For what purpose?

It's not real smart to fill your platform with plugins that people recommend but they have no benefit for you.

I say the fewer you use judiciously, the better.

I agree. We tend to think that more plugins are good but it can somehow take its toll on the system and can sometimes make your site slower. I just choose the essential ones and even rethink if I need certain plugins before I install them.

Akismet saves me hours over the course of weeks

#1 in my blog. I don't use many plug ins though. I prefer speed, a simple platform and although functionality rocks no blogger needs more than a handful of plug ins to succeed with blogging.

The First two plugins I install on any blog I create are TinyMCE Advanced and ITheme Security Pro.

TinyMCE Helps me the format Content on Pages Easily and ITheme Security Pro is a must have for any Wordpress Blog as security always comes first.

I get a lot of mileage out of Wordpress and I'm a big fan of plugins like Yoast, Simple Share Buttons Adder and WP Super Cache.

But, if truth be told, I'd have to say that my favorite of all time is Simple Google News. Their heading reads 'Easily add Google News search results to posts, pages, or sidebars on your WordPress site."

'Easily' is the key word here and the plugin is a snap to setup. Just install the plugin and enter a simple line of short code to your 'News' page or whatever you choose to call it.
Wordpress Plugin

Say you want some news on 'Social Media' for your visitors.

Add this line:

[google_news query="Social Media" limit="15"]

And you have the latest headlines from Google (with images) for your blog readers.

Just an extra added section for you blog that will be of interest to some readers and occasionally the news item link from your site will show up on the top of the search engines.

I used Pretty Link very often to create my affiliate links. I agree with the Steve B above, only use what you need to use and make sure you keep them updated to help with security.

I use as few plugins as possible, preferring to do as much with code as possible. That said, there are a handful of plugins that go on every install:

> Bad Behaviour
> Yoast SEO

Once the site warrants it, I'll add a caching plugin to keep load times faster.

I've used WP Super Cache. It works by creating and serving static html files rather than dynamic files. It's really only useful if you get spikes of heavy traffic (like a front page digg or something) or your server is severely underpowered.

I'm not using it at the moment because WP hasn't verified that it works with the current update as I'm posting this. I expect it will be, though.

I don't have a hard and fast rule. I activate it as soon as I notice load times creeping up or if the spike hits.

SumoMeBar (not a Wordpress plugin per se, bit of coding you add to the HTML) is my favourite. It's got call to action bar, analytics, heat maps, share bar, and few others.

Other than that I've had fun with SEOPressor, but I have to disable it when I'm done as the loading time for a text based page can take up to 19s to load.

custom plugins...

The plugins I like the most are usually the ones that are used the least, also they do not interfere with the day to day operation of the website.

That is the real test of a good plugin, If it works and does not create an undue burden on the performance of the website, then its a good thing. A good plugin should save you time and money if possible.

I know some people believe (wrongly) that you should have almost no plugins, but that is not a good modus operandi, If you look at plugins as tools that can be used to help you succeed at what you want to accomplish then you can gain an understanding into how to best utilize a plugin to help you succeed.

#1 plugin depends on what use the plugin has:

Stopping Spam - NospamNX - works great and has an option to use an external file to list IPs to block. With the external file all of your sites can refer to it. A single update to the file updates all of your sites IP blocks.

Making Money - Elf Links - Far and away the single most profitable technique I use. Someone earlier mentioned Pretty Links but PL just makes your links "pretty" for visitors and has zero SEO impact. You need to remove affiliate links for SEO.

PHP Scripts - PHP Code - I'm still looking for the perfect plugin to run php code within posts, but PHP Code is good. When you learn some programming on your own, instead of relying on someone else's plugins, you can start doing amazing things with your websites.

I firmly believe that if you can add a snippet of code to a template, or copy/paste a function into that file, rather than add a plugin, it's better to do so.

If the plugin truly helps you succeed without doing harm in the process, fine.

The problem is that too many people install random plugins because they are cool, or Guru X recommends/promotes them. They end up with a long list of plugins that do very little for them.

Disqus - for my blog post comments
EWWW Image Optimizer - to (drastically) reduce the file size of my images without impacting the quality
Hybrid Connect - for my sidebar/post footer opt-in forms
Login Lockdown - added security
Monarch - social sharing buttons (they look very nice)
Simple 301 Redirects - creating 301s for my affiliate links
W3 Total Cache - for caching
Yoast SEO - for SEO

I recently put the finishing touches to a membership site.

Before I started building it, I made a vow to myself that I would only add new plugins as a clear need for them arose. I was going to discipline myself and keep myself to the minimum required.

I still ended up with 20! All I consider essential to achieving the look and function of my site, but yeah, I reckon it's pretty tough to get by on just a few if going for an enterprise solution.

Anyway, a few favourites:

Beaver Builder plugin. Fantastic for designing on the front end. Makes it super quick to develop a custom design, and easy to create/replicate particular elements you've seen elsewhere. Very little coding needed.

Erident Custom Login and Dashboard. Simple way to add some customised pizzazz to the standard WP login page. Add logos, choose background and box colours, fonts, sizes, etc.

WP Courseware. Hands down the best WP plugin for running courses. Three tiers (courses/modules/units), quizzes, certificates, and drag and drop functionality. Also integrates with a bunch of membership plugins.

Nav Menu Roles. A really nifty little plugin that allows you to display different menus to users depending on their status (logged in, logged out, everybody). For example: for non logged-in users, you can have a menu displaying links to pricing, login, FAQ, etc. For logged-in users, that can be replaced with a menu with logout, support, etc.

Limit Login Attempts. Super-easy security plugin.

Yoast, of course!

But I think my favourite now has to be 'Backup Creator' after a little misshap with my main site...

This plugin creates a full backup of your site which you can reinstall if everything goes wrong. Do it at least once a week now because I was that close to losing a whole years worth of work.

I love Pretty Links for affy links

Wordfence for security

Yoast SEO for what it does

Akismet for spam blocking

Have been meaning to try Profit Builder as another page building option

In truth, there are so many plugins available, it's always wise to not get too crazy with too many active plugins at any one given time

The first plugin that i must install is Akismet. Fortunaly that is already installed with vanilla Wordpress install. However, i must have a backup plugin and for that i use My WP Backup Pro for ensuring that i have backups in case a disaster strikes.

I use a few, but without repeating other posts, my favourite is SumoMe, as it shows me all the analytics, can add call to action bar (which is linked to my mailing lists) and popups, social media bar, heat maps.

I'm not scared of using lots of plugins, if need be. If they are written CORRECTLY, the drag should be minimal. I've had as many as 40 active plugins on one site for testing purposes, and only lost about 1 second on load time.

The P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler) plugin will help you determine which plugins may be causing you trouble.

Like @JohnMcCabe, though, I prefer to do as much as possible in the code before looking for a plugin.

No matter which one you install, stay away from those that replace the TinyMCE editor with other editors (i've seen many users doing this).

If you replace it, you won't be able to use the buttons that tons of plugins develop for TinyMCE.

Broken Link Checker - checks to see if any of your links are leading to websites or web pages that don't exist anymore
