites and that means login, make friends, create groups, join groups, post comments, and etc...

All of this should have been explained to you when you purchased your software....

      What????

Why would he get a course on marketing by purchasing a software product that does a specific task?

Basically, you are saying if I sell real estate software than I should be telling them how to buy or sell houses as well.

Personally, I think you are still trying to take the piss out of Big Mike and his products.

First off, do not spam. Do not use sock puppet accounts. Do not treat social bookmarking sites and any other social media primarily a traffic source. You will be found out and you will be hit by the big spiky stick of clue! :)

You must network, you must submit quality, on-topic content. Engage the communities, be natural and organic, actually participate other than to push your own agenda.

I get traffic and my clients have got good traffic, but as mentioned above, the links are the real pay off.

For example I can routinely get tens of thousands of visits, but unless your topic is geeky or are looking at a niche bookmarking site then the ROI is in the links because none of those people are going to convert, even to subscribers

Conversion rate from Digg or Reddit is normally below 2% for a generic, non-geek niche. Niche sites however (tipd, any of the design ones, etc) have better conversion BUT do not use popups or make direct offers (way to get banned).

Links are the real payoff, and if you carefully target the keywords, rankings follow.

Also some of these sites rank well in search anyway, so you put in your phrase and 1/3 of the serp is your stuff, directly or indirectly

Thomas, you can think what you want - I really do not care... When I sell a products, yes I provide information. I have several products right now that I provide indepth detail on when they are purchased. So to answer your question, yes you should tell them how to buy and sell real estate because it is called good customer service.

Just my opinion though for someone that has created and sold products for over 15 years...

Yes, I have heard manual bookmarking gets better results (kinda why I started this thread to find out if its worth my time).

I am not knocking social bot. It's great for running my backlinks through to make sure they are indexed.

I have only talked to one person who was making money from bookmarks and he was putting a lot of effort into scamming the system (I'm still not sure if the amount of effort he put in was rewarded).

ChrisGarrett - When you say 2% conversion, what is the product? On some of my pages I would rub my hands together with glee if I got 0.5% conversion.

It sounds like you have got a good system there. Would you mind elaborating a little to point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

Nothing wrong with using automative submission at all... You do not have to do the bookmarking manually but you should be taking part in those sites because that is what gives you the direct traffic from those sites. It is just like any other social media site such as myspace, facebook, and others. You must be apart of the community to get out of it what you want.

Ah, sorry, those conversion rates were for opt-ins, not sales - not as exciting, huh? heh

But the opt-ins lead to sales, and the links lead to serps, which lead to opt-ins, which lead to sales
