Request for some help and info from a new warrior

Hi everyone

I'm new here and to the world of IM.

I think that I have found a niche market, and it is one that I have a keen interest in so it will at least keep me amused and busy.

I know it won't make me a millionaire overnight and that it will take a lot of hard work and effort, but I have a few questions which I hope you could help me with.

1. I am going to publish information rather than sell a specific product, so I think that e-Books are the way forward. Would you agree?

2. I have converted the e-Books completed so far into .exe files, which require a licence number to open, and have set this up with an auto-responder in order to confirm that they did request the information and once they confirm it automatically sends the licence number. Is this the right way to go or is there another way?

3. I hope that at some point it will all take off and that I can charge for the information being downloaded, but the $60 million question is what would be a reasonable price to charge for an e-book?

Grateful for any advice or tips.

Dawn

    1. Do both. It's easier to sell your product once you've given something of value. It's a part of pre-selling.

    2. IMO that's alright as long as you're getting the sign-ups. But the usual process is for people to sign-up and then download the ebook in a PDF format.

    3. I'm not yet a "master" on pricing techniques but I find that it's as much effort to sell $7 and $27 products. In fact based on my stats I've sold a bit more of the products higher than $7.

It does thanks. I will now go and have a look at different ways of the downloading issue and to work out a price for the products...

      Thanks very much.

From a psychological point of view things appear to sell better with a seven in the number, but you can split test that. I would suggest that you try your ebook at a price day $17.00 then see what happens. If it sells put the price up and see whrere the resistance to a sale begins. If it is initially priced too high and their are no sales, or few (but you have traffic) then run a limited time special offer and bring the price down to the point where you are happy. Best of luck with your sales

I can't even begin to understand the seven issue.

I will try the $17.00 starting price. I'm currently researching for 3 books at the moment and two of those should be suitable for that.

Is there page limits for setting prices, I don't want to feel that I'm robbing people for something that I am enjoying doing.

You could always try setting up a members area where they can access your downloads but they need to sign up as a member first.

    Just a thought

There is some simple software out there that can run it for you. Cant think of the name off hand, but if you sign up to one of the JV Give-aways that are always being run you should be able to find it for free. It sounds as if your needs would be simple so the free stuff should be ok.

Got to love that word Free

    Welcome, Dawn!

Seems like you have a good plan there. I would go ahead with it. You will never know for sure unless you do some testing. You could do some split-testing both for website, pricing and pricing options as well as with and without license keys (does the refund rate go up with license key f.ex).

I assume that since you wanted to do .exe versions you already have a way of doing this. You could try submitting a trial/free version of your book to software directories like download.com with embedded information in the .exe about where they can opt-in to get their license key. A great tip for viral traffic.

    Hi Dawn,

If you've already got a lot of good, valuable info or a comprehensive ebook - a good way to get targeted subscribers is to offer a 'taster' version of your ebook (say 10-15 pages max).

Set up an autoresponder campaign for your list, obviously offering the full product. If the taster was percieved as really good quality and got them salivating for more - you should get a high conversion, because they're already interested - as they opted into your 'taster' freebie.

Hope this makes sense and good luck,
    Andrew.

Apologies for not replying sooner. I've been driving home.

Thank you all for your suggestions, and yes, they all make sense.

I quite like the idea of a member's area, as I could keep the items in a PDF format for download, as that would save me having to borrow a windows PC to convert them as I can't run the software on a Mac.

Thinking a bit more about this, I could use the smaller books as a free give away, maybe as a taster of the work I'm doing and get them to sign up.

I am finding though, that the nature of what I'm researching and writing about, some books will never be more than 10 pages and others appear to becoming endless

I just hope that there is someone out there who has the same interest as me!!!

In between work, I'll look at setting up a members area, and I can put some more files in there, and then update my blog etc.

Thanks very much once again everyone, and when i hit a brick wall, I'm bound to be back with more questions

Absolutely not! Don't get into the mindset that length = value in your ebooks. Some of the best you'll ever read are very short.

Some of the biggest piles of drivel you'll ever read are massive tomes full of gobbledy gook.

Set the price where you feel comfortable and treat your first run as a test project. If it sells like hot cakes and you start getting feedback like this: "Wow! I would have paid twice what you asked for this marvelous information!" - you'll know you charged too little. And vice versa, of course.

    Hi Dawn

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on what you've done so far.

    Regarding your market..

It's great that you have an interest in this market, but have you researched how popular it is? The strength of competition? Whether it's a buying market?

Assuming it's a viable niche, your knowledge of it should enable you to come up with some juicy keywords with low competition. That would certainly help you to market your products.

    1. I am going to publish information rather than sell a specific product, so I think that e-Books are the way forward. Would you agree?
An ebook is a specific product - ask any information publisher

    2. I have converted the e-Books completed so far into .exe files, which require a licence number to open, and have set this up with an auto-responder in order to confirm that they did request the information and once they confirm it automatically sends the licence number. Is this the right way to go or is there another way?
Most people are more comfortable with downloading pdf files, but there are fans of .exe files who'll be quick to point out the security advantages. Personally, I'd always go for a pdf, especially for a free download.

Just be sure to get them to opt-in with their email address to access the product.

    3. I hope that at some point it will all take off and that I can charge for the information being downloaded, but the $60 million question is what would be a reasonable price to charge for an e-book?
Don't be too rigid about calling it an ebook and the world could be your lobster. There are successful marketers selling 15-20 page reports for anything up to $50. Others are doing very well with 60+ page manuals or systems selling for up to $100.

Add a video or audio element and you've suddenly got a course which could sell for hundreds or be split into 6, 10 or 12 monthly installments.

It all depends on the quality of the information, the needs and desires of the market and your ability to reach enough of these buyers with a suitably compelling offer.

Good luck and keep us informed.
