Query about re-building a niche site from scratch

Hello Warriors,

Greetings for the day!

I have a query about re-building (or re-starting) a niche site from scratch. I'd appreciate any response and advice you might have for me.

I have a year old niche site that I have ignored for the most part, and so it has no search engine love (expect its pages being indexed). I want to re-build it from scratch. So, it'll go in "Under Construction" mode for 3-4 days. Should I leave it as 'Under Construction' or is there a way to have it de-indexed from Google so that when it comes up again, it'll be fresh & new?

P.S.: I know Google tracks everything, still wondering if there's any sense in my thought about this one. Thanks in advance for helping out.

    Google wants you to improve your website.

    As far as I know, there is no evidence to suggest that a coming soon page will impair SE ranking, providing you follow current on-site SEO conventions on that page. There is an option in WP, for instance, to discourage indexing, but there's no need to consider it. Plop up a coming soon page, use Wordpress SEO by Yoast to help you optimize, assuming you're new to SEO, and then just redesign in the background.

      Why bother with a 'coming soon' page?

      Unless you can do something useful with it, like adding a list of coming content and a subscription form for notifications of when new content is available.

      Don't waste time on it for Google's sake. Just put your blog in maintenance mode and relaunch when you are ready.

        3-4 days is nothing. I wouldn't worry about putting up a notice that the site is "under construction." Since your site is stale, Google probably won't be stopping by soon anyway.

        Just make the new site as you want. Include a site map according to Google instructions at their webmaster tools section. Then just let the big G find you again. A good way to do that is to set up Google alerts for your main key words.

    If I were you, I'd just start a brand new site, but make sure to keep up with it this time. Going into a niche market that you actually like will help you to stay motivated.

      Hey Joey,

      I would have done that too if the existing domain name wasn't brandable enough. It's a spin-off sort of a name of a site (in the same niche) that got sold for over $3Mn last year. So, it's a catchy and a brandable name. I just need to get the content part done.
