What do you think of these new domain extensions?

Dear fellow warriors,

Been a long time since I've shown my face here, I'm interested in getting back into business and I have a question.

What do you warriors think of new extensions like .fans and .amsterdam etc.

It's not an SEO question per se, or just a growth hacking question. But it can mean a lot for those areas of internet marketing.

What do you think, shall I use this or do we have to stay the hell away from these new extensions?

Looking forward to your awesome replies!

Kind regards,
Steve

It may take awhile for the new domain extensions to catch on. I think something like a .com still conveys a bit more sense of legitimacy just because people are used to them.

Thanks! It was something I was already thinking. However, it may be a great way to set the tone with community building..

I would always use a .com extension whenever possible, it looks more professional and the bulk of the largest and most trusted sites online use the extension.

Secondly .com is generally considered the default domain extension and people generally feel more comfortable typing it into their browser and are also more likely to remember your web address when it ends in a .com.

At the end of the day .com is the most universal domain extension and can be used for any online business, in addition Google gives preference to .com domain names over others with improved ranking. So stick with a .com extension whenever possible.

The exception to using a .com might be if you were targeting a specific non-US country for example .co.uk or using .org if targeting a non-profit organization.

If you are just looking to build an online business, there is nothing wrong with the new extensions, though many have really hefty renewal fees. If you are looking to sell the domain name in the short term - in a year or 2 - I'd definitely go with the .com.

If you are convinced that descriptive one or 2 keywords are essential to your business, you will find that most of very good .com ones are already registered. And unless you can afford to buy one from a reseller, you might want to look over what is available in the new extensions.

Extension like .web or .online or .club have a lot of fans. But just like with the .com, you should try to find names that are short, easy to spell and pronounce.

This is a round-about way of saying that, while the .com extension is king of the hill right now, there is no guarantee this will be so in 4 or 5 years. New folks are coming online everyday and, if your site provides products and/or services surfers are looking for, than the extension could very well be irrelevant

Just my 2 cents on this.

Here's my view on these extensions - .fan shows like a fan dedicated website domain. So, if you follow a particular celebrity, than this extension could be a good fit. And as of .amsterdam, I've never heard of that extension. Maybe some people have on here! Don't know about how well you will rank in the serps. I always use .com followed by .net and lastly .org.

Unless there becomes a sudden, tremendous interest in those domain extensions, stick with .,com first and then .net next.
