How do you earn revenue on a health site outside Adsense?

If you have a site providing impartial content. There are loads of affiliate products catering to the health segment but from my extensive research most tend to be products that are natural or alternative health related products, which either do not have backing from independent health bodies (such as the FDA, for example) or have a lack independent studies about their efficacy.

Me and a friend have a site which provides impartial health content and we make decent amount from Adsense, however, we haven't been able to take revenues to the next level because we find affiliate products would compromise the impartial nature of our site since those products are not mainstream (for example, a public sector doctor wouldn't be allowed to recommend these products to their patients). Although many of these products offer good commissions, ranging from 10% to 50%, they are not traditional medicine.

    Hey Anton,

Since you already have an established site one brilliant thing you could do is search on social media for ''traditional'' health experts (since you say that you don't want to get involved with alternative medicine) who have a large following and ask them for an interview that you will publish on your site.

If done right this technique will not only give authority to your site but it will also potentially skyrocket your adsense earnings since you 'll be receiving FREE targeted traffic from the posts on social media that those experts will publish when the interview is done (to promote themselves of course but at the same time they 'll be promoting your site. It's a win-win situation)

Btw this technique that I just briefly layed out to you is being teached in courses that range between $297-$997.

So, I hope that helps ;-)

I meant conventional health/medicine. Anyway, I have thus far neglected social traffic (other than having share buttons on the site) as I wanted to focus on content and ranking well on search engines. On some of the popular articles, I have as many as several hundred to a several thousand FB shares (and some from Twitter as well). Is it possible to get signficant daily social traffic if the site is promoted heavily? I have always regarded social sites like FB and others as rather spammy, perhaps remembering back to my experiences with MySpace. Should I hire someone to work on promoting the sites with social networks?

Does social traffic convert with adsense? Studying the analytics with regards to my site, almost 100% of the people who click on ads tend to come from the search engines, very few returning users do so.

A large number of affiliate marketers in the health niche are promoting products they dont actually believe in themsleves. So promoting thse type of products, even if they happen to be genuinely good, could potentially do more harm than good for the reputation of a site that relies on integrity.

In saying that I have come across reports which suggest the really big sites in the health niche are not always as as impartial as they make themselves to be. In some cases, they've taken payments to write positively about certain drugs that did not have overwhlming approval.

Have you looked at the adsense ads that show up on your site. I would imagine that some of the products you do not want to promote are showing on your site once and a while. And as for main stream doctors not recommending such products is a bunch of bull. Many doctors recommend fish oil, so why not promote a good brand of that. They will also recommend glucosamine,

As well there are plenty of exercise video's and programs such as P90X. You can join weight watchers affiliate program at commission junction. Not to mention Amazon with exercise equipment, video's, health monitors. you name it. The potential products are endless. Just look for them

There are endless "active lifestyle" products that could be promoted to those who come to your site.

I think you're getting hung up on the fact that you think "affiliate products would compromise the impartial nature of our site." So find affiliate products that have no crusade, no mission to convert to a specific health opinion.

You are handicapping your own earning potential with the false assumption that it's best to remain neutral or impartial.

You might want to do a survey of your readers and get an understanding of what needs they have

Create a series of books that focus on those needs

You can make more money this way.

Kill the adsense ads and focus on monetizing your audience

Our site covers multiple conditions, so the scope for adding products is enormous. But like I say, most health products available online tend to be ones that are not produced by conventional drug companies, you know, conventional pharma, that have valid government licenses. I am not one to readily dismiss all products offered by alternative health companies. I am sure there are some that do a good job at providing solutions conventional medicine isn't able to, or offer a solution to people who like the fact that these products very often carry minimal or no side effects. But there is huge stigma associated with alternative medication often considered "snake oil". There are some good products getting hidden from view by tons of garbage out there. Nonetheless, its a big industry that is being exploited by dodgy entrepreneurs pumping out products that do absolutely nothing other than burn a hole in people's wallets, which damages the repuattion of the more genuine products out there. So you really have to mine out the few good from the vast number of bad.

That said I am thinking about creating a store within my site using the Woocommerce plugin, to feature few selected products from alternative health industry and also a few ebooks from Clickbank. I will of course carefully vet these products so they are as helpful as possible. But my worry remains impartiality. Perhaps I can warn people that I am trying to offer an alternative solution if they've exausted traditional means.

Away from alternative health, do any of you have any ideas how I can monetise the traffic with products that have some sort of association with the conventional health industry? Please bear in mind around 85% of our traffic comes from the US. Its okay for the massive health sites out there because they have connections with pharamaceutical companies (in the form of partnerships, even if they claim they don't) and big name doctors to tailor products and solutions for their readers, but what do us regular guys do?
