Stuck in the IM Niche

I want to expand my business and start creating products in other niches...but how do I do this? I feel like as if i'm stuck in the IM niche, and there's nothing wrong with that except I don't want to be bound to this niche forever. At the same time however, it's incredibly difficult to create and launch products in other niches, which makes the IM niche sort of my only option...So how do I go about this?

Is there a subject that you like? Sports, fitness, fishing? If you have an interest for something, is easier to talk about and to develop a product or an idea.

If you find a topic that you are an expert (maybe a little) you'll find easier to write, to search and to have a product.

If you want a source of inspiration, go to amazon and search for a bestseller book with a subject that is relevant or interesting to you.

      This!

Also is there anything you want to learn more about? I learnt a lot about Alternative healing, meditation, buddhism when I started a blog about it. The more I learnt the more I shared.

So yeah use this as an opportunity to discover new things for you as well, if there's personal drive in it it you'll lose the mundanity of work feeling for it.

If you have knowledge in other niches you can certainly make this transition easy. And if you don't have the knowledge you could spend some time purchasing products, going through them, making notes, until you have the required knowledge to create your own products.

Also, while it may seem the IM niche is the only place big launches happen that certainly isn't the case. Its easy to think that when your in the IM niche because you start to close out whats going on outside of the niche. But the truth is, there are affiliates out there in all sorts of niches constantly looking for good products to promote.

Reverse engineer a successful product in the niche you want to enter. Google search it to find what blogs promote it. Who promoted it on YouTube. See if they have any affiliate info and JV tools. Start making a list of all the blogs you find. Make a list of all the YouTube videos you find promoting that product. Take down the contact info of each.

Now you have information for potential affiliates you can target once you have your product and funnel ready to go. And then you take things from there. It will get easier as you go and the more of a name you build for yourself in that niche.

You're not as stuck as you might think. I mean, don't you have a hobby that you enjoy that's in a profitable niche? If you can't think of a profitable niche in which you won't actually have to physically manufacturer something, just go into a profitable niche, where you can learn about it and write about it -- using your own person experiences to make it different. It's going to take some time, though.

Go to Google Keyword planner and do some categorical searches and look for stuff you can be passionate about.

Next, filter the result based on search volume and CPC value.

After that, look for places on the Net where people interested in these topics hang out.

Get a feel for the demand and build your site around the traffic.

Once you get really good at promoting 1 niche, you will meet a lot of people in other ones who need help promoting. See if they want to JV. And slowly you can build your partnerships.

Do a search and look for some large popular forums in the niche you are interested in.

Take a look and see the questions people are asking, if you notice a pattern such as similar type questions - it will be obvious that people want to know more.

You could create a product that answers the questions people are asking on the forums in your niche.

Stop thinking and just do it, the same way as you did it in the IM Niche.

And when you have a problem, worry about it then.

I know hindsight is 20/20 but why in the World did you get in MMO Niche without first getting 'real time' experience cutting your teeth in a non IM niche ??

I have noticed this has been a consistent theme the last few years. Newbs rushing in and 'Teaching Theory' about IM and NOT 'Teaching from real Experience' in doing Online Marketing.

Sounds like some of these people ought to be college professors lol

It is called affiliate marketing, there is no need to "create" products, just promote them. You can use the techniques you teach to get the traffic to the niche sites

Doesn't make sense. Everything you've learned about internet marketing can be applied to virtually any potentially profitable niche.

      .
      Yes, this is true.

There is absolutely no reason why you cannot branch out from MMO Niche. As I said earlier most of us did the opposite. And has worked fine.

But the basic 'foundational' ingredients in building an online business is the same for the MMO Niche as it is for Acne Niche to the Electronics Niche etc..

Making money online is all about matching up an offer with a traffic source. The reason why it's so difficult for you to leave your niche is because most other niches are too narrow or saturated which makes it very difficult to rank highly in the search engines. Paying for traffic can be very expensive. You can't spend more than what you're putting in if you want to make a profit. Unless, of course, you have a way to make up for your front-end losses on the back-end.

My short answer: If you're selling products you've created on how to do internet marketing, should you know how to... do internet marketing? I mean, your question isn't that far removed from a question that any newbie posts about "How do I pick a niche?" or "How do I get started?" The same things that work for that newbie will work for you here -- the same things, incidentally, that I assume you are selling.

But in the interest of being more helpful than snarky, I'll give you a longer, more complete response.

The long answer: First, IM is not a niche. It's a business activity, one that any business worth its salt engages in, from Amazon.com to Coca-Cola to the guy who installed hardwood floors in my house.

What I think you're talking about is Making Money Online (MMO), but even that's not a niche. That's a topic area -- and a huge topic area at that. But a niche is more than a topic area, more than an industry. It's what you do within that topic or industry.

For instance in the 1980's both IBM and Microsoft were key players in the PC industry. But they occupied very different niches. IBM designed and built computers. Microsoft created the operating systems that made them work. A good way to know whether two businesses occupy the same niche is to think about whether they're competitors. In the above example, it's clear that not only were Microsoft and IBM not competing businesses, they were complementary businesses. They relied on each other.

In a way, the above a very similar to the relationship the Warrior Forum has to so many of the marketers who use it. The WF relies on these marketers to buy ads, to serve as customers for its WSO marketplace, and to provide free advice to make the forums useful. These marketers rely on the WF as a way to find new customers and to promote themselves. Thus while both the WF and these marketers operate in the larger MMO industry, they occupy very different niches. Again, they are complementary not competitors. (Of course, not everyone on the WF is in an MMO niche -- including me -- but that's another story!)

The reason I bring this all up is because when you're thinking about how to expand out of your current niche (whatever that niche might be), it's helpful to know what your current niche actually is. What exactly do you do? How do you bring value to your customers? And is what you do in your current niche transferable to other niches as well? Once you know that -- in other words, once you can articulate your value proposition -- then you can think about how to extend that value proposition into other niches, to other customers.

For instance, when IBM expanded, one of the things they did was focusing on building servers and other high performance machines. In other words, they used their competence in the personal computer hardware niche to expand into building other sorts of hardware. Microsoft, on the other hand, expanded into all sorts of software beyond just operating systems, whether word processing, spreadsheets or games. (I should note that this history I'm presenting is very simplified and not necessarily 100% accurate chronologically -- but the idea is certainly true!)

You can do the same. Think about your own business model. What is it that you do better than your competition? Why are you successful? Then think about other niches that may benefit from your skills and expertise. If your focus is product creation (as it seems to be), what kind of products could you create that other people outside of MMO-niches need? Are your products videos? Maybe there are other types of videos you could create? Are your products well-written, well-researched guides? Maybe you could create other well-written, well-researched guides in other areas. Play to your strengths.

On the other hand, maybe you're just one of those fake it till you make it wannabe IM "experts" who sells shoddy products to unsuspecting newbies. If this is the case, my guess is there's probably not much you could do outside of MMO -- then again, if that's the case you're probably not doing so well in MMO either (which might explain the question!

Your interest is money. Not the IM niche. You have been in this niche for quite a while, taking action, getting results, etc. until you feel confidence in it. It has now become your comfort zone.

So how do you get out of your comfort zone?

Recall the time when you jump into the IM niche at the very beginning. I doubt that you are comfortable with it like you are now. You surely felt nervous, anxious, irritating, and maybe a few more negative feelings. But you've overcome all these until you become confident taking any action within this niche.

Now, draw the same strength you have back then, to move to a new thing right now. It will be much easier this time, since you already have the experience.

Start small at first. Maybe repurpose and rebrand a PLR and sell it, or something like that.

Oh, one more thing, don't look for where your passion is, in deciding what niche to go in. You will keep postponing taking any action if you do this.

Instead, look for 'What is selling right now'. Your passion is 'Money'. Think of how much money you want, what will you do with it, how your life will improve. Then look for the money trend, where it is flowing to and take action.

All the best and take care.

It's important to know what type of business you're thinking about. So when you figure that out, you can start planning other fields. But don't forget that IM is one of the most upcoming ways of marketing. Being experienced in that area gives you an advantage.
