What if you can't pay for traffic?

Hey all,

While I'm pretty well-versed in IM and such, the biggest stumbling block for would be that I don't have money nor a single red cent for paid traffic. What advice would you give me to get over this hump? Is it realistic to generate the traffic I desire even if by using free methods only? Thank you a lot.

Well, there's no such thing as FREE traffic.

You're either paying in the form of MONEY or TIME.

Since time is money, there's no free traffic.

With that said, any site that enables you to build a link that goes to third-party site is a potential source of traffic.

I say 'potential' because you have to make sure you get optimal RETURN ON EFFORT.

Unique and valuable content distribution is one of the best free traffic generators I know. And yes, it does take time to write the content, distribute it to targeted audiences, and then more time is required for traffic to hit your web site and offer. But if you can't pay for traffic, this is a workable alternative.

Focus on creating detailed and specific (to the niche) content - not just regurgitating general information like so many "content creators" do.

One unique and detailed article is preferable, IMO, to a dozen general ones. So spend the time to dig deep and research your articles well. Those that are relevant, timely, and written with a voice of authority are the most likely to be picked up and redistributed through the network within the niche.

If you don't write well, you can hire out the writing . . . but plan to have to pay a good amount to do that (which probably isn't an option for you).

I used to say the Internet did not discriminate. What you lacked in money for marketing and website traffic you could compensate by spending time to create your own free marketing and get traffic off of it.

That is really not as true anymore. The reality is very few people will ever create enough free traffic from content, backlinks, etc. Even organic traffic from Google is pretty much out of reach for the average person unless you are in a very small micro niche or find a way to target enough long tail keywords to start getting traffic from the rankings they create for you.

In my opinion paid traffic is the only thing you can control. I agree with Tal, find a way to earn some money and invest some of that into paid advertising. As that works re-invest some of your profits and scale up from there.

You can get amazing traffic with Reddit, Youtube (If done right) and IReport on CNN and Haro.

Again it all depends on what you want traffic to.

But even the best SEO's spend money to help achieve their rankings...so their still isn't really anything as free traffic.

^I know, but what I'm saying is, what if I can't pay a red cent for FB ads or PPC ads or other conventional forms of paid traffic? I know there's no such as free because you're investing in your time instead, that's why I'm asking if anyone here has been successful with getting traffic the "free way" (like guest posting, but that's just an example) and not with paid traffic. If not, can anyone give me advice on what to do?

      Yes, guest posting works.

      Forum marketing works well too.

Facebook has lots of targeted groups, group traffic can lead to conversions too.

The only limit is your imagination.

Almost all free methods can easily be searched online so you can figure out how to do them step by step. There are tons of blog posts outlining free traffic generation methods.

Payed traffic doesn't necessarily make you money. Its good for creating your list in an easier and fast way, but doesn't necessarily make you a good amount of sales.. So you probably should give a solid effort in creating organic traffic. If this would be of any help to you i'd probably say start off with facebook the second most visited website in the world. Just join massive groups such as MMO groups or any type of group that would be in your interest or your niche. Hope this helps anyway

      Not one cent for traffic...

Good idea would be to use youtube to gain traffic to your website.

Google hangouts videos rank higher on Google search engine because they like to promote themselves

You could create simple text videos and voice overs to get your visitors to where you want them.

I did this with a bunch of CPA products and they still make me money n bring traffic now and I did those videos a year ago

      Hope that helps,

Use the "free" methods to drive traffic. Do a search on this forum for detailed threads on how to drive free traffic.

You will need to invest a lot of time though. Once you start getting money you can then invest it back into paid traffic.

There are basically two types of traffic.

    Paid and Free.

What you are discussing is paid traffic ie. Solo Ads. Google Adsense, Facebook as, etc.

There are many ways to generate Free Traffic. Forum, Article writing, SEO on a website/blog, if you have those. Do a Search on this forum and you will find many, many suggestions and even how to do a traffic getting strategy.

That's why this forum is great. There are many people here who can help you find something you can work with to get traffic. Heck there was even one post I read yesterday that could get traffic within hours of setup.

Not to mention all the suggestions you have here.

You are in good hands on this forum.

Are you well versed enough in anything to create a product out of it? If you could put some of your own products on affiliate market places you could get affiliates promoting them for you, build a list of customers and then market to them.

Get creative! Spend some time in the "Growth Hacking" section of this forum. It's not uncommon for people to have small to non-existent budgets when starting a business, and while SEO used to be the go-to answer (and is still a decent one), you might want to now think about other options like:

    1) Picking at a unique social media angle (it might only be remotely related to your business, but you can rebrand a bit later on). For example, we're a survey software startup and we're starting to place daily surveys on our social media to build up those channels. The surveys aren't about anything related to business necessarily (we focus on business clients), but they get people engaged and help to spread the brand name. Down the road, we'll have an audience when we want to put out more promotional posts.

    2) Blog and guest blog, but, again, get creative. Blogs are still widely read and appreciated, but it's more common these days to spice things up with better design, multimedia, inforgraphics, etc. to stand out. The bottom line remains the same though: Say the smartest, most well-researched things in your niche, and you'll be golden.

    All the best,

    R

This. Squeeze pages are usually best off with paid traffic as I understand it as you want guaranteed traffic quickly, while normal websites flourish when you engage in getting organic and so-called 'free' traffic.

I picked up on you mentioning guest posting on blogs, so I am assuming this is something your are thinking about doing.

Guest posting is a great way to get traffic, it most definitely works as long as of course you are offering good advice in your blog post and you guest post on quality blogs that have regular readers.

You say you are well-versed in IM so go and help others. Forum Marketing is very under-rated and is a great way of getting traffic.

You can have videos made for very little on sites like fiverr that as long as you do a good script will get your traffic or sales of products.

There are also ways you can use Facebook to get traffic and make sales without paying a single $ I do this, I know it works.

If you would like to pay for traffic but as you say can't afford, is that really true? Are there things you could cut back on? Do you have items laying around your home that you don't use that you can list on eBay?

Maybe you could add making your ad money using eBay to your strategy.

    All the best

        Hi mate,

As you probably already know, add a link to any Facebook post and you post will be slapped and Facebook have there ways of limiting your post being seen.

So create a post that gets attention either in a funny way a controversial way or even run a competition.

        I ran a competition and I got good results and this is how;

Post when people check their Facebook accounts, there's 2 spikes 7 Am - 9 Am and 5 Pm - 7 Pm. There is a little spike at lunch but no where near the size of just before work and after finishing work.

Your want your post to be getting likes, comments and share as this tells FB bots your post is of value for whatever reason so more people see it. Now for the sly bit that is not breaking any rules because you aren't adding a clickable link.

What you do is in your comments is add your affiliate link, blog or website broken for example ianghowarth .com/FREE-VIDEO and let people copy n paste it. If you are in IM groups on FB most who will see that broken link will copy and paste it into there browser, especially if you have been creative with your bost atrracting people who are looking to make money online.

Done consistently you will see your link being clicked and I have made sales using this method.

        All The Best.

Maybe you need another job, or you need to create a second income that will allow you to be able to dedicate 100% of those funds to purchasing traffic.

The biggest issue in my opinion with 'free' traffic, whether it's from SEO or not, is the scability isn't there.

You can usually scale paid traffic much easier than free traffic. It's possible to get traffic from free methods (look at craigslist posting for example, they don't do it for shits and giggles).

Also, you have to realize the limitations with any form of Free Traffic... primarily speaking about the inconsistency of the source. Google changes the algorithm, you can lose everything. Website changes ToS and how you can use the site, you can lose it. People flag your stuff, you lose it.

It's a matter inconsistency with free traffic that bothers me.

If you can't afford some forms of paid traffic, I'd question why you're starting in IM?

One of the viable ways nowadays to get free traffic from SEO is to target lots of long-tail keywords with low competition. Build a blog and target only long-tail keywords and you will see results. Aim at creating lengthy posts though so that there are enough long-tail keywords in there for ranking easily.

First to develop the mindset that you need a traffic/advertising budget for your business. There are dozens of free marketing strategies that you can take action and be steady not for just 1 or 2 days but weeks/months and reinvest those profits into your advertising budget.

Just one little thing you can do is learn to network on facebook. Network with others and not pitch your product or service.

Thats like me the single guy going to a party and seeing a hot girl at the other end and running up to her asking her to marry and have my kids...

    yeah right....

    but, but....

If I take the time to learn and speak with her I'll learn more and might even decide that she is not a good fit. Enough time spent... Move on

You might go through a couple till you find one but because you took the time and did not try to convince everyone your conversions are a lot higher.

Come up with a set of questions and whether how much the other side tries to pitch their product to you don't bite but relieve they are in desperate need of our services. Politely ask them and move on.. If they reply great

You take the time and do this approach you will start talking with people on a daily basis much better than if you just went from group to group shouting buy my product its the best....

    Hey abilify182,

yeah, you can drive free traffic. and you can use lots of different traffic sources to drive free traffic But Before you even try to drive free traffic you need to know about the Key Component for FREE TRAFFIC.

That is Engagement. What ever traffic you use to drive free traffic you need to Engage your audience with you. you need to talk about the things they are interested in before talking about yourself.

Think about this we can talk about things we are interested in for hours, but we cannot talk more than 10 minutes about the things we are not interested in. Its Human nature and it applies everywhere.

If you post the content that people want to learn about, are struggling with or want help with, you will see response from people. The more you do it the more people are going to engage with you and your content. You are going to get shares, likes and comment.

Than once you build trust with your information, you can drive that traffic to whatever site you want.

But Remember, I will take some time to get a fair amount of traffic. so need to keep doing this consistently. The best part is that you can use this method to drive traffic in any niche and from and any website which allows you to post content.

    Happy to help,

    Rohit Thakur

Depending upon free traffic initially has to be a time bound activity.

Time is as important as money and so should be planned and utilized properly.

So you have to first plan about for how much time initially you will be generating free traffic to generate some money so that you can use all or part of that money for paid traffic to generate more sales.

Further, the free traffic you generate has to be a targeted traffic that converts and not just any free traffic. You can opt for groups, forums, community sites, etc. for the purpose.

At some point of time, you need to start using both kinds of traffics free and paid, if you are serious enough. Just entirely trying to generate free traffic only can be a costly hobby rather than a business.

I guess you've read every advice here...my advice is pretty much the same as everyone else.

It's very tough to get free traffic unless u have the time and discipline. however, if u are prudent and do your own due dilliegent, U can set aside an advertising budget and scar from there.

If you know what you are doing, you can recoup your investment within weeks, not months.

Get the money u need.csell your stuff, work 2, 3 jobs, do whatever it take to get your seed money. If u can't raise the funds, then i doubt u can last even with free traffic.

You're just going to have to roll up your sleeves. Find and pick a handful of methods that are low-cost or free and invest a period of time in each one per day. Say you pick 2 or 3 methods, spend 40 minutes a day on each one, and use different URL's and tracking codes for each one, and do that for weeks until and look at your results.

    It's really the only way.

Whatever market you're in, there's competitors who have lists of buyers. So try to get in front of buyers.

You could build a site that sells affiliate products via email and put THEIR hoplink in the emails to wet them to this idea. Typical affiliate marketing ids. You won't make immediate sales, but you'll build a list if people who buy stuff.

Of course, it's helpful to have 1) something good to give away for free, 2) someone you can give your own commissions away on, and 3) a proven sales funnel that convert. But we all start omewhere.
